The 55w of power is enough to add some UMPH to any stock system, it sounds like I installed a sub in addition in my 08 Impreza sedan, very very impressed with sound quality and customization of audio features.
The flashy color-changing faceplate is a nice touch, I cycle through colors depending on my mood.
Easy set up with Bluetooth, I find myself enjoying improved sound quality much more than my hands-free voice controlled features.
NFC pairing worked the first time I used the stereo. After that, for some reason active Bluetooth scan mode turned itself off (seriously, I didn't touch a thing in those menus), and NFC pairing no longer functioned, and I couldn't connect to the stereo. I turned Bluetooth scan back on and the NFC pairing / BT connection worked again. Weird glitch, probably a firmware issue. Because of the location of the NFC chip (the volume knob), some phones may have difficulty getting the positioning right. It would have been a lot better on a button near the middle and bottom of the unit. There is a manual pairing mode toggle in the BT settings of the stereo, and it's not terribly hard to find.
Bluetooth audio itself works great, though the unit doesn't recognize track titles and often garbles track numbers on the display, so that's kind of a bummer (it may just be the music app I'm using on my phone). I've never had any weird disconnects or interference caused by the BT mode. I haven't yet tried the aux cable input, though I suspect like most it's not particularly great. Sound quality over Bluetooth is excellent, I'm very much satisfied with the advancements over earlier generations of Bluetooth head units.
I did not install the microphone or USB cable, so I can't comment on those, and I don't use the Bluetooth phone functionality.
The CD player seems top-notch, I've had no issues, and the sound quality is noticeably better than my previous Alpine unit (granted, that thing was 10+ years old).
The menus, once you get used to them after spending 10-15 minutes looking around, are super simple to navigate and very intuitive. They're not perfect, but for a single-DIN block LED display I couldn't ask for a whole lot more in terms of ease of use. If you're not very tech-savvy, read the manual - you're going to need it, this stereo has a lot of options. I did have to read the manual for information on configuring the color of the display to a custom setting and the various audio tweaks that can be made to this unit. The most useful, I'd say, are the ability to stagger the firing of your speakers front vs. rear for more balanced audio and the Sony C-Audio mode, which amps up the dynamic range, bass, and treble of the audio. It's particularly good for radio, though I typically turn it off when using Bluetooth or CDs, since they sound good as-is. The EQ settings I haven't dabbled with much, but they seem as robust as anything in this price bracket.
I did not opt for the HD radio model, and I don't use satellite radio, so I can't comment there. I also don't use the Pandora or USB modes, so I'm not much help on those.
The Android control app for the stereo is moderately useful, but it's clunky and slow. I don't use it - it's generally easier just to dig into the menus once you've got a handle on them and do it that way. Using the app just takes too long, even if it is more visual / decipherable. The included physical remote is a nice add-on if you've got passengers, but otherwise I don't use it.
Aesthetically, this is as good-looking a single-DIN aftermarket head unit as you're going to find. I drive an old Mercedes, and frankly, there's nothing modern out there that's going to fit the aesthetic of that car very well. But compared to the old Alpine I had in there, the Sony is 100x more subdued. Far fewer faux-chrome plastic pieces, less shiny plastic overall, and the carbon fiber trim along the top edge isn't all that noticeable. With a mild beige color scheme on the display, it fits in well enough with my old Benz that it doesn't immediately scream "AFTERMARKET RADIO!" like so many of the fashion disasters out there. Overall, I really like this unit, and at $180 it's priced right.
Why 4 stars and not 5? Frankly, the control app needs work, the NFC chip location is a nuisance, and the fact that we're still using block LED displays in radios in 2014 is sad. You could put a full-color LCD in there, Sony - you're just too cheap.
Top reviews from other countries
The issue I'm having is the unpredictable nature of the faceplate, sometimes the buttons and knobs work and sometimes they simply don't respond. Regardless of resetting the unit, swearing, using the remote, leaving the head unit under a pile of my dirty socks overnight, syncing/unsyncing my smartphone, threatening, detaching the faceplate, killing the ignition, disconnecting the battery, giving it a timeout, plugging in usb sticks, auto-pairing, forcing it to watch old reruns of "Silver Spoons", installing, uninstalling and reinstalling the app provided in the owners manual. and not allowing it to watch the conclusion to the cliffhanger of Happy Dayz when "The Fonz" jumped the shark on his motor cycle. There is no pattern to it's unresponsiveness, the head unit will respond when it deems ready not a moment before. Sometimes it's immediate, sometimes 2 minutes, sometimes 20 minutes. Eventually it will respond, but only after you accept the fact that it is in control, not you.
Having performed the install myself I have no professional shop to complain to, although I can confidently say it is wired correctly. I've always been a tech nerd with a natural gift for reading and following instructions. I studied the wiring pattern in the owners manual once I realized the after market RCA harness I'd purchased was sub-par and the source of a loud buzz through the speakers. I then made notes, applied labeled multicolored tape and after several hours of studying the wiring diagram of my 96 LR I meticulously fished, cut and spliced every connection.
The only thing that works all the time, every time, is the aforementioned app provided in the owners manual. I've set the unit to auto pair through blue tooth and within seconds I can control the unit via smartphone while I patiently wait for my physical buttons to be released from purgatory. And I now have one more reason to wrestle my phone away from my autistic son. This dear reader, is good enough for me. Will I uninstall the unit and send it back for replacement warranty? Hell no! Too much time and effort were involved, too many tears and with the possibility of a replacement DOA I stand firmly by my decision. Besides, not only do I have a beautiful sounding stereo, I have a stereo with a personality similar to that of my ex-wife's, unresponsive, unpredictable and never ready when I am, Well done Sony, you never cease to amaze me.
