Features

Wireless Router

1 GHz Dual-Core CPU for Powerful Processing

At the heart of the Archer C9 is a 1 GHz dual-core processor that balances the demands of your devices to keep their connections fast and uninterrupted.

Game online, stream movies, download files and share media while the powerful dual-core processor seamlessly manages each Wi-Fi band, every connection and all of the router’s hardware and software.

Excellent router. Amazing flexibility, adjustable power levels and support for 2.4 and 5ghz along with guest networking.
    5 out of 5 stars
Excellent router. Amazing flexibility, adjustable power levels and support for 2.4 and 5ghz along with guest networking.
Quite simply the best router I have ever purchased. I liked mine so much, I bought a spare to have on-hand when the first one gives up the ghost. There is so much to this router that I don't know how else to review it other than to go over what functions I like and use. For one, the router does have a basic and advanced mode. I tend to get into the more advanced functionality for my home network and this router offers all the right bells and whistles. The guest-user feature, allowing guests at your home or business to use the router while not having access to local LAN resources is *really* nice. And the dual 2.4 and 5 ghz support is just great. I also loved the address reservation so that certain devices hold onto an IP address permanently, it is a feature often seen in the workplace for computers that require a reserved address and is so nice to see on a device that operates in the consumer space. One other feature I liked was the ability to reduce the transmit power level for this router. I never had this on past routers and having the ability to put less stress on the transmitter was a nice add-on feature. I currently have mine set to middle and it works great for my needs. Your mileage may vary in your situation, so test these settings for power carefully before finalizing your router to a particular setting. The other big win for this TP-Link router is the add-on USB drive capability. I use it extensively and it is an extremely nice feature for interchange of data on your local network. Another feature that really is well done is the scheduling capability. It is very well executed and is specific to both the 2.4 and 5 ghz network settings for regular use and also specific settings for the guest network. I have tested it out and it does work well in both cases, but the menus are different for the permanent user and is a rules-based menu that can be tweaked for all manner of schedules while the guest network schedule menus are a little more static. All in all, a great execution and I can't complain about any of these features. There is so much more to this router that I can't really cover it all in the review, but I can say that I've had my first one for over a year now and it has performed extremely well. The form factor is great and the look of the device definitely has that "sci-fi" look about it. It boots up pretty fast and the status lights on the front are extremely easy to understand. I think the vertical orientation of the router is also a good idea as it likely enhances the cooling of the router with more surface area for air to reach to keep it cool (my guess only - correct me if I am wrong). The overall menu for controlling and setting the router up is extremely easy to understand and it works well with most browsers. I like the easy access "reboot" link for when I'm making changes to the router. Very fast reboot.Bottom line: This is a truly excellent router. I used another brand of router before and was buying a new one every year like clockwork. I've been running this one for over a year now and not a hiccup or issue. It plays well with my other network devices, is easy to configure and has an excellent form factor and is reliable. As long as TP-Link keeps hitting home runs with routers like this, I'll keep buying them.

I bought this router because I was researching what the best home routers are. This one came up as a possibility. My requirements are that the router never needs to be rebooted, and run all my various electronic wireless “clients” as the industry refers to them.

Buying a new router can be difficult due to all the advertising hype the manufacturers put out and the extreme details that testers go to in order to separate one router from another. The manufacturers try to convince us that we need router features that none of the “clients” (home electronic devices) are capable of using. The idea is that we need to “Future Proof” by buying now what may become available in another year or two. One manufacturer recently put out quite an ad explaining how sad it is that most people still have a wireless n router in the age of wireless ac. The fact that most people do not have wireless ac was not mentioned.

The problem with buying what the clients cannot use is that routers seem to fail after a few years of use. Or if the entire router does not fail, it is common for one of the bands to fail. Instead of having both a 2.4g and a 5.0g you end up with just one of them working. So buying a $250 to $300 router now to take advantage of something in a few years really does not make sense. Also it mean purchasing all new and the latest and greats laptops, phones, and tablets in order to use these new features. Most of us purchase new items one at a time and not all at once. We gradually move into it over a period of years. There are many wireless g devices out there and they still work great. And many hotspots in your local town are using wireless g routers because they are cheap to buy and still work great in physically small spaces. Don’t get me wrong, I very much support moving up from old wireless g routers. Especially if you have newer devices in your home. Ac has great speed and the beamforming technology is really nice.

So how does the TP-Link fit into all of this? As a home user (actually I run my business out of my home also) I wanted 100% up time and I wanted something to run all my 8 to 10 wireless devices with no issues. My experience has been that most routers that are going to fail or constantly reboot do it pretty much from the beginning. This router replaced a Cisco Linksys E3000 that has worked great for 4.5 years. I really did not need to replace it but I had reached the point of 3 wireless ac devices with a fourth coming so decided to do so.

