Nevertheless, the bag was still in fantastic condition and technically usable. As such, when Amazon suggested this product to me, I was more torn than most people on whether it would be a worthwhile purchase – especially considering the rather steep price. Although I have used it for only a week now, I have to say that I feel like it was an excellent investment.
PROS
- Excellent build quality
- Thoughtful design
- Sleek appearance
The first thing I noticed when I saw the backpack was how sturdy it looked. Unlike most backpacks, this one will stand up on its own rather than slump over when placed on the ground. This is due to the hard plastic case at the bottom of the bag – accessible from its front – where one can store a laptop’s power brick separately from everything else. The zipper quality was similarly impressive. When doing and undoing the zipper, it has a solid, deep sound that one can be assured will never tear or open accidentally as you walk down the street. The material feels robust and resistant to tears or scuffs. The backpack also has a Teflon coat, which makes it fine for brief walks through light rain.
As I opened the various compartments, I also appreciated the bag’s design. The laptop and document compartments use L-shaped zippers that go from the top and zip all the way down to the bottom of the right side. This makes putting in and removing laptops, papers, and whatnot much easier. I no longer have to worry about scraping the cover of my laptop against a metal zipper or accidentally crumpling documents. If I need extra space to do so, I can just spread the section a little more. The tablet compartment is also an excellent addition, just big enough to hold comfortably my Surface 2 tablet. I am pleased that they did not limit this pocket to hold just iPads. The laptop pocket comes with removable padding at the bottom to protect the bag from modest drops. I feel like it could hold a 17-inch laptop without problems, though I have not tried this.
There was no neglect of the front pockets. The main front pocket has spaces for all my pens, pencils, and highlighters as well as smaller netted pockets for the other things I usually use like gum, a calculator, and cough drops. The frontmost pocket is great for holding thin documents, such as passports or tickets. The bottommost compartment has a hard plastic shell that is meant for power bricks or other more delicate, if somewhat small, electronics that need extra care like computer mice. There is also a side pocket for beverages, which can be zipped up when not in use, but I will comment on that later.
I also appreciate the bright orange material used to line the interior pockets. The contrast with the black makes it easy to find what one needs, especially in low light and with small objects like flash drives. It is a subtle feature, but I never realized how much time I spent looking for my flash drive in my old backpack with a black interior until I pulled it out of this bag with barely a glance. The bag also has slits on the back behind the padding to allow it to slide down the handle of a suitcase. This is excellent if you are traveling on a plane, though I doubt that I will use this particular feature at all.
As a side note, I typically use the document pocket – with the hard case as its base – to hold a large metal thermos of coffee and my small lunch. It does so comfortably and with minimal crushing of my food, which was a big annoyance with my previous backpack. That should also give you a sense of how large it can be if you need it to hold textbooks or an armful of folders.
Though I generally prefer function to form, the bag’s design is sleek. It feels like something that belongs in an office; it would not look out of place next to a briefcase at a meeting. The branding is minimal and subtle, with no dramatic coloring to attract attention to the manufacturer. The bag can grow to be about as big as you need it to be, but it can also be surprisingly slim. You probably will still feel the jostling of others on a crowded subway car, but it will fit comfortably on your lap if you manage to find a seat. When you need to make your way to the subway doors to get off, you can throw it on your shoulder or use one of the straps on the bag’s top or side to hold it in your hand and make a beeline.
CONS
- Beverage holder could be improved
One thing that disappoints me is the lone side pocket. It zips away when not in use to make the bag more streamline, but I feel like it was a somewhat neglected feature. The netting and elastic is adequate for a can of soda or typical-sized bottle of water, but I would have hesitations about putting anything taller or heavier in there. Personally, I always use the side pocket to hold an umbrella. It puts the umbrella within easy reach and keeps it away from everything else when it gets wet. However, the size of the pocket makes me concerned about my umbrella falling out. If the pocket were just a bit taller, I would have no problem keeping my umbrella in there. As it is now, though, I guess I will have to keep it somewhere else. Someone else’s experience with this pocket may differ.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
- Weight
- Price
I know it is impossible to have a backpack that is both sturdy and light as a dust mote, but I think weight is something people should keep in mind. Although the backpack straps are well made and distribute the bag’s weight effectively, the bag definitely has a certain degree of heft even when somewhat empty. Adding a laptop and the usual accessories is bearable, but I would be somewhat wary of loading it up with everything in and on your office desk and then walking across town.
A bag of this quality – and at this price – is definitely an investment one should make only if the bag will be often used or hold especially delicate or expensive electronics. I think it might be overkill for the rare meeting a few blocks away or for the K-12 student who carries little more than loose-leaf paper and pencils. Even I feel like the bag is a little on the pricey side, despite almost daily need for a backpack. Still, I do not quite think that this is something that should count against the product. It is great - for the right audience.
Overall, I would recommend the bag to anyone who wants a sturdy, thoughtfully designed, and aesthetically pleasing backpack to carry things safely and conveniently in an office or college setting. I am sure that this bag will see even more use than my previous backpack from Case Logic and last just as long. I will update my review if anything changes or if I can think of any other comments.
