Brady BMP21-PLUS Label Printer is tough on the outside and smart on the inside. BMP21-PLUS has ultra rugged construction and world class materials combined in a toolbox-ready fit-in-your-palm label printer that produces continuous-only labels up to 3/4" wide. Choose from 70 label parts across 8 incredibly durable materials including self-laminating wire markers, heat-shrink wire sleeves, cable flags, 8-to-10-year outdoor vinyl, nylon cloth wire and panel labels, terminal block and patch panel labels, and chemical-resistant polyester and polypropylene. When it comes to durability, the BMP21-PLUS has heavy-duty molded-rubber impact bumpers and an optional hard carry case, and it has been drop-tested to MIL drop-test standards. Industry-specific features include backlit display for low-light work areas, one-touch setup for aire, flagging, T-block, patchpanel and breaker box apps, and 125 symbols for electrical, datacom, A/V, smart home and safety. Unique features include a built-in label grabber device that prevents your cut label from falling to the ground after it's cut, one-handed label cut operation, and an optional magnet accessory for mounting the printer to a metal panel or surface for hands-free operation. Operates on (6) AA batteries, optional rechargeable Li-ION battery, or optional AC adapter. 2 year included.

The labels themselves are very high quality and there is a label for any application you might have. When it's time to cut a label, the manual (built-in) cutter is very easy to operate and fully cuts the label.
Another pleasant surprise is battery life, I've printed an entire 16' cassette of labels (and a few others) and the battery still shows to be full.
Cons: Honestly I can't think of any.
Key things that I like:
a) You can create and store files for future printing
b) You can print vertically as well as horizontally
c) There are several label type options (Banner Landscape, Wire Maker, Patch Panel, etc.)
d) Font size (standard and bold)
e) You can place text in barcode format
f) You have the option to use 6 AA batteries or an rechargeable battery (none are included)
This particular model doesn't have the kickstand on it nor does it have the magnet on the back.....there's a small hole on the back of it for something to be screwed on, I guess it's for the optional magnet.
All-In-All this is a great printer for the field. I hope to use it for years to come!
The optional AC adapter gets less than 5 stars due to high price. If you don't happen to have a 4 amp (or more) 9 volt DC output adapter, get one from another source and build a crossover cable (or buy one with a crossover cable) because (as another buyer pointed out) the center pin is negative. Observe this unorthodox polarity and you're good to go. There's a vendor on the website that begins with the letter "e" that provides the proper 9volt 4 amp adapter with crossover cable, for half of what Brady charges, and it works perfectly.
Battery state:
< ~7.1V battery showed empty
7.1V - 7.6V showed almost empty
> 7.6V showed battery is full
Power consumption:
On (no backlight) - ~8.8mA
On (with backlight) - ~24mA
Printing - ~380mA to 400mA
Off - ~35uA
So knowing that at about 1.2V per NiMH battery was about 50% left of charge, and with all 6 batteries in series this equals about 7.2V. Once the unit goes below 7.0V, it won't turn back on. The back light will flicker once when you hit the power button and that's all you get. This may be the way it done to help protect their lithium ion battery from getting too low. Either way, thought I would point it out. Besides that, here are some Pros and Cons for the unit:
Pros:
* Reliable printing. I have run a few tapes through and haven't had an issue with one yet.
* The back light is nice and bright. Can see everything just fine in daylight as well.
* Different printing types. You can choose from landscape, portrait, wire wrap, patch panel, fuse panel, as well as a few others.
* Feels nice and solid. For the price, you definitely feel like you got a good bit of kit
* Easy to cut the labels with either your left or right hand. Might be small, but some other units only have the cutter buttons on one side. With this, you don't have to shuffle the unit around just to cut. May be small, but I found it a nice feature to have.
* The cartridge mechanism is very nice. It's easy to pop out the old cartridge, and throw in a new one.
Cons:
* The price of cartridges is expensive.
* Some label modes have excessive white space at the edges, even when you try to specify very little to no white space.
* Max label size is .75". Big enough for anything I need, but worth pointing out.
* The battery life with NiMH. They should think about having a menu selection or something that would switch between battery types that are being used, so you could get more life out of them.
* Can only print 4 lines. On some label types, there is a ton of white space left after the 4th line which is just unused real estate now.
* Lithium ion battery and charger are sold separate and also expensive. On top of that, you have to remove the lithium ion battery from the unit to charge it. Not sure how that is practical, but that's how they say it must be done.
* Very very slight drain on the batteries when the unit is off. At 30uA current draw when off, worst case, you could maybe expect 1mAh drained from the battery a day. With a decent NiMH battery having 1800mAh, it should take it awhile to get all batteries in series down to the 7.0V mark. This is of course ignoring batteries that tend to self discharge quicker than others.
