GREAT machine, very good price/value. Take your time assembling & pick up these extras when you purchase.
5 Stars
GREAT machine, very good price/value. Take your time assembling & pick up these extras when you purchase.
Firstly, we are big treadmill people. We live on the second floor in our apartment complex, and after years of slopping around we knew we had to start investing in our health again and a treadmill wasn't an option. An Elliptical was the logical option. We read the reviews and this machine seemed to bring value and quality together. After a few days of using the A40, I'm very pleased and can recommend it to others in the same situation.ASSEMBLYThe box it arrived in is very tightly packed and quite heavy. During the unpack is when I first realized this $400 machine was higher quality than I anticipated as the parts are pretty heavy duty. It took a few hours to put together although we did not rush and took our time. It's super important when assembling the machine to follow the instructions and not fully tighten the bolts until everything is in place or it will cause misalignment of holes and bolts which then can lead to stripping threads - just take your time and do it right.NOISEAs far as the workout goes, I'm a bit in shock of how effective it is. It is VERY silent on carpet and a sturdy machine.STRIDEI'm 5'8" and I've heard others mention the stride length. For me, it seems just about right. I suppose if you are over 5'10" it would start to be uncomfortable.ADDITIONAL PARTS1. The computer is battery powered with an ac adapter option. If you want to run off of ac, take the time to purchase the ac adapter as it is not included. Given the price/quality of this machine, no big deal if you know up front:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007JZ4XTS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005VG35Z0/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=12. The computer is not, at all, backlit. That means if you are using it in the morning in a dark setting, you can't see the screen - at all. Purchase a clip-on book light too. There is a shelf on the computer that works fine for it. Again, given price/quality, not a big deal:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000ITGQXS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1OVERALLOverall, we are VERY happy with this machine and again, I can recommend it by taking the time to write this and encourage others to make the plunge.

Just completed assembling this yesterday. Took about 2 1/2 hours. Had some difficulty finding threads for the bolts, otherwise it would have taken no more than 1 1/2 hours. All of the parts were included, and the bolts, washers, etc. were in logically laid out shrink wrap. Instructions were well written.
I am very impressed with how sturdy this machine is. In the box it weighs about a hundred pounds, so needed help getting it into the house. The weight of the machine, however, helps to keep it steady for my use at 170 pounds. I'm 6 foot tall and find that the stride is long enough and the handles tall enough so that I don't have to lean over. I'm 65 and have had a partial knee replacement, so needed a machine with no impact. An elliptical is my choice as it will definitely help strengthen my ability to be on my feet for long periods of time and walk long distances. My use will be more cautious and limited than a younger person, especially at first, due to my age.
A few reviewers say that the Schwinn is noisy and not smooth. I suppose next to an elliptical in a gym that costs thousands of dollars it might not be as quiet or smooth. However, I find the A40 to be very quiet and smooth.
The console works very well, and has plenty of information for my workout. i may never use the speakers to play music, but the machine is quiet enough that it would not interfere at all with music being played through the speakers. I think the heart rate monitor is slow to come up to the actual heart rate (perhaps a minute of contact with the static handlebar).
Overall, for the price, this is an excellent buy. I look forward to improving my physical conditioning with it.

I've had this for about a month now and for the most part I'm pretty happy with it, considering it was purchased for 400. It's a budget, compact option so don't expect a flagship design or features.

Pros:
It's quiet enough to use in an apartment (with a caveat, see below) and seems well made. It's heavy but one person can still move it around without too much difficulty. The stride length is workable for tall people like myself though maybe not ideal (but I knew that going in and bought this because it was compact). Assembly was somewhat time consuming but also relatively straightforward, with easy to follow instructions.

