From the manufacturer

Phoenix LTX Tagger

The Phoenix LTX Tagger is a Nerf Lazer Tag laser tagger that was released in 2008. It requires six "AA" batteries to operate.

It is currently only availablle in a two-player set from Amazon.com.

Original Tiger Electronics packages came with a Shot Blast accessory, a removable green laser sight, and a special video game attachment for use with the "Solo" game mode, while later sets only included the tagger itself.

Details

The Phoenix LTX features a red receiver dome on top where tags are registered. This dome flashes red when it is tagged. Unlike previous taggers sold by Tiger Electronics, the Phoenix LTX does not have lock-on or detection indicators. This is due to the Phoenix LTX not having a receiving barrel. Players cannot tell a player's allegiance by simply pointing their tagger. Likewise, Tiger Electronics taggers cannot lock on or get information from the Phoenix LTX. Above the handle the tagger features a light and built-in rumble pack, it flashes and shakes when the tagger is fired or tagged.

Hosting matches

A vast difference between the Phoenix LTX and other Tiger Electronics taggers is that the Phoenix LTX does not have a menu screen. This means that this tagger cannot host complex matches. However, simple games can be played. The tagger can choose between "Solo", "Team 1" and "Team 2. A hidden "Team 3" is only selectable when the power switch is held carefully in place between the "Team 1" and "Team 2" positions.

"Solo" creates a quick "LTAG" free-for-all match. Choosing "Team 1", "Team 2", or "Team 3" joins a team-based game, where players are placed onto the respective team as indicated. Teams cannot be changed once the match begins.

Matches are started by pulling the trigger, which activates a ten second countdown before the game begins.

Joining matches

Though not explicitly stated, the Phoenix LTX is able to join custom matches hosted by a Tiger Electronics tagger through the hidden means.

Turning on a Phoenix LTX tagger activates a scan that searches for nearby Tiger Electronics tagger-hosted matches. If the trigger is pulled before the tagger can find a match, it will start a normal Phoenix LTX pick-up game. To join any match, the tagger must be aimed directly at the host's receiving dome.

Joining a match with no teams will have the Tiger Electronics tagger assign the Phoenix LTX tagger to a "LTAG" free-for-all match. The ammo indicator on the Phoenix LTX will indicate which player number it is assigned to.

Phoenix LTX accessories

The Shot Blast is a large attachment placed on the front of the Phoenix LTX that features two infrared emitters. It could only be purchased while Lazer Tag was still owned by Tiger Electronics.

The Phoenix LTX pinpoint sight could only be purchased while Lazer Tag was still owned by Tiger Electronics. It attaches on the top back rail of the tagger and emits a green laser sight. Unlike the Virtual Scope, the pinpoint sight runs off of the tagger's power and does not require its own batteries.

