Product Description
Since its introduction in 2008, the Exos Series has become a standard on the Appalachian Trail and with ultralight enthusiasts not willing to sacrifice comfort. Our AirSpeed suspension, torso-specific sizing and ergonomic design all contribute to bridge the gap between comfort, fit and light weight. The Spring 2014 redesign benefits from Osprey's never-ending search for the latest technology in materials and hardware as well as innovative design. The comfort and support of the harness and hip belt are drastically improved. Updated materials and hardware provide a lighter weight pack and the lid, key straps and attachment points are all removable.

Other than that, this pack is great. I've had it loaded up to ~27 lbs (base + water + food) and it handled the weight well. Front panel is super stretchy and great for rain gear or anything damp. Side pockets worked well for water (1L Smart Water bottles) with room to spare for tent poles. Left strap gear loops were a plus to hold the trekking poles when bouldering, and the shoulder strap pockets are surprisingly big.
I opted for the medium. The pack breathed well, even in very hot, very humid conditions. The shoulder straps were very comfortable. Wearing a tank top the mesh left marks that made my skin temporarily look like scales but was not one bit uncomfortable nor did it damage or rash my skin. I had the waist as tight as possible and I would have tightened it just a bit more if I the straps allowed; I could have gone with a small. The waist is not interchangeable like many other Osprey packs. However, due to the low weight of the pack, the ever so slightly loose waist didn't make travel uncomfortable nor did I feel like the weight was overly bearing on my shoulders.
One of the waist pockets did fit my iPhone 6, which has a bulky plastic case. The other pocket was perfect for odds and ends.
Amazing pack which I fully intend to continue to use until another lightweight pack hits the market that catches my eye. The pack did withstand this trip with only a small tear which I'll have repaired. I'm sure it'll get nicked here and there, a trade off I'm happy to make for the low weight of the pack. A repair kit doesn't weigh much either.
Highly recommended for minimalists or those looking to lighten their load. Just be aware of your surroundings and what comes in contact with the pack to avoid tears.
Happy trails!
With the lighter weight you will have to be more careful with the material in the wild, the mesh pocket is great and has great stretch but it is more delicate as a result. Laying the pack on it could tear it if placed on sharp rocks etc. The pack doesnt like to stand on it's own so you need to be mindful when you put it down as to not tear either the mesh pocket or the mesh back panel. The water bottle pockets are great, while worn with the bottle in your right hand, push your slim bottle through the side opening of the mesh pouch on the left side then push upward and it is properly sitting in the bottle pocket. Then you can grab your bottles or replace them without taking off the pack. You will have to take care with the thinner webbing and smaller buckles in places. And the fact that certain things like the armstraps, brain etc, are connected to the pack with short 3mm paracord loops rather than sewn into the pack mean this pack is not meant for rough treatment.
The armstrap and hipbelt pockets, color and lighter weight are why I chose to buy this 2017 version at the end of the 2018 summer instead of the current model version. The new 2018 version removes the pockets completely, increases overall weight and changes the colors in a way I didnt care for. I was surprised to see this change. To improve on this pack they should have made it out of waterproof material (xpac or similar,) enlarged the hip belt pockets to accommodate large cellphones, added cinches to the small armstrap pockets, made the brain-less flap removable and possibly added some stretch mesh pockets to the interior.
Even with the odd changes and limitations with the new model vs the old, this pack is the most direct value to the dollar out there in the UL game, perhaps a tie with the Gregory Optic. You can pay more for features that suit you better but you will pay disproportionately more in almost every case. The current sub-$200 price range for this pack gives you a great pack with a great warranty.
