Had one intermittent bar, now 3-4 bars!

Had one intermittent bar, now 3-4 bars!
I have a place in the middle of the woods in Pa. I can get 1 bar (Verizon) most of the time only when the phone is flat on the front porch railing. I bought this unit because of the 30 day return policy. I set it up on my utility pole 30 feet in the air, put it on pvc pipe with a 90 degree at the top so I can change the direction of the antenna by turning the antenna/support by hand from the ground. After a little fiddling (I also bought a signal meter, which told me nothing, so I returned it) I was able to get the inside antenna to give me 3-4 bars. Enough to work my laptop on the internet while being connected to my phone via the hotspot feature. Verizon unlimited plans give you 15gb of hotspot every month so now if I need to look something up or make a purchase I can easily. I would recommend this product, pretty much plug and play as long as you follow the directions and keep the outside antenna and inside antenna the proper distance apart.

This product worked fantastically for me with my particular cell tower assignments which are 10-13miles to the east of my home across a body of water. I have almost line of sight since the signals cross Puget Sound. I don't get any competing cell tower sites from the west at all due to terrain and distance to the towers. My home is in a rural area with poor cellular coverage and poor wireline internet that goes out frequently and wanted to use my phone as WiFi hotspot when the wireline internet goes out - and to use for my security system as a backup in case burglars cut the internet service wires. I have one cell phone on Verizon and one on T-Mobile. We have poor reception for both systems with Verizon being generally better but calls are usually garbled/noisy and using. In terms of numbers of bars, we get 1 bar most times and 2 if we're lucky. The signal strength is usually around -112-115dBm (RSRP) with short burst as good as -91dBm. Data rates when using the phones in hotspot mode are poor. I bought an Android app called Signal Check Pro for both phones. This application provides the signal strength, the frequency band the tower uses...as well as the GCI number which is the identification number the cell base station sends to my phone as it communicates with it. The last two digits of this are the antenna number since a tower can have multiple transmitters/antennas. The rest of the digits are the eNodeB (eNB) number in hexadecimal. For example, one of the towers transmitted the GCI "0009C120"; 9C1 was the tower ID and 20 is the antenna number. You can convert the hexadecimal number (e.g. 9C1) to decimal using a free online hexadecimal to decimal converter. You can run Signal Check Pro and create a log of several hours and get a list of all the cell towers your phone has been assigned by the network and their signal strengths. I then found the location of the cell towers by using a web site called Cell Mapper which shows you a precise location on a map and I found both Verizon and TMobile tower sites listed. The bands used were bands 4, 12, and 13 for my two phones. Once I had locations of all the towers, I mounted my Weboost external antenna toward the best compromise position for the towers with the strongest signals and am now getting as high as -51dBm!!! I average -60-70dBm when I am near the antenna located in my home, but still get -80-90dBm over a decent portion of my home. I set my phone by the inside antenna when I use it as an internet WiFi hotspot and the data speeds have been unbelievable on Verizon...have seen up to 18Mbps download and a crazy 21Mbps upload speed...but upload is usually lower in the 5-10Mbps range. The speeds are consistently quite a bit higher than my wireline internet which rarely exceeds 8Mbps. There is even an excellent analysis of the antenna patterns of this Weboost repeater on a blog from the Orion Ranch Observatory so I knew how wide the Weboost's antenna beams were for the outside panel antenna tweaking the antenna position (about 60 degrees at 700MHz) and very wide at the higher band. I actually called the Weboost customer service team and they tried to provide me with information on the antenna patterns, but they weren't able to email me a graph or even tell me which set of specs in the user manual my Weboost kit met -- there are two versions with two FCC filing IDs and different specs. The Customer Service guy didn't seem to know that or understand it. He was very nice and seemed to have an "OK" level of knowledge of the product and it's installation. My questions were probably abnormally technical. I am extremely happy with the product, however. It works great for my scenario and I am ecstatic that I bought it.

Reviewed in the United States on August 9, 2016
The weBoost is magic. Like many others who have stated their skepticism, I, too, thought this device was too good to be true. I had recently moved, and my T-mobile service was lackluster at best in this rural area. I was only receiving 3-5 bars of Edge. I have always been a huge T-mobile fan, I mean 5gigs for $30, you can't beat it; unfortunately, Verizon is the master of the domain in my area, but I didn't want to give up on my old girl.

So here's the Stats and Setups and Suggestions:

I live on an upper plain. The nearest t-mobile towers are 5-7 miles away. The 5 mile away tower is on a hill, and I only received 312kbps download speeds when running tests. The 2nd tower is 7 miles away, in a town in a valley, and I often download between 16-22mbps when running speed tests.

So first things first, download two free apps a cell phone tower locator along with a cell signal stats app. Some apps do both.
When you are close to a town, and you are receiving 4g LTE run the cell tower locator. This will map and log the cell tower and allow you to make note of the direction to aim your weBoost antenna (granted, you can use the cell signal stats app in conjunction with trial and error to determine the best angle for cell signal strength; however, various towers gave me variable download speeds so I located the fastest mbps towers by running signal download/upload test with the apps).

Once I received the weBoost, I setup the external antenna inside on the second floor pointing towards the tower. To my surprise, I received 4 bars 4G LTE, and I had a signal strength of 104-106dB. This was enough signal to read internet articles, but not enough to load a youtube video without buffering.

Next I bought an aluminum 20ft. flag pole from a hardware store for $60. Go figure a popular auction site has 25 footers for $50. But anyways, I attached the outdoor antenna to the flag pole, and I placed the flag pole on the balcony. I estimate I have the antenna 30-35ft. in the air (Height is Important!!!). At this height, I am receiving 5 bars of 4g LTE with a signal strength that varies between 89dB to 96dB (88dB is good signal; 55dB is like standing at the tower site). I can normally stream Hulu and Netflix at these levels, but I cannot do much googling or amazoning at the same time without some video lag/buffering, but hey! this is amazing.

    The Bad:
weBoost is overstating the signal boost range of 1500 sq.ft. Your signal is boosted, but I have to run my phone as a hotspot b/c the phone must be within inches/even touching the indoor antenna to have 5bars 4g LTE with optimal signal strength. If I move my phone 3-4ft. away from the indoor antenna, then the 4g LTE drops, and I am back to Edge.

This is not weBoost fault, but it should be noted that if you are using tmobile, and your phone is only 4g, not 4g LTE equipped, than this product will not work for you. My wife is still using an iphone 5s, and it does not have LTE capabilities so the only thing boosted on her phone is Edge.

    Concluding Thoughts:
I still cannot believe this product works. It does have limitations, but I'm sold, and I have already recommended the product to my neighbors who suffer from similar problems. Buy it, try it, and believe.
