What I also love about this scanner is the autocrop function of photos. You could place 3 photos on the scanner (apart from each other) and scan "photos" and it will give you 3 different image files, one per photo. This will save you so much more time than scanning it individually.
Aside from these functions the scanner is appealing in design, produces great quality scans, is very light, doesn't need much space, is directly connected to your computer (no seperate power cable), and it is very easy to use.
I am writing this review because the auto-crop option did not work right away for me and it drove me crazy (and cost me probably 2h). I had used this scanner at my mom's and knew exactly what it could do and expected the same when I bought my own. I skipped installation as I had bought the same model, but when I started to scan seperate photos during my initial scans, it wouldn't auto-crop it. And I couldn't let it go either. So I started playing around with the settings and ended up using ScanGear to preview the scans and select my own photo frames for the scan. That worked, but I was not happy. It didn't make sense and I couldn't find any help online either. Eventually I had to give up and just played around with different paper size formats, depending on what I wanted to scan. But surprisingly, after I scanned a couple of cards in the document mode, I suddenly noticed that with my final scans it was auto-cropping just as I was used to. What? I don't have any logical explanation for that, I didn't do anything special or different, it's just like it "clicked" and suddenly worked. Today I scanned another session and auto-crop worked right away, so I don't expect any issues any more now, the scanner works great! My guess is that it just needed to scan a couple times to "adjust" after using the scanner for the first time. I still don't really know what happened, but I wanted to let people know in case they experience the same. Don't despair, just keep trying and scanning, and hopefully not too much later it will work for you, too!!!
I didn't experience this issue at my moms, because I was scanning single photos over and over again, for 2 days, so there was plenty of time for the scanner to get adjusted, and I didn't know about the auto-crop function either, I found out about it by coincidence, and it make me love the scanner even more! I am so excited to get rid of all my paper piles in the house and get everything digitally organized.
The photo scan can be set from a grainy 75dpi (ugh) incrementally to 600dpi. I use 400dpi and the resulting scans typically are about 1MB individual file size (3.5x5-inch photos) with excellent resolution - of course, the scanning does one full scan at a time - I have not tried the "Auto" setting, as I use the "Custom" setting (note that all the settings are user-adjustable). If the photos are placed about 1/8-inch-plus apart, each will be transferred as one file - this is a good feature, because I typically can get up to four 3.5x5-inch or three 4x6-inch photos per scan - about 20 seconds for four photos or for a full sheet scan. These become part of the "My Image Garden" software that comes with the download - but not for long, as I import these into iPhoto. I cannot say much about Image Garden, as it is only used as a default; but the sequence from the Canon Utility 2 to Image Garden to iPhoto is very smooth.
So far in about three weeks of puttering around I have scanned approximately 1,000 old photos. I also tried the pdf function - works without a hitch. Perfect in every way.
Note: No TWAIN (technology without an interesting name) driver(s) needed - not like 20 (or egad, 30!) years ago on HP or other color scanners I had used. This is really a treat to use in comparison. And the power via USB is very nice - only if the computer goes to sleep do I have to unplug and re-plug the USB cable to wake up the scanner - without issue. As one of the other reviewers mentioned, this scanner is much better than what the all-in-one printer / fax / scanner machines can do - I have a Brother for this; the Canon is truly specific for scanning and does it quite well.
That's about all - it is a great little scanner for the money - a few weeks ago, it was $82+ through Amazon Prime. Buy it!
At a compact 14.5” x 10” x 1.5”, it fits in a standard 15.6” laptop carrier for safe transport in the trunk of my car or packed in a suitcase. USB cable for power and data means easy set-up on a hotel room desk. Solid build quality. Carriage locks for transport. Portability = 9/10.
4,800 x 4,800 dpi maximum optical resolution and 19,200 x 19,200 dpi interpolated. Resolution (for my purposes) = 10/10.
10 seconds to scan a single letter, but 8 seconds for the carriage to re-home. So figure 3 pages per minute scanning, if you stay on top of it. Speed = 8/10.
I’m using the included IJ Scanning Utility coupled with WonderShare PDF Editor running under Windows 7 for most of my work. This set-up efficiently covers most office scanning needs. The only issue I have is the “stitch” function, which is designed to combine two letter-sized scans into a ledger-sized image. I routinely need to scan legal (8.5” x 14”) documents and the “stitch” function is cumbersome for this purpose – producing far less than accurate scans. Here’s where a “pass through” document scanner like the Epson DA-30 really shines. Functionality = 8/10.
Check the reviews if you plan to use with Windows 10. For my needs – which I admit are unusual – this scanner has worked out pretty well, especially for the price. If the “stitch” function accommodated top-to-bottom scanning, I’d have given the LiDE220 scanner 5 stars.
Top reviews from other countries
The soft that comes up with it is quite intuitive and allows to scan with a bigger output which is perfect if your illustration is A5 and you want to make an A4 print for instance!
I highly recommend.