UPDATE – 6/24/15
I took this bag with me on a trip to Hawaii from the East Coast. It carried my laptop, Surface 2, computer and phone chargers, and a wireless mouse without any problems. I moved through security like a breeze thanks to the generous pockets and never once felt concerned about damaging my electronics. I am somewhat disappointed that the paint on the zipper pulls chipped while keeping it under the seat, but this is a minor complaint.
A few days ago, I also walked through a ferocious downpour on my way home. I thought my umbrella kept most of it away, but it turned out that the outermost portion of the bag was unprotected. I assumed that it had completely soaked through the pockets, but the bag actually kept most of it away. It was damp, sure, but otherwise fine. I think I might give the bag a coating of Scotchgard just to be safe, but this bag can handle more than a light sprinkle.
UPDATE – 10/28/15
I recently upgraded my Surface 2 to the Surface Pro 4 and it no longer fits in the tablet pocket. I have to keep it in the laptop compartment, but it does not change my opinion of the bag. I just wanted to give readers some perspective as to how big of a tablet or notebook they could keep in the tablet compartment. Bag is still holding up well!
UPDATE - 6/3/17
I am happy to report that I am still using the bag and it is holding up very well. No scuffs, tears, or loose seams!
UPDATE - 12/1/19
The bag continues to be in good shape, but is showing some slight signs of wear. A few of the seams are beginning to fray ever so slightly, but this is a cosmetic issue.
PROS
- Excellent build quality
- Lots of organizing pockets
- Some unique features that others do not have
- LIFETIME warranty!
CONS
- Size and Weight
- Wimpy Side Pocket
- NOT TSA-friendly (laptop must be removed for scanning)
- Noise (Noise? I'll explain below.)
There are plenty of video reviews of this bag on YouTube, not to mention lots of general photos on Amazon and on the eBags site. So I suggest you check out some of those sources for a very generic look at this bag. But here are some details on specific strengths and weaknesses that I have experienced:
* OUTSTANDING QUALITY AND WARRANTY
I own a lot of eBags brand products - suitcases, packing cubes, lunch boxes, toiletry kit, and so on. Like all of the eBags brand products, the materials are really high quality (ballistic nylon shell with water resistance, YKK self-healing zippers, rip and tear resistant nylon lining in bright orange that makes it impossible to lose anything inside the bag), and well thought out organization that tells me that real travelers were part of designing this bag. eBags gives a LIFETIME warranty on their products, which I have had to test ONCE. In that case, they sent me a replacement bag as an advance shipment...TO MY HOTEL! I put the broken bag in a return box and dropped it off at the business center. THAT'S customer service.
* CLEVER ORGANIZING FEATURES
The front U-shaped organizing area unzips all around and makes it easy to get to items when the bag is used either vertically like a backpack, or horizontally like a briefcase. Most pockets in this area are mesh with zippers, which keeps items from shifting or falling out when you open the pockets from different bag orientations. (see my first picture to see the bag standing on its own)
The nicely padded laptop compartment is generous and could EASILY accommodate the largest 17" laptops I've ever seen. In my case, I am able to get a 15" laptop, external USB monitor, and a flat, folding laptop stand all in this one compartment! (see my second picture)
The "main" compartment of the backpack has a slim divider along the back to help keep papers or a pad laying flat. The rest of the compartment is open space to use as you wish. I travel with LOTS of cables and adapters, so I purchased the BAGSMART 3-Layer Travel Electronics Cable Organizer on Amazon. (I tried many different cable organizers and this is one of the few times that an eBags' product didn't QUITE meet my needs...but I have a LOT of cables and adapters so YMMV.) (see my third picture)
The "cable garage" is a special pocket that spans the full width of the pack along the bottom, front. It is actually a zippered compartment designed to hold the included hard-sided, zippered case. (see my fourth picture) For typical, everyday business uses, this is probably sufficient to hold a power adapter, mouse, and perhaps an umbrella, international plug adapter, or a few other small goodies. You may also remove the hard-side case, detach the velcro "roof" of this compartment and fold it down, and thus create a main compartment to the backpack that spans the full height of the bag. (But keep in mind if you do this the bag loses its ability to stand on its own, which may or may not matter to you.)
* ONE (OR TWO) NOT-SO-CLEVER FEATURE(S)
The laptop and main compartments use L-shaped zippers that go across the top and one full side of the bag. This makes them very accessible without risking anything falling out. BUT...if you don't have TSA Pre, TSA Global Entry, or CLEAR, this means you'll have to remove your laptop for separate scanning. Many frequent travelers I know have one of these (including me), but if not, this is a potential annoyance.
