**update on initial review***I thought I was done in new hunting stuff other than replace worn out duds but NO!Found a new do-dad and bought it:Bushnell Equinox Z Digital Night Vision Monocular1. Larger than it looks like in the photos online. It is about 2x as large as a good hand held range finder2. Heavy. Heavy without the batteries and the batteries do not add too much to the weight.3. It comes with a carry zipper bag. It fits but it takes effort to get it back in the bag.4. Buttons are all black so hard to see in the dark. The feel to each button is similar and not distinctive so you can not tell what button you are near. This gets more difficult wearing any glove.5. Night vision is good. I can see out at least 200 yards at night.6. It does not come with a reticle so using this to use as a scope for hog or night varmint hunting is not appliable if you mount this on a gun/crossbow etc.7. It does come with a Weaver rail.8. It has a slot so you can mount it on a tripod you need that for long term viewing as the picture can wobble.9. Fine in daylight but with good binos that is not a big feature10. It has a mini SD slot to take pictures or videos. I have not worked that feature yet.11. I picked the 40mm ibjective over the 50mm as I wanted a wider field of view. I think that is needed for night views, too short a FOV you may miss a miving target slipping through the night.12. Nice IR, I doubt any critter will notice the IR

Good product, good price, quick delivery.
Live in the forest, works well in full darkness with IR, but for covert use I bought a separate 940 nm IR light that I hook up to the rail included on the unit. The IR built into the unit does show up as a fairly bright red light even at several hundred feet. I used a small Pulsar PL79076 940 IR Night Vision Flashlight I also got on Amazon, and it works well for us.
Do not need the IR if the moon is out, as it works pretty well as a starlight scope.
Hooked it up to our security camera DVR, worked fine, but can not use it for any thing but short term as it times out and shuts down to quickly to be of any use. Wish their was a way to over ride the auto timeout shut off.
Also wish it had a jack to hook up a external power supply for long term use about the home. If it did it could double as a security camera, and could also leave it out to catch the elk when they make their night time raids on the fruit trees.
I use rechargeable batteries and have a extra set with me when I go out to use it, as the battery life is not all that long, and is nice to have something to get back on the bear or whatever if the batteries go south on you.
on board photo and motion camera recording are not all that bad for the price.
We are happy with ours, I would recommend it I recon.

I've read the reviews and researched the different types and all the brands and yada yada. After much debate, I elected to go digital versus conventional. In that department, these seemed to fit the bill better than most of the others.

Pro's

Very tough, Nice picture (Once focused-more on that), Ability to take photos and video. Ability to turn off the IR, Ability to see more than 50 yards(It does), Ability to rifle mount(It does with mount available through bushnell, Not that I would, but), Above all, it actually works at night. (It does and it does it very well.

Cons

Its a battery hog. (They all are)
A little heavy (Not really an issue)
Magnification is quite high so field of view can become an issue if you aren't prepared. (Prevalent in all of them unless you want to spend thousands) You might ask why I didn't get the 3X? Because you cant take pictures or video with it.

That's about it. On to the focus. First, there are many ways to adjust brightness in this unit, so don't let the other reviews that complain talk you out of it. It does exactly what its supposed to. You need to follow the directions on how to focus this and the other units. First turn on and focus the eye piece to the lcd inside the unit. Then, never touch it again unless someone else uses it, then just refocus when you use it. Then, focus the lens out to the distant, or near, object. That's all there is to it, hit record for video or picture if desired and have fun in the dark! This thing is awesome but you might want to get some rechargeable batteries i'm thinkin'....

The photo is from my living room couch to the sink in total darkness, about 30 feet, without IR and only ambient light from the windows.

I've been intrigued by night vision devices for some time now but have resisted purchasing anything until now due to the almost universally poor reviews of traditional Gen 1 devices (as well as the early digital devices). But with the release of the new Equinox Z, I decided to take a chance.