The TP-Link has great range. I have the router upstairs 70 feet from my bedroom which is downstairs. The signal goes through two walls and a roof at a strong slant in order to get to the far reaches of the bedroom. I placed my Samsung S5 (wireless ac) an iPad 2 (wireless ac) a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (wireless ac) a 4.5 year old Lenovo laptop (wireless n) a LG 10 inch tablet (wireless n) and a 5 to six year old Mac (wireless g) all in the room. I lined them up and played YouTube videos on all of them at the same time. Everything played flawlessly with no skips, jumps or hesitation. So, that kind of performance with no downtime so far is a much as most of us will need. All of the other tweaks and IT guy stuff that the testers talk about will not impact most home users. We just want something with good range that works all the time. This router accomplishes that. Two to three years from now when electronic devises have all the wiz bang stuff and I start buying those devices, then I will buy the routers that will support it. In the meantime this router will fulfill the needs of most home users and do it well at a reasonable cost.

UPDATE AS OF JUNE 29. The router has been up for several weeks now without a single hiccup. It is working great. My speeds in the house run around 150 Mbps for wireless N and around 450 Mbps to 600 Mbps for my wireless AC devices. HOWEVER, remember that these high speeds are meaningless if your internet connection is slower. Your fastest speed can never exceed what your internet service provider gives you. So if you have internet service that is 10 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up then the high speeds recorded on your devices are meaningless. They only will benefit you if you have an internal system where maybe you have all your movies and music stored on an internal drive and you access that from your wireless devices. Then the high router speeds work. But when you connect to the internet you can never get more than what your provider gives you and if you have multiple devices connecting then that number gets divided up even more. So those with slow DSL or low end cable modem are not benefiting from a fast router. Those who have 300 down and 20 up from a fast cable modem can receive some benefit. But you will never get more than that cable modem offers. So do not get too enthralled with the fast router speeds. They may be of little or no benefit to you. But they make for great advertising for the router makers.

Probably the best router on the market right now if you ask me. I spent about a week researching every different router/brand possible, and ended up with this one. I read through countless amounts of reviews, reports, tests, etc. and TP Link Archer tops them all!

I am a tech related major, and have been setting up/fixing electronics and network devices for years. I guarantee you, that this router is the best bang for the buck. Only at $130, you get the best WiFi range, best speeds, strong signals, and the TP-Link configuration panel is great to use. It is great looking, durably built, and a high quality product. I couldn't believe it was at the price it is at.

      NOTE:
1.) Make sure on all routers that you set it up using WPA2 - Personal, with a decent password using lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and at least one symbol such as: @ or ! or & etc. If you only run through the basic setup, setup a password, and don't dip into the Advanced Settings, the Archer C9 will use WPA2-Personal by default.
2.) If you are using WiFi devices around the house, some such as BluRay players will only support the 2.4GHz band, while other devices will support the 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The 5GHz band carries more clear frequencies, which in return you can get more stable/faster speeds. The 2.4GHz band can interfere with devices such as microwaves and radios etc. But in the down fall, 5GHz bands don't have as much range as the 2.4GHz. So if the wireless devices support the 5GHz band, and it has a strong signal to it, use 5GHz. If not, 2.4GHz will work perfectly fine.
3,) Change the SSID Broadcast Name (WiFi name) to something personalized. Don't keep it set to TP-LINK 2703434 or whatever. If someone is attempting to hack into your network, and they already know the Router Brand, this just makes it easier for them as each different router brand has its own security flaws. Change it to something such as AB WiFi (inititals + WiFi), or G&R Wireless (Greg & Rhonda Wireless), or even Abraham Linksys! (lol).
4.) If you have an extremely large home and this doesn't reach every corner of the house with WiFi like you need it to, look into purchasing a TP-Link Wireless Range Extender (that supports 2.4GHz and 5GHz). They just plug into an outlet, and make your WiFi go even further!

At the end of the day, this is a great router that will work great for larger homes, provide easy setup, fast speeds, and strong and secure connection for just $130.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excelente

It seems I was given, either a used device, or an old stock. The router has scratch marks all over it!

      Also, the firmware is strange!

Tutto bene, prodotto valido.

The item is very easy to install through it's installation wizard, then go through the advanced settings if you are a techie to tweak all the settings. I like having a guest wifi network kept separate from my internal one. I had problems when I switched on DoS protection to high - it started blocking my internal devices. I had to set it to low to get it working fine. Overall it is an excellent router and very fast both wired and wireless.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very satisfied with a great router
Reviewed in Canada on March 9, 2017
I've had this router for just a bit over a year now and this is probably the best router I've ever owned in 25+ years of being online. The admin dashboard is a pleasure to use and it's very easy to configure settings. The wi-fi signal output is strong and has a great range. This device replaced on older d-link model and the signal strength and range is about 30-40% stronger compared to the old router, and the dual band option is great for if there's a lot of interference in your area. There are probably 8-10 devices in my household connected to it at any given time and there is no lag or performance issues even when someone's streaming HD and/or downloading over our 120Mb cable connection. All this in a well-designed package, the router itself looks very elegant and its clean lines and classy product design blends in nicely with the decor. It feels sturdy and well constructed. The only issue I've had with it so far is that if it's rebooted/powered on, it doesn't detect the WAN connection until I remove the cable to the modem and re-insert it, at which point it detects the connection almost instantly (light goes from yellow to green). This might have more to do with the cable modem, I haven't taken the time to troubleshoot because it's such a rare occurrence.
