Initially I was a little disappointed with the purchase. I like a nice loooooong fry that you can get a few bites out of and its a little tricky to achieve that with this cutter because the distance between the blade and the potato pusher plate is maybe 4.5 inches. Also potatoes can be quite irregular in size at times, and since the cutting area is only about 3.5 inches by 3.5 inches, you have to cut the potatoes down to size first then place them in the cutter. Also do not try to make sweet potato fries with this. Its not worth the effort and you may break it.
So after trying a few different cutting methods my disappointment turned into satisfaction and I got the nice long fry that I wanted. First, I cut the potato in half and i remove the potato pusher. Then I start pushing the potato through by hand, which is very easy to do at this point because it is halved. Once i get enough of the potato through the cutting blade to actually get it to fit into the cutter then I start to push the potato through with the handle. I push until it goes no further then I insert the potato pusher and give it one more push to finish it out. Its a bit much but it achieves the desired result and they come out great!
Overall its not perfect but its a great buy for the price.
My Culina French Fry Potato Cutter arrived last week, right on time! I eagerly unpacked it and washed all the parts, read the directions (short, sweet, & understandable), and set it on the countertop anticipating its first use. Well, tonight was the night ... it's finally the night that fries were worked into the menu. I peeled and washed my three sweet potatoes, cut them into usable pieces, and went to town!
I have tried numerous vegetable / fry cutters, and this one is by far the best. I'm a fan of sweet potato fries, and as you may know, those are some TOUGH potatoes! All of my previous purchases were returned due to the fact that they could barely hold up to onions and mushrooms, let alone the (never attempted) sweet potatoes. I was just about ready to break down and purchase a food processor with a fry blade. Now, there are numerous "professional" fry cutters, but I wasn't about to shell out $70+ JUST for french fries! On my last-ditch attempt to find what I needed, I came across this beauty. This guy looks alot like the "restaurant-quality" fry cutters, but at a fraction of the cost, which is what caught my attention.
Now for the details:
* There is lever on the side of the unit that allows you to suction the cutter to a flat surface so it doesn't move around on you (very important when dealing with sharp blades and hard vegetables). I was skeptical, but the cutter stayed put!
* There are two sizes of blades and they are very sturdy and stainless steel (no sharpening needed).
* The blades and pushers are extremely easy to change out.
* The bottom of the potato rest is curved, as is the bottom of the pusher, to ensure a good grip on the potato.
* There is enough lift on the unit to place a plate at the front to catch the cut potatoes.
* The lever is very easy to use.
* Clean up is a breeze! (Remove all parts, place is bowl of soapy water, remove, rinse, air dry. Rinse off main unit.) (Could also be placed in the dishwasher, but probably not necessary.) There are no small seams where food would get caught and require toothbrush cleaning.
Now, as I mentoned before, I enjoy sweet potato fries, the toughest potato I know of. I found that it was easier to push through the blades if quartered, but it did fine in half, also. The blades remained sturdy throughout (no bending or warping). I imagine this guy can be used for more than just potatoes, too. I'm going to be testing it out on onions and tomatoes, next. Could also be used for zucchini or yellow squash fries, cucumber sticks, cheese cubes ... the options are limitless.
The not so good - Real potatoes don't really fit inside. If the potato hangs up the process gets more difficult. The no slip base get slippery when wet. The cutter comes up short on leverage when cutting whole potatoes.
Overall - It gets the job done. The process goes easier if you cut the potatoes in half the long way. A better cutter would be allot bigger to store and cost 2x or 3x the cost of this one and it would not be used very often. All in, this works and is a good compromise between price, size, and how much of a potato cutter we need.

The parts themselves seem very nice quality for the price (on Amazon it's $10 cheaper than on Culina's store). Very easy to clean and my baked fries came out better than ever.
If anything changes, I will update my review.
I am so pleased, especially considering the price.
Two different fry sizes that are easy to change out, and the cutting process is quite smooth. The only issue I would say is that the current is only able to handle up to medium sized potatoes; if you cut them down a little beforehand it’s not really an issue.
Very very pleased :)
