The unit seems to work well now that it is setup. I am not sorry I bought it. Do not expect to open the box and use it without some time on the computer.
Seeing as how I'll be taking a trip to Florida in about 2 weeks I needed to get a new unit & went with this one, Go 50S. I've only had it about a day thus far but have spent several hours with it thus far updating software/maps & programing it for my trip.
The unit looks sleek & nice & the screen is pretty decent. I'd have to say it is a slight upgrade from the 1535TM. I would have loved to see a more cellphone-esk type screen on such a new unit. Unsure as to why they don't go that wrote vs this old school type touch screen.
The screen does not seem to respond as well to touch as my 1535TM did & find myself constantly trying to hit buttons/keys etc. Also the Calibration seems to be slightly off & as of yet have not found a calibration option as of yet. Haven't really looked but did go through the settings menu for something else & didn't see it. Also trying to add custom points/destinations etc is very difficult. I have to try pushing the screen over & over & over again to get it to add the point where I want it. With my 1535TM it was very easy & responsive to touching & usually end up with additional points I didn't need/want.(I'd rather have over response then lack there of)
Searching for Addresses and POI's seems to be a bit more frustrating as well. Now this may not be all the units fault, I can't be sure where the issue is here. But searching for Disney World locations on the units pulls up a ton of locations, understandable. So I googled the addresses of the specific ones I wanted. Got the addresses but the addresses I found were not matching up with what was in the unit. For Example Magic Kingdom I believe comes up as 3111 World Dr, Lake Beuna Visa, FL 32830 (from memory I maybe a bit off) but the unit would have tons of others, one of which was 3111 World Dr, Bay Lake. Again I don't know if this is just something with the unit & how it's programed with the info or something else because other sites came up with slightly different stuff as well.
When trying to navigate from a point after pulling up the address or close address to the park or location I wanted, I've learned that most GPS units don't plan for the locations actual parking area you need to go to. So I located those places & wanted to put those points on the unit. Again going back to response to touch & stuff had difficulty with that & also had issues with the unit just cycling to some random spot near the point I was at or had searched for. This became very frustrating.
Another issue I ran into was trying to search for a location other then my location or those near me. I would select the icon to switch locations & then select the city/zip option & try to enter that & then go back to typing in an address or name and the unit would default back to near me option. So would have to constantly go back to the location section to correct that. Eventually it would save that info.
Features I'm also missing as some others have mentioned is customization of the colors of the screen as well as the pointer icon. I liked being able to change that to a SUV. Though on the ones that do have that option wish they had a truck option as I drive a Truck.lol
I will update this when I have more things to share & more next month after my trip to Florida & see how it does with actual navigation & how the pre-programed points worked out.
**Update 6/7/14 - So I used the unit around here a bit picking up my kids from various schools & then home. A feature not included in this model which I think should be a must for any unit is "add my location". None of the childrens schools are listed in the unit, whereas I know my daughters middle school was a POI/School in the 1535TM unit. But in this one it was not, then trying to add that location as well as the others was impossible as there was no address to add.(trying to look up a schools address at least for my area is like looking for the holy grail, they give you the district offices physical & mail address but trying to find individual schools addresses wow...lol) And trying to drop a custom location pin just would not work for me in either of the 3 school locations. I pushed & pushed till I was frustrated as heck & to the point I wanted to put my finger through the screen.
I had also purchased Darth Vader & Yoda voices for my 1535TM unit & had hoped I'd be able to use them with this unit especially after I had updated the unit & loaded in the voices section but when I tried to select them it wouldn't let me. I had also sent a msg to find out from Tomtom Support & got the reply after this stating they are per device. Which I'm sorry is just not very good. I'm paying $170+ for a device and then another $12 per voice & I can't just move those to another device? Thats just bad, what makes it even worse in my case is I just spent $140 in March for my 1535TM, now in May I had to buy a new device another $170+ b/c at now fault of my own but just a freak thing the other unit got broken & now that money spent on additional voices is wasted? Subtracting a star for these issues 2 to 1 star.
I'm seriously frustrated with this product & now service from the manufacturer**
Top reviews from other countries
The screen is rather low resolution and an old fashioned resistive screen. This day in age, even the cheapest no name tablets have better screens than this. It is slow to respond, slow to update, and rather dull. The device itself also feels and looks rather flimsy compared to my very old Garmin Nuvi. The integrated windshield suction cup design is good, though, the cup itself seems to stick better to flat surfaces than any other suction cup type mounting system I have ever tried. It will stick firmly even before locking it on. If a flimsy device and old fashioned screen are going to drive you crazy (you're a heavy user, for example...we are not) then you may want to just bite the bullet and get the GO 500 or GO 600.
The traffic service seems to be a good idea, if you happen to already have a data plan. However, I discovered a major problem with the Android app required to use the traffic/speed trap services in that it will not work/connect correctly at all if using the Android ART runtime (optional on Kitkat releases, but soon to become the default with Lollipop). You must set your phone back to the DALVIK runtime on the current version of the app otherwise it is completely nonfunctional.
I have reported this to TomTom Support as well as on the Google Play app listing, time will tell if they correct the issue as when Android 5.0 hits next month they are going to have a lot more people wondering why they can no longer get the traffic service to connect/activate on their phones.