Bushnell offers 3 monoculars in its Equinox Z lineup, 3x, 4.5x, and 6x magnification. I chose 3x because I wanted less magnification and a larger field of view for greater peripheral awareness. The 3x device partially delivers on that--the problem is that focusing is slow and laborious, so don't think you can use this while moving around. It's much better suited to stationary use. It should also be noted that the 3x device lacks the video recording feature of its bigger brothers, but 640x480 video wasn't that appealing to me anyway and it's ~$40 cheaper than the 4.5x scope.

Other items of note, which are applicable across the entire Equiniox Z lineup:
1. This device was much larger than expected. It's not exactly pocketable. The included wrist strap isn't that useful...maybe a full-on neck strap would have been better. On the other hand, the lens cap is conveniently attached via a lanyard.
2. Ergonomics are somewhat awkward. The buttons are too close to the IR illuminator on the right side for a comfortable one handed right hand grip. It feels much more comfortable to operate the buttons with my left hand, but there is a fairly useless rail on the left side that gets in the way.
3. When on, the IR illuminator is quite visible to others in low light / darkness. The upside is that it is quite powerful.
4. It is actually useable with no IR illumination in some low light conditions (which can't be said of traditional Gen 1 night vision). You have to toggle the sensitivity which reduces the frame rate to 8 fps, but it is useable. Since the frame rate is slow, it's best suited for slow or stationary objects, but that is an excellent capability for a ~$200 device!
5. Light sources tend to flare in the viewfinder, necessitating toggling the sensitivity button, which still results in a contrasty image that sacrifices details in the shadows.
6. The viewfinder image is very bright, especially in low light. Using this device will practically blind you in that eye until you can readjust to the dark. I wish there was some way to adjust the brightness setting.
7. It takes 4 AA batteries, which is great. I try to stick with electronics that use AA or AAA instead of CR123, so I can use my rechargeable batteries.

Also, it must be said that digital night vision devices lack the allure of traditional devices. You don't get the high pitched whine or green tinted image (at least with the Equinox Z). Instead of feeling like Sam Fisher, you feel like you are looking through a sensitive camcorder, which isn't far from the truth! Still, this is a pretty good package for the entry-level price.

I am very pleased with this product so far. I have only used it a few times to check to see what our dogs were yapping about. (usually gophers) The image is very clear with little or no ambient light source. They seem to be very well made. I have not taken any videos yet, and have only taken one picture, that I believe is adequate quality considering the specifications of the device. The device has to be powered on for daytime use, this surprised me at first, but after I thought about it, realized that it made sense. The image in daylight is color, but seems slightly distorted to me. The batteries (4 AA Energizer Lithium in my case) seem to drain very quickly when using the IR light.I would not expect them to last for much more than 30 min of use if that.

Update: 5/2/2016
Battery life has turned out to be better than I expected. Very nice product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Prodotto da acquistare senza eccessive pretese

I've never handled anything like this before but within a few minutes I had everything figured out. Out-of-the-box the fine adjustment (objective lens) for focusing was way off; I had to turn it a lot, like probably several full rotations. This makes sense because it's really sensitive but you don't seem to have to touch it much after finding the optimal position. The button layout is intuitive and very simple giving you quick and easy control over the many viewing options. I ran around turning off all the lights in my apartment and then flipped through the different IR (infrared LED illumination settings) via the "IR" button. Wow. Images are processed through a digital CMOS sensor module and then transferred to a micro LCD which are then magnified; you have +/- zoom buttons which work amazingly well, very smooth. The quality of this device has blown my mind. I never would have thought I'd be able to afford something that gives me the ability to see in total darkness with perfect clarity. You can add a micro SD card up to 32GB (no internal memory) for recording purposes. Camping, stargazing, security surveillance, fishing/hunting--possibilities are limited only by the imagination. Also included is a video out (NTSC/PAL) to connect to a computer for recording or "live" monitoring and is tripod mountable. If you can imagine a use for this product, it is definitely worth the cost. I have absolutely no sense whatsoever that this is a cheap knockoff. Its quality in every way far exceeded all of my expectations. Very handy.
