Product Description
Made of 100-percent recycled plastic, and molded in the USA, the dark plastic color absorbs the suns heat which in turn helps heat up the materials in side, speeding up the composting process. Inside the compost bin, the walls are ribbed providing added strength and superior mixing action. The dual mixing bar greatly increases the mixing action allowing the compost to aerate with each turn. With 20 ventilation slots, the compost inside the bin will always have enough oxygen to keep it well aerated, and when standing upright, the slots allow compost tea to drain out easily into the soil. A single hole on each of the four panels of the bin make an easy-to-use port for a compost thermometer. This makes it easy to get a quick, mess-free temperature reading on the compost inside without even opening the bin. The tumbling action of the bin keeps the contents inside mixed well, creating compost in almost half the time as a stationary compost bin. The bin holds up to 60 gallons (or about 9.3 cubic feet), and the sturdy, powder coated steel legs hold the bin securely off the ground. Along with being off the ground, the twist-locking lids on either end keep animal pests out and away from the compost. The sturdy stand keeps the bin off the ground and allows for easy rotation. With compost instructions embossed on the inside of each lid, you can always have a quick reference for what items can and cannot be composted. Spin Bin Specifications: • Recycled plastic • Holds up to 60 gallons (9.3 cu ft.) • 1-Inch thick powder coated steel legs Spin Bin Features: • 20 ventilation/drainage slots • 4 compost thermometer ports • Dual locking lids • Sturdy, powder coated legs • Easy assembly only needs a Phillips screwdriver • Wide mouth for easy access to contents inside • Compost instructions embossed in each lid • Available in black

We added a few scoops of yard soil with earth worms. Now it's just an amazing worm bin.
a few drawbacks:
* A LOT of nuts and bolts to assemble, just takes a while and requires patience and dexterity.
* frame seems like it is a bit thin for the size of the bin
* frame does not lock together, so if you try to move it when it is heavy and if the legs fall off, you are likely going to have a bad time
I hauled it outside the next morning, dumped out my old compost heap (my wife would say heap of an eyesore) and I placed the spin bin in its place. I took enough of my old compost to use as a starter in the new bin. Then I added the first day's collected kitchen scraps. I spun the bin a time or two and checked inside. It did a nice job of mixing the compost with the new material. That's a lot easier than my old method of throwing it on top and having to use a steel mixer fork (about 4 feet long) to try and mix things up. So after the first few days, I see nothing to complain about and my wife will complain a lot less about how that corner of the yard looks. A win-win I'd say.
Up until now I have just done a passive compost system of throwing kitchen waste off my deck into one area and allowing it to break down. If I have to wait for a full bin to break down I will have nowhere to add waste until that happens unless I just empty it into the tub and allow it to continue breaking down. I agree with another reviewer that the container does not seem to be 60 gallons but for me perhaps that is okay as I am not sure how I will be able to handle the weight of that much material. I will check though, just to be sure this wasn't a case of false advertising.
Additional information after first emptying of bin:
Pros: The compost mix looks great. I layer kitchen scraps with yard waste and what came out was very nice. It still needs to break down a bit more in the tub where I emptied it, but I am very pleased with the compost.
Cons: The bin is VERY heavy to turn over and without support it seems a bit flimsy. I was still able to turn it and the material mixes well. Today I tried to empty it and here was the problem. I had hoped to empty it directly into a tub but that couldn't happen unless the composter was lifted higher and the I wouldn't be able to reach it to fill it. I ended up finding a heavy plastic which I placed under it and could only empty out a bit at a time. I then needed to pull the plastic with mulch from under the bin and shovel it into the tub I had standing by. Process was then repeated until the bin was emptied. This is not easy for a relatively short woman. I would like to know how others have solved these problems.
I am relatively happy with the results but the design could use some improvement although I haven't been able to figure out a suggestion. I could ideally put it near where I would like the product to be emptied but in our rainy climate I need to be able to empty my kitchen scrap bin easily without being rained on or traipsing through mud. I did see a similarly designed bin locally at a hardware store but it was smaller. Now that I see how it works, the smaller one might have been a better option but I definitely like the metal tumble bar inside and the alternative bin did not have that.
Anyway, with the use of a 7/16" open wrench (they don't specify tools) & a Phillips head screwdriver (plus a 1/2" socket for the locking nuts on the outer frame axle), I got the unit assembled fairly quickly (about an hour?) & it looks to be a beast! It took so long because there are a LOT of bolts & nuts! This is, I assume, to create a nice seal between the 4 quadrants of the barrel, so it was a worthwhile endeavor to push each of those bolts through! Do make sure to wait to tighten all those bolts until AFTER getting all 4 pieces aligned...get them started, but resist the urge to tighten right away! The lids (there's one on each end) needed a bit of coaxing...each lid has 6 flaps that fit into 6 grooves on the main barrel. When the first lid refused to play along, I inserted each flap individually & found that some of the plastic needed to be ground down a bit first. Then both lids slipped on with ease.
I haven't produced compost from it yet, but am pleased to see air vents on both halves of the barrel. I was also pleased to note that the frame is made of what appears to be some very substantial metal; not at all cheap in appearance. As mentioned in another post, I'll have to tape the frame together or the base will slip apart if I ever move it, but that is hardly a big issue. I do appreciate the "how to make compost with a Spin Bin Composter" on the back of the afore-mentioned instruction sheet, especially "Remember, compost happens!" Nice :) Now, if the company could just update those directions!l...