Better than Best Choice Products and Dynasty, but it has high defect rate

Better than Best Choice Products and Dynasty, but it has high defect rate
I did a lot of research and this is by far the most recommended laser tag guns. The gun is a lot of fun, my husband and I played with the kids every night since we got it. It is a great exercise. We had friends over and played adults vs kids. All my friends loved it and bought their own on Phoenix LTX the spot.So why the one star, the guns have super high defective rate. We bought two orders, 4 guns total and 3 out of 4 guns are defective. One gun does not work completely, it will turn on but it will pick the wrong team and restart itself before the count down finish. One gun's recoil doesn't work in the middle of the game and we have to restart the gun to reset the recoil. One of the ammo light in one of the gun doesn't light up.But since we still like the gun design so we asked for replacement instead of refund. So we got 4 new guns and one of the new guns doesn't work again. It will restart itself in the middle of the game.So out of the 8 guns we got so far, 4 guns are defective. This is really bad. I hope they have better quality control, otherwise I would highly recommended.=====================================================================================Updated 12/22/2017, changed one star to three stars because Phoenix LTX is far better compared to other laser tag guns.So I decided to try out other laser tag gun sets, specifically Best Choice Products and Dynasty. I didn't want to buy Laser X or Recoil because both sets required iPhone to play and my kids don't have iPhone. The long story short is Nerf Phoenix LTX is much better compared to Best Choice Products and Dynasty. Here is a comparison between these three laser gun sets.Best Choice (4 guns for $90) vs Dynasty (4 guns for $150) vs Nerf Lazer Phoenix LTX (2 guns for $64)I purchased both Best Choice Laser Tag Set and Dynasty Toys Laser Tag Set at the same time. Both sets come with 4 guns, but Dynasty is $60 more expensive.Besides the look and price, these two sets of guns are the same with one minor difference: Dynasty's sound is clearer/louder. Dynasty also comes with a very nice box which is great if you are giving it as a gift, but I won’t pay $60 for it.However, when comparing Best Choice/Dynasty with Nerf Lazer Phoenix LTX, Phoenix LTX is the clear winner.Nerf Lazer Phoenix's advantage over Best Choice/Dynasty1. Nerf has shield option which blocks bullets, Best Choice/Dynasty does not.2. Nerf has the option of 10 or 25 lives, Best Choice/Dynasty has only one option of 9 lives.3. Nerf's reload mechanism feels cooler with an actual ejection of the whereas Best Choice/Dynasty is just a push button.4. Every time Nerf is hit, the sensor on the gun will flash two times followed by an obvious rattle, versus Best Choice/Dynasty which only makes a small click sound that is barely audible during a battle.5. Nerf has a series of five bars that is labeled AMMO which shows how much bullets you have before reloading. In comparison, Best Choice/Dynasty has no bars indicating ammo.6. Each time you pull the trigger of Nerf, the gun recoils/rattles giving you the feel of a real gun. On the other hand, Best Choice/Dynasty doesn’t have any physical effects when you pull the trigger other than blast sounds.Best Choice/Dynasty’s advantages over Nerf Lazer Phoenix1. Best Choice/Dynasty is more accurate than Nerf.2. Best Choice/Dynasty has in all 4-gun modes (pistol, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher) whereas Nerf only has one.3. Best Choice/Dynasty is considerably lighter than Nerf.4. Best Choice/Dynasty only needs 4 AA batteries, but Nerf needs 6 AA batteries.5. Best Choice/Dynasty can have up to 4 different teams.Final VerdictWe all like Nerf Lazer Guns better so we will return both Best Choice and Dynasty, and cross our finger that our Nerf Lazer Guns will not die on us anytime soon. And I warned all my friends, checked and played with your Phoenix couple times to make sure there is no defect before the 30 days return period ends.Dynasty Toys Laser Tag Set and Carrying Case for Kids Multiplayer 4 PackBest Choice Products Kids Laser Tag Set Gun Toy Blasters W/ Multiplayer Mode, 4 Pack

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, best product of its kind on the market.
Reviewed in the United States on August 28, 2017
An excellent toy for kids and grown-ups. There are only a few similar products available and this boasts better range, usability, and convenience.

Easy to set up and play, intuitive controls, two-step reloading feature encourages tactics, programmable settings available through older LTTO taggers. The power switch lets you set "solo", "team 1", "team 2".

The "you're hit" light is visible outdoors; usually in full sunlight you can still see it. In the woods or shady areas, it's obvious. This is a great feature and we didn't fully appreciate it until we tried other taggers that don't have this feature. However, when an opponent gets you it's difficult to hide!

The grip angle and design is excellent for small or large hands because you can get a good high grip on the frame. The battery case allows for an alternative second hand grip if you hold it out in the air like where a rifle would sit.

The built-in "iron sights" are mostly accurate. For normal play, it's good enough. An infrared-capable camcorder can show you exactly where the "dot" is landing. Adding electronic sights can be done with the official toy product (available used).

The "recoil" and "you're hit" rumble makes it more fun to play with than non-rumbling taggers. When trying another tagger that didn't rumble, or when manually disabling the LTX's rumble feature (hold the back hammer when powering-on) it felt more "cheap" and "toyish".

When playing, often the "ammo" and "strength" LED displays are ignorable. But it's nice to have them, especially at the end of the game, or to show off when you make it to the safe zone with 1 Health left! A note, if you are playing with 25 Health, the display will only show you the last 10 points.

Older versions that are compatible with the LTX are the "Lazer Tag Team Ops" taggers (LTTO Deluxe, IRT-2X, Master Blaster Rifle). A newer version is the "LTAR" that was designed with a smartphone cradle. All of these are usable together and work on the same frequency. Also, hosted LTTO games can be joined by the Phoenix LTX. The LTX was also produced under the "Tiger" brand. Those older LTX taggers are fully compatible with the NERF version, but the old taggers may have a "team 3" setting, if the switch is placed between "1" and "2".

The LTX originally came with a "Shotblast" attachment that makes it function like a shotgun: adding a pump-style reloader and two different cone-style LEDs emit a pattern doing up to 3 damage per shot. It's still available on the used market. However, the result is too front-heavy unless you add a stock. Recommend using parts from other NERF toys.

In terms of aftermarket modifications, almost anything is possible. There is a lot of documentation available about the mechanical and electronic design of the product. However, make sure the result is still eye-safe! The best way to do this is to retain the original LED & lens arrangement. [See photo for an example.]
