I Recommend it
This hub seems to be performing much better. The blue lights/ switches are interesting, but so far, I have the ports all switched on all the time, so I can't comment on their performance. No more weird errors and disconnections, it's great on performance. The cable is a bit longer than I'd like. It takes a fair amount of effort to push a USB into the hub, so I feel like it's very secure, though it's a little annoying. I'm not using it for memory sticks so I don't unplug things often.
Sadly, it's the opposite of cute. The design with the lighted buttons looks outdated to me. It's another functional, squared-off black desktop accessory. It just doesn't spark joy like a smiling pink sparkly hub with bunny ears.
During use with my Mac Mini, it was having problems with initially recognizing a device connection (either a USB flash drive or an iPhone), copy operations not completing or stalling, or sometimes corrupting the inserted flash drive.
At first I thought perhaps these flash drives were consuming excessive power and I considered getting a powered hub instead. But after reading various horror-stories about powered hubs where they toasted the connected device (potentially resulting in a repair bill that approached the value of the whole system it was connnected to as oftentimes the USB ports are soldered directly to the system board), I was wary of going that way too.
So I decided to get this small inexpensive hub from a company I know about and based on their product description it seems that it had been much more extensively tested on a variety of platforms.
When I got down to testing the Sabrent I was very happy to discover that it immediately fixed all the reliability problems that plagued that other USB 3.0 hub I had been trying to make work.
At first I didn't think I'd care about the per-port power buttons on this. But after working with it for a while I realized they can be very handy if you have a particular device you use a lot, you can just leave it connected continuously, "eject" it when you're done, and instead of physically disconnecting it from the hub and putting it away each time, just leave it in the hub, turn the switch for its port off (Which functionally is identical to pulling the drive out of the port), and when you're ready to use it again, just turn the switch on again.
Considering I'm using it a lot with VirtualBox, which can be very finicky with USB support - especially USB 3.0 - and it still works perfectly, I give this item a perfect 5-star rating. (Kind of rare for me. 😁)
I purchased this hub with switches, along with an Amazon Basics USB 3.0 extension cable. I received them yesterday and both are very nice, and I am sure they work fine. But they did not work for my intended purpose. ||
I have a digidesign MBox2 and Pro Tools LE 8 setup on a Windows 7 32-bit PC. Pro Tools will only run if you have the MBox2 device connected via the USB cable to a USB port on the computer. The MBox2 is old, so I assume it is USB 2. But I don't want to have the MBox2 always powered on when I am using the computer for other things, which is most of the time. So I am always having to plug it in and unplug it on the back of the computer. So I was looking for a USB switch so I could leave it plugged in and just turn it on and off, and found this. GREAT! And it has a very short cord, so I bought the 3-ft extension to use with it. ||
But I was so disappointed when I hooked it all up and tried it and it would not work for me. ||
1. With only the new switch plugged in to the computer and the USB 2 cord from the MBox2 plugged in to the switch, with it turned on, Pro Tools will start up and load my project. But when I click the "Play" button, instead of playing the tracks it gives the message: "Your audio clock frequency is different from your bit rate . . . " or something like that, so it is not usable. ||
2. With only the AmazonBasics USB 3.0 3-ft extension cable connected from the computer to the USB 2 cord from the MBox2, Pro Tools will not complete starting up, giving the message that my MBox2 is already in use by another program, so please quit that program and try again. ||
HELP!! It seemed like such a great idea to put this nice-looking, quality switch in between the MBox2 and the computer. ||
Is my problem based on the USB 3.0 - 2.0 connection I am trying to make? Is there such a thing as a 3.0 cable with a "Type B" style connector that would plug into the MBox2? Or does the 3.0 standard just mess with the "audio clock rate" that I just can't work around? Can I find a similar switch that is USB 2.0? I only need 1 channel, not 4.
Thanks. I will be highly impressed if anyone can solve this.
UPDATE: I bought the USB 2.0 4-port hub and an Amazon Basics USB 2.0 extension cable. The 2.0 hub/switch gives the same error, so a switch is just not compatible with the MBox and Pro Tools.
However, the USB 2.0 extension cable works to plug in the main USB cable, so that is my solution to reduce wear and tear on the USB sockets.
Top reviews from other countries
The high-speed USB 3.0 compatibility ensures fast data transfer rates, making it ideal for tasks such as transferring large files or backing up data. The extended cable provides flexibility in placing the hub wherever it's most convenient.
The setup process is straightforward; plug-and-play functionality means no driver installations are required. The hub is immediately recognized by my devices, and I can start using it right away.
The build quality and durability of the SABRENT USB Hub are impressive. The ports fit snugly and securely, preventing wiggling or accidental disconnections.
