Why did I wait so long?
I've always wanted one of these apple peelers... and I read all the reviews for almost all the different models. I settled on the the Purelite even though it was a bit more expensive than the others. The fact that it's cast iron appealed to my need for durability (I hate when tools break!) and the suction base sounded the best set-up for my counter top. It is well made and very compact. No problem finding a space for it among the other kitchen tools. I set it up right over the sink so the peels go right into the sink. My counter is made of solid engineered stone, smooth finish and this thing really stays in place! There was some adjusting to do to get the tension just right. The peeler wanted to take too big a bite out of the apple. But, once I got it set right and figured out that you had to turn the handle quickly and push the apple toward the corer, it all came together. There is a little bit of work to take off a bit of peel here and there... especially at either end of the apple. I just decided that part was for the cook, so instead of worrying about getting that little bit off, I just ate the little pieces at both ends! LOL! Cook's treat! Seriously, this thing works great, cleaned up fast and I made a ton of applesauce in little time. It's great!

Really like this. The quality is very good. Solid metal parts that operate smoothly and effectively. The rubber base secures easily by turning the lever in either direction. Putting an apple on the unit is easy and it peeled a variety of smaller windfall and larger store bought apples cleanly. Core is minimal left after finishing. I was impressed by the concept and the actual process. Brilliant! It slices the apple too in perfect width for pies but leaves as a unit so it is easy to make the minimal cuts to make slices.
I recommend for speed in pie making but also for the "cool" factor. It fascinates adults and kids alike. It does have sharp edges but reasonable adult setup and oversight ought to make this peeler a fun memory making event for children.

In addition, it works well for one-handed adults. Sometimes the smallest things like peeling an apple to eat is impossible when someone is disabled and lost the use of a hand but this tool allows them to do for themselves and not have to ask for help just to eat an apple.

I've only used this for about 20 apples. I imagine at some point it will get dull and possibly need a replacement cutter, especially if used all the time but so far just rinsing it under running faucet and sitting on the counter to dry it hasn't rusted - so that's another kudos.

Peeling apples and coring them is such a chore that I avoided making desserts with fresh apples. The Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite put making great apple desserts easy. A great time saver and a solid product! Update: We have had the Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite for a time now and find that we are using it quite a bit. The product is very well made in cast iron which gives the apple peeler solid heft and has a suction cup to keep it anchored so it doesn’t move around on your kitchen counters. The blades are razor sharp stainless steel which makes for ease of use. The Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite is great for that dreaded chore, at least for me of peeling potatoes. The Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite is also great for slicing. This apple peeler encourages healthy snacking with the ease of using it. We have made many apple desserts now including apple turnovers, apple pie and apple crisp. I also like to keep apple slices on hand for my grandchildren so they can grab them whenever they want a snack. Granny Smith apples are their favorites as well as my husbands. The Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite is a great addition to any kitchen and would also make a great gift for fellow foodies. The Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite is also easy to clean and easy to store. I would recommend the Cast Iron Apple Peeler by Purelite for its quality and for its value.

I recently purchased a dehydrator, and wanted to try drying apple slices. In checking out apple peelers, I chose this model because it is cast iron and I figured it would hold up better and would be heavier on the counter top. I've never used one of these before, and it's very easy, once you set the proper amount of peel to be removed. I was able to core, peel and slice 8 apples in less than 10 minutes. A++ for that. The corer and/or slicer can be dropped down to simply peel apples if you so desire. Now the cons: this peeler is fairly small, much smaller than I expected. I had to choose small, symmetrical apples at the store to make sure they would fit. Not a big deal, but if you have an apple tree or farmer's market close to you, something to consider. Potatoes will be a problem; directions say to cut potatoes in half and slice half at a time. I also purchased pears to core and slice; but haven't put them to the test. Be sure to pick firm fruit.
UPDATE: Just tried to core and slice pears: this won't do them. I assume because they are not symmetrical. I've tried putting the pears on from both ends, but they will go only so far and that's it. I ended up with 1/3 peeled sliced pears, and a juicy mess of unusable pears. So if you want to use this for apples, it works on small ones, but absolutely WON'T do pears.

I needed to make an apple pie from a family recipe for the first time, and my knife skills are not tremendous. So, after some product research, I landed on this item. It is FANTASTIC!

It is very light weight, which is good and was unexpected. Very easy to move, get out, store, and maneuver. The suction is just ok -- get a couple of fingers damp first and moisten the rubber base before trying to get it to stick to the counter. But you really don't need powerful suction for this device.

It cores and spiral-slices beautifully. It also optionally peels (nice to have the option).

There are some limitations: the apple must be within a normal size range; large apples have a lot of trouble. Don't cut yourself on the very sharp mechanisms. "Mealy" apples may not hold on the sharp tines, but I haven't tested this. And this: ** be sure to put the apple on CENTERED and STRAIGHT! If you don't, funny things will happen to your apples!

The recipe turned out perfectly well! My 92yo grandmother (whose recipe I was attempting) gave it her robust approval! I've also used it for easily dicing apples for oatmeal and, yes, tuna salad. (If you've not tried tiny diced apples with tuna/mayo/mustard/dill/salt/pepper, you don't know what you are missing!!)

Never again will I look at an apple and think, ugh what a chore to cut/slice/dice this thing up.

This is the first time I have ever reviewed a product, but I don't want others to make the same mistake I made and purchase this product. This is my second apple peeler that I have owned. The last one I had for over 20 years and absolutely loved it! This is not the same creature at all! It's light weight and poorly constructed. It won't stay suctioned to the counter, the blade is so flimsy that it bends as the apple is trying to pass through the core mechanism, and I have to hold the arm on the threaded rod to make it turn or it won't even begin to pass through the corer. I guess I will be making a trip back to the local orchard where I bought my last one and hope they still sell the real old fashion heavy weight peeler like I had before, so very disappointed.
