What a pleasant surprise. After a minor glitch (my fault, explained below) I found this lens will give me crisp clear focus and colors. It is an excellent lens for those who cannot afford the top of the line lenses that will last forever but take forever to pay for.
This lens is good for probably a year of continual medium to heavy use and then just throw it away and buy another. It is made of plastic and needs tender loving care to hold up for any amount of time but I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of photos you can get from this. If you have a limited budget and need a lens that will get you those low light photos then buy this. Yopu won't be disappointed. Just be careful on banging it around.
Now a little help and the "glitch" I mentioned. When this was delivered I handed the box to an associate and went to a meeting. I got a call that the lens was horrible and the best focus was slightly blurry with a halo around everything. My initial reaction was that "You get what you pay for". Upon my return to the studio I grabbed the lens and put it on a different body and got the same result. It looked like I was shooting through a thin film of Vaseline. Upon closer inspection I found that my associate had removed the protective plastic sheet from the front glass of the lens but not the small one on the back glass. (think of the plastic on the front of a new phone) If you remove both piece of plastic you should get some pretty good photos.
The quality of photos you will get for a mid-$50 lens will quickly put your mind to rest. Seriously. I could really care less that the lens is "lesser quailty built" than the Canon version. I do not purposely endanger my equipment because I need it and I do not have a backup. This is not a pro lens and I would expect that for $50 there has to be more plastic than metal. If anything, to me, this is a starter lens to evaluate what one can produce with this focal length and evaluate if you want to get the better built one from Canon. When you put this lens on, you probably will be like me and leave it on a majority of the time because it is a great walk-around lens and also delivers awesome portrait shots.
The only problem I ever had was one time it would not auto-focus shortly after my purchase. Not sure what happened, but I removed it carefully, slid the switch for manual/auto a few times, re-mounted it and it was fine. It hasn't happened since.
Also, it's a prime lens so you will have to make the mental change that there is not a zoom capability in the lens and you must physically get closer to subjects, or move further away. Some people may not understand this at first, or may not be able to physically move. So if you are looking for a zoom built-in, this lens does not offer that capability.
Finally, make sure you remove all clear plastic lens covers before you begin to use the lens! The plastic on the internal side was a bit of a hassle to remove with larger fingers in action and I almost did not see it on the glass at first.
Hope my words helped you and maybe even persuaded you to get off the fence and just buy it. I am very happy with mine and it's been on my camera almost exclusively for 5 months now.

Overall, very happy with this purchase.
The only disappointment is the speed of the auto focus, it's quite slow, fine for most portraits and landscapes but it struggles to keep up with any action shots.
Overall great value.
