Fyi: Since this is my first canister filter and my tank is so heavily planted, I've realized that I have to lift the spray bar at night to create surface agitation to oxygenate the water. I've known that the plants use oxygen an night but never had an issue with this because I've previously only had sponge filters. This is not a negative for the filter, just a heads up. The water looks pristine, fish are happy, I'm pleased with this filter. I recommend it and would purchase again.
Unboxing, the canister has all the necessary parts. Canister, 3 baskets, ceramic media, bio ball media, floss, carbon. Nice touch, the ceramic and carbon came in zippered reusable bags. UV light and light cover, intake and outtake hoses (green), intake tube with 2 extenders, outtake with two spray bars or nozzle. The plastic (IMO) seems a little flimsy, but not unexpected for the price.
Installation instructions could be better. It suffers somewhat from the translation issue, but the pictures aren't too bad. I've also put a canister filter together in the past, so have some knowledge.
1. The UV light didn't have any warning about not touching it. The oil on your fingers is generally bad news for these lights. Installing the bulb was fairly straightforward. I would recommend using a paper towel or something to grip the light during installation.
2. The UV light cover was a little tricky. I didn't quite know how to put it on, but looking at the pictures with the instructions helped. I thought the quartz glass cover just pushed on, but I had to unscrew a plate and install the quartz cover through the plate and then reattach the plate. The written instructions were no help.
3. I rinsed the carbon media before using. This is always recommended.
4. The hoses and all the attachments seemed to fit well. I'm not a fan of the green hose, but to each their own. I used the nozzle as my fish are more river fish and probably appreciate the water movement. I didn't use any of the extenders for the intake valve as they made the intake too long. Each extender adds about 10 cm (4 inches).
5. I didn't cut either intake or outflow hose. This made priming the pump a little more effort. I did fill the canister with about a gallon and a half of water before priming. I'm hoping that I won't need to really prime again when servicing the filter and that the water pressure in the hoses will be sufficient.
6. The canister has little rubber feet on the bottom. This probably helps somewhat with noise, but it means that you can't really slide the canister. I slid the canister, and the feet popped right out. Not a big deal, as I popped them right back in.
7. No leaks. The o-ring already seemed to have a little big of lubrication, so I didn't put any additional lubrication.
Surprises:
IMO, the biggest surprise was how quiet the pump is. This canister replaced a hang-of-the-back filter, and it is stored inside the supporting cabinet. Even so, this canister is so quiet, that I have to check the water flow to see if it's on. With the cabinet open and my cellphone (which has a dB measurement tool, I measured about 5 dB of noise at a distance of less than a foot.
I wish the outflow setup allowed a 90-degree turn. Right now, it's pointed at the front of the aquarium. To point it along the long-side of the aquarium would require me to mount the outflow on the side instead of the back. This puts the hoses in plain view, so I decided that the forward facing flow was a better option.
Time will tell if it was a good purchase. The noise level is fair so I placed a dense foam pad under canister to reduce noise level. Output is strong but would have like better selection of filter media with unit. No bio-balls or carbon medium came with unit just four white filter pads.
Hope I got more then I paid for.
