It's hard to rate this highly based on my experience so far - I mean I'm sure my review would be more useful if I could report on whether or not this combo can hold up to a theft attempt. But just based on the appearance of quality of the U-Lock I can tell that thieves would have a very very difficult time getting through this thing. I had some problems installing the mount at first - the parts of the frame I wanted to mount it to were too skinny. However, once I eventually pulled my head out of my behind and realized what the little plastic square and cylinder pieces were intended for, I got it mounted perfectly and it hasn't budged. The keys are a little bit temperamental at times, but they are OK overall.
Again, I can't tell you with certainty how this duo will work during an attempted theft, but it is a high quality set and I really believe that it will keep my bike from getting stolen.
So far, I'm impressed with the quality of the u-lock and cable. The "U" portion of the lock feels very heavy-duty and has a nice matte rubber coating. The lock portion also feels very heavy and has a nice appearance. I would like to have seen the lock portion coated in the same material as the "U" portion because the plastic does feel slightly cheap. (This is more of a casual observation rather than an actual judgement of the quality of the plastic.)
The cable also feels heavy and well constructed with a thick rubber coating over the cable. It is the perfect link for securing the front wheel while the U-luck is securing the rear portion of the frame.
The keys are also high in quality and appearance.
The main reason for the one-star deduction is the plastic lock mount. The plastic used in the mount feels lighter than it should be for this application. The lock has a fair amount of weight to it and tends to slip in the mount and wants to end up in a completely vertical position. I would tighten the nut further but I'm afraid the plastic may crack or break. This mount would work fine if your back has plenty of round tubing to mount it on. I have a mountain bike with limited round tubing so I'm forced to mount it on the seat tube. While slightly annoying, this complaint with the mount is not a deal breaker. It generally accomplishes its purpose and I'm sure with some more experimentation I can find a mounting position that works.
Overall, a well made lock for a very competitive price. I would imagine that this item is very comparable to more expensive items offered by "big-name" brands such as Kryptonite. As many posts have explained before, a truly motivated and well equipped thief can likely cut through any lock that you purchase. I feel that I'm receiving an acceptable amount of protection while also saving some money with this Cocoweb lock. I've only owned it for about a month and therefore haven't experienced any theft attempts yet, but will updated this post if I do.
I was a bit rough with the lock at first, just hanging it from my handlebars where it'd smack against my handlebar stem as I rode. I prefer this to the included mount so I can remove the lock more quickly (I'm impatient and the mount isn't the fastest thing to use), and because I couldn't find a place to mount the lock where it'd be out of the way and easily accessible. I've since wrapped my stem in foam so the lock internals don't get shock damage.
The coating on the lock has held up decently well - it's got two small nicks from when I locked it against a very corroded metal pole that had sharp spots and rust flakes coming off of it.
I can't find a bad thing to say about this lock, other than I wish it was slightly longer to accommodate for more crowded and poorly designed bike racks. The included cable is good for this - but usually I don't bother (and want a bit more security) so I just ride around till I find a solid metal pole to mount my bike to (after trying to lift the pole out, to make sure it's not fake). Would buy again!
