First, the system is simple and sturdy (well, kind of). It is not a hulking box but a very small little system, quiet, clean looking, and sturdy. However, the "controller," that comes with the system is big...bigger than any console controller in modern history and I thought I would hate it. I don't. It is a weird hybrid of tablet, controller, and personal gaming system and in my opinion it works. It is sturdy in the hands and it is actually quite comfortable to hold.
The online element of the platform is not Xbox...not even close so don't expect that. It is a simple place to buy some classic games, get some of the newer releases, maybe chat with a 12 year old (don't know never tried) and I guess if you don't have an Xbox or a smart TV, you can use it to stream Netflix. But...let's be real. Nintendo is still around because of brand identity. The Mario and DK games are the reason I bought the Wii U and for that I am thrilled. Mario 3D, Mario Cart, New Super Mario Wii U, Zelda, Kirby...they are awesome. And because you can only get it on Nintendo, it makes me keep a little clear space in my budget and on my TV stand for whatever system Nintendo puts out every several years.
And now another note about why I really like this system. With the hype on PS and Xbox, there is some form of competition. In my opinion XB is superior but PS is a fine system. I get tired of playing for achievements and trophies and I get very tired of hearing people arguing why one of the "super," systems is better than the other. In my opinion one does not have to be bad for another to be good. The Wii U is simply a gaming system with fun in mind. They are not trying to convince you of anything. They are not trying to replace your cable box or jam 3000000p graphics down your throat. They are just saying, "hey, we have great characters and great...fun out of the box...games that you and your family can play." That is refreshing to me.
The Wii U sits proudly below my TV next to my XB1 and I am glad I have it. Would I choose it over XB1...absolutely not. But it has a place and I am very glad I bought it.
Oh, and Mario cart is awesome...:)
Setup was simple, the two games already installed on the hard drive. I also added an external 500gb hard drive to it. Super Mario Bros 3D is an excellent game! Sometimes even hard and challenging. I gave up on the Nintendo Land because the Control Pad kept losing connection with the Wii U.. Which I can't figure out, since I was less then 1 foot from the Wii U.
All in all the system had a good feel to it, everything worked and looked great. Graphics were good, and it was nice finally playing a Nintendo game in HD.
The only thing I would have to warn, is on the eShop. Watch what you buy, because some of it, just isn't worth the $4.99 or more. Example: I bought Donkey Kong Country, the graphics are HORID, doesn't look anything like the SNES version at all, the game is full of pixelation and LAG!
Well, as I said, it's worth the $291.99 and I've already ordered more games and accessories for it! I am now off to go PLAY my WII U!
I love the touch screen - using just a joystick and buttons to type was something I was dreading but this works more like a tablet. And the touch sensitivity is wonderful. It makes navigating menus really easy. Just watch out, the controller even when fully charged won't last more than about 3 - 4 hours. You can keep it plugged in if you play for long periods like I sometimes do.
The games it comes with are fun though I moved on to other games. I like the Wii Sports and, to an extend the Wii Fit U (though this last game can be quite insulting and demoralizing if you have image issues about your weight). Right now I probably play a little too much of the Castle Siege game which is simple but a lot of fun.
As for the controller (joysticks and buttons), they work pretty well for this novice of such controllers. My brother-in-law who is used to the X-Box had a little difficulty because the buttons are in a different order but managed pretty well after a little practice.
I was disappointed it did not come with Wii Remote controllers. I guess they assume most people who purchase the Wii U already have a Wii. But a quick trip to the local game store solved that. I recommend 2 of the Wii U Remote Plus controllers with the Nun Chuck. If you shop around or haggle with your local store you can probably find a good deal on them. I got the name brand because the off brands often had negative reviews about how reliable they were.
In all I got what I was after: a console that is considerably less expensive than a new gaming PC which I can use to play online with a friend while also playing games that get me some exercise.
Top reviews from other countries
Graphics: I've got a fairly powerful gaming PC and I can play most games on High or Ultra High settings at 60 frames per second. Despite being the least powerful of the next-gen (technically current-gen) consoles, the Wii U seems to have no issues running games at 60fps when the games demand it. Super Smash Bros runs at a beautiful 1080p 60fps and is the best looking fighting game I've ever seen, PC or console.
Controllers: The GamePad is surprisingly comfortable, and I can't ever imagine playing a Zelda game again without being able to use the GamePad's screen to equip items or view the map. The Wii U Pro controller is a worthy addition if you prefer a more traditional controller, and the Wiimote works with quite a few games if you happen to be a masochist.
Games: Unlike other 'next-gen' consoles, the Wii U has games that are actually finished and bug free. Micro-transactions and day one DLC are also absent.