One impact of the L-shaped zippered compartments that affects everyone, however, is that they leave only one side of the bag free for additional zippered pockets - notably, the ubiquitous "water bottle pocket". The one sad and unresolvable issue you must lendure with this bag is that the water bottle pocket is very small and has very limited elastic expandability. (see my fifth picture) It will hold a small water bottle, but not a large one for a long flight. It will hold a 16-20 ounce insulated mug (I found a nice one at Wawa that works) but it won't hold the 30 oz. YETI Rambler mug I use at home. And there's no separate waterproof pocket for a mini umbrella like I have had in a couple of previous bags. This is such a glaring problem that I am almost certain eBags will fix it in a future version of this bag...and I am glad I get frequent coupons from them so I can buy it at a discount if/when they do! :-)
* SIZE, WEIGHT AND NOISE
This is a fairly big bag at 18" x 12.75" x 8.5" and nearly 4 pounds (sorry to my international friends for not using metric measurements). If you are a smaller man or woman who finds the size of the bag to be awkward, or who is more sensitive to how much it weighs, you may want to check out their Junior version of the same bag (I actually looked at one of them also and it wasn't big enough for MY needs, but, as always, YMMV). There are also ways you can get rid of some weight that I learned about surfing the reviews on YouTube. These include: get rid of the hard case from the cable garage, remove the plastic inserts from the interior walls of the bag, and clip off the many metal zipper pulls (more about that in a moment). One reviewer said he got the bag down under 3 pounds by doing all of these. I'm of slightly above average height and weight, so the size and weight were not as much of an issue for me, and I like that the bag is somewhat rigid and can stand on its own when loaded.
One factor many people do not think about with a business bag is noise. I find frequently that I am walking quickly through airports, convention centers, and even office buildings. Sometimes I am "sneaking" in late to, or out early from, a meeting room. There are NINE external zipper pulls on this bag, some of which are kind of bulky and heavy-duty. As you move around wearing the pack - especially if you are moving quickly, you can sound kind of like the Ghost of Christmas Past clanking around with all of your chains! But thanks to some YouTube research (again), I found a solution using DIY zipper pulls made from paracord and heat-shrink tubing. So I was able to clip off the zipper pulls on the outside of the bag (and on my BAGSMART cable organizer) and render it almost totally SILENT with paracord pulls. (see my sixth picture) I chose to use bright orange paracord that is easy to see and matches the interior of the bag, but you could certainly use a more sedate color if you are concerned about maintaining the dark, professional look of the bag.
* SUMMARY
Overall, this is a nearly perfect bag if you are willing to take a few steps to "make it your own". The quality rivals bags I have owned that cost two or even three times as much, and I can speak from firsthand experience about how eBags stands by their products. If they come out with a new version that has a better-designed water bottle pocket, and perhaps an umbrella pocket right above it, I think that would take this bag from a solid 4.5 to a 5.0 in my book! But even as it is, this is a GREAT everyday business bag - highly recommended.

I spent a ridiculous amount of time looking for a good bag and this really is it. It’s perfect as a ‘business day bag’ - looks good in black; straps can be tucked away; laptop seems well protected; and there’s a really nice set of small organising pockets in the front plus specific sections for tablet, notes, charger etc.
Personally I ditched the hard case insert for day-to-day use and have a uk/eu/us plug converter and laptop power supply in the bottom section (great to get out fast without embarrassing myself with all my tat flying out); likewise I have my headphones in the flocked tablet pocket so I always know where they are and they don’t get scratched.
The only downside is that it is slightly too small for a comfortable overnighter. I found I can get 2 shirts and undercrackers in the bag if I use one of the compression bags I bought, so just about ok but not perfect. I like adding a compression bag as well because again it means stuff doesn’t fly everywhere if you need to get into a section quickly. You cannot, however, fit anything extra for a gym visit: shoes etc ain’t gonna fit. It’s the price you pay for a slim, professional-looking bag- and it’s really designed to accompany a small suitcase for that kind of trip.
All in all, no regrets buying this bag, although I am contemplating a larger one for some mid-length trips.
It's an ideal size for work. Fits a big 15" laptop, another smaller laptop , A4 notebook etc in the back pocket, and similar ish space in the next main pocket.
Tablet pocket between the two is good.
Front bit that opens has lots of great varied sized storage for all the smaller things.
The "hard" storage at the bottom takes the power cords and other cables.
So as a work bag, it's great.
Comfortable, looks smart, fits over the handles on rolling luggage.
Good size for the "smaller" carry on for flights. (rolling suitcase as the main, this as the secondary, had no issues with it being deemed too big)
It's probably not big enough as a work AND a weekend bag.
Get the next size up for that.
Well, if you didnt have too much work stuff and just wanted a T shirt and a few minor bits in the 2nd main pocket, then ok I suppose, but you know what i mean. One or the other really.
I'd guess then as a guide, it would probably hold about 6 ish 15" laptops across the 2 main pockets and be full ish but not overly stuffed.
May take a 17" in teh back, there is good space around the edge of the big 15, but measure up first.
So again, travel suitcase and work, , maybe not, but work bag for good amount of well organised work stuff and looks really smart, it's bang on.
I had a Timbuk2 bag before this, the main zip failed, the return policy was a waste of time, this one seems much better.
And its zips bigger, more robust and designed to be self protecting against rubbing and wear.
Appreciate its not cheap and kind of an unknown brand in a market of hundreds of bags, but so far, worth the money and if it went missing I'd get it again.