Cons:
It's quiet once it gets going and the joints warm up, but for the first few minutes it does squeak some. It's never enough to be annoying to me when I'm wearing headphones, but others nearby will be able to hear it. I greased the various pins and bearings when I assembled it but that didn't seem to make a difference. Still, it does go away after a few minutes. The small number of programs isn't a killer but there are a couple specific ones it's missing that I wish it had, particularly a Hi-Lo interval program. You could just adjust it back and forth manually but that's a pain in the rear to do for any length of time. The last minor issue I found was that the plastic water bottle holder is trash; a full Gatorade squeeze bottle has a tendency to pop out the front because the holder is too flimsy to secure the weight. Fortunately, any standard bicycle water bottle holder will fit on the mounting holes, so I bought a steel one from Amazon and now have no issues.

A final word on the power cord; it's not necessary but D cell batteries are expensive enough that I think it's worth buying the cord if you are a high volume user. I found that rechargeables Eneloops in D cell adapters do work, but I found it easier to just plug the thing in.

I bought Schwinn A40 Elliptical during Christmas 2014 when Amazon had this for a great deal at $364.

SHIPMENT: The item was shipped promptly and arrived in 3 days although I was expecting in 7 days with free shipping. Thanks a lot Amazon!!! The box was heavy and I used Magnacart to move it around. Out of the box, this item was packed very tight in the box and all the pieces were labeled clearly for easy assembly. It took me close to 2 hours working slowly and carefully because I didn't want to rush and miss any steps.

QUALITY: This is a high quality machine for the price and its light weight makes it a breeze to move around the house unlike some other brand Ellipticals. I have a high regard for Schwinn products as I also have a Schwinn Mountain Bike that I am very happy with the build quality.

STRIDE: I am only 5'7" so I don't have any complaints about the stride and I feel it is just right for my height but taller people may find the stride a bit smaller and inconvenient as seen with some reviewers.

QUIET: This machine is very quiet when operating. Although I hear a cling noise now and then from the flywheel area, I am going to give this some time before I place a warranty service call if the noise gets worse. Over all it is quiet and yet sturdy. Just like any other equipment that has moving parts, for this machine, we need to keep the supplied allen wrench handy and keep tightening the nuts and bolts as part of weekly maintenance.

CONSOLE: The computer console is not backlit but it is easy to read different settings. I am ok with the on-board MP3 speaker quality although they are not the best. However, I am not quite sure how accurate the heart beat, calorie count and distance readings are. I use the book holder to place my iPad on it and watch while I work out. I find the pre-set workout programs more than adequate for an average workout.

AC ADAPTER: The machine doesn't come with the AC adapter so please remember to buy the Pwr+ brand of AC adapter when you order this item. I didn't know this when I ordered. Given the price of the Elliptical, it is no big deal but you need to be aware of.

I use this for 3-4 days a week for a low impact, total body, cardio-vascular workout and this elliptical makes me sweat and gives me a great workout. I would recommend this to any one who wants a good quality Elliptical at an affordable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Purchase
Reviewed in Canada on October 22, 2021
I was uncomfortable returning to a gym setting with so much Covid still lingering and wanted a decent elliptical that I could set up at home but didn't want to spend a fortune. I read loads of product reviews and this seemed like a good option. This has been a great purchase, it was easy enough to assemble, I followed the instructions carefully and I didn't have a single piece or any hardware left over so I was quite pleased with myself. I've been using it pretty much daily for the last 6 months and have decided that a gym membership is no longer necessary, I love the convenience of a home gym and I will hop on it for 20 minutes when I can't find the time to do a full work out so overall a fantastic purchase.

También fue fácil de armar y trae las herramientas necesarias.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good basic machine
Reviewed in Canada on February 16, 2016
Was purchased at a great price and arrived as promised. I purchased it for its smaller size and basic features. The box was in poor shape but every thing inside was fine. It take a couple of hours to assemble but will documented. Solid construction. The magnetic drag didn't work so had a couple of calls to resolve. The service personnel were friendly and knowledgeable. As they didn't have service personnel in Canada, I had to repair it myself and had to purchase a crank puller to open up the machine to realign the control cables. The units works well but the display can be better contrast for viewing. Due to limited display size, it switches between different groups of measurements so it is difficult to track measurements. The heart rate monitor is slow so it takes a couple of minutes to get true reading. It doesn't work with my NiCd batteries and damaged them. Had to use LiOn and seems to last for several months.
