While the printing speed on duplex is slower than I would like (single-sided printing is acceptably fast, but the duplexing takes a while --- the delay is not mechanical, but it sits there thinking for 10 seconds or so before proceeding with the second side), I love that I can fire off several tens of pages at once from the living room, and not have to worry about it. The duplex capability more than makes up for the lack of speed (no having to remember exactly which way to reinsert the paper after printing one side). I've had no duplexing paper jams (zero!).
The cartridges are simple to refill (usual technique: remove sticker, drill a small hole in the appropriate place, inject ink until it leaks out), and though the printer complains when it thinks the initial cartridge should be expended, simply holding the 'Cancel' button for 10 seconds will get it to proceed (seems to only be needed once). Of course, the printer can no longer track the ink levels, but that's a small price to pay for saving hundreds of dollars over the life of the printer.
I've used the scanner a few times, and it works fine and not as slow as our previous printer. I appreciate the document feeder, which makes it quick to scan multiple pages.
Bottom line: this is a great little printer to have sitting on your desk for the family to use.
I primarily bought this for the automatic document feeder with scanning function. I have used it to scan multiple-page documents for financial claims and other filing needs. The duplex scanning function is not automatic but the supplied scanning software makes it alsmost as easy as automatic: after scanning it asks if you want to scan the other side and prompts you to flip the pages. It picks back up and stiches the file together in whatever format you selected (image or PDF).
The photo printing qualify using quality photo paper is good. It certainly isn't as good as professional prints but is good enough for sending to the grandparents or putting in a photo album.
General printing is good and as expected in B&W and color, although I use an old and inexpensive laserjet for B&W volume.
Both the supplied task management software and front-mounted buttons get good scores. To be honest, I would have appreciate some words to accompany the buttons on the printer since it took some time to remember which one scans and which one copies. Once I figure that out, it was easier than opening the scanning software, since it auto-launches with the button press.
The wireless networking features are also good and I was able to print from the iPhone within minutes of setting it up.
I have not used the fax function so I can't speak to it, but will update the review if I do.
It isn't perfect - I would expect a SOHO printer to have an Ethernet port; this one has only WiFi and USB. The WiFi is fairly easy to configure, although if you aren't using WPS you must connect the printer to your computer via USB and complete the setup that way. Plugging in an Ethernet cable would be a lot simpler and more secure.
The printer is also quite noisy; there is a great deal of thumping and clacking when it prints. The output tray is ridiculously short, 6.5 inches - just barely past the middle of a standard sheet of paper. The pages hang very far down and have sometimes fallen off.
Finally, I have to nominate the scanner software for 'Most Ridiculous Bug of the Year'; as you scan, the scanned images come out in whatever orientation seems good at the time. That is, the first image may be upright, the next page will be upside down, and the third page might be sideways. Image orientation seems to be completely random; it certainly has nothing to do with the way you feed them into the scanner. Using the document feeder or placing them on the glass one at a time makes no difference. Fortunately, at least on MacOS, flipping the orientation is very easy - but this bug should absolutely have been caught.
If you want high quality printing and scanning and don't mind a few inconveniences, this is a great printer.
