Product Description
The Dyson Small Ball upright has the most powerful suction of any lightweight vacuum¹. It weighs just 12.15 lbs., so it’s easier to carry around the home and lift up stairs. With a retractable handle, it takes up to 50% less storage space than a full-size upright vacuum. The self-adjusting cleaner head automatically seals in suction across carpets and hard floors. It’s also has carbon fiber filaments on the brush bar, so it captures fine dust from hard floors while the direct drive motor pushes bristles deeper into carpets for a more thorough clean. Dyson’s patented Ball technology means it’s easy to maneuver around furniture and obstacles. It includes a 5 year warranty covering parts and labor.

Unpacking and putting together was under 10 minutes - all common sense. Took me longer to figure out where the accessory holder snapped (goes on the base of the long arm beneath the hose) than anything else.
Use: Amazingly lightweight for it's size. I feel like I'm going to break it, it's so light. Never seen so much clear plastic on a vacuum. Maneuvering around and under tables is so much easier than with a traditional vacuum. Just a twist of the wrist turns it left and right with almost zero effort. The brush head is low profile as well - I can fit it in more spaces than with my other vacuums. It is louder than I expected - louder than our Orec, but not so loud that you could not hold a conversation (albeit a loud one.) The lights actually dimmed when I turned the vacuum on - that's something that usually happens with my big wet-vac, not the Orec or Samsung.
Power: Wow. I vacuumed with the Orec, then again with the Dyson. The Dyson picked up an incredible amount of additional dist and dirt. This is a carpet that is vacuumed weekly. So I vacuumed our home office. It should be vacuumed more often, but it's been a couple of weeks. After 10 minutes of use, the canister was more than half way full. Again, mostly very fine dirt and dust. They say that a carpet is a giant dust filter, and this proves it.
Observations: On wooden floors this glides with no effort. Plush carpet takes a little more effort, and deeper piles take the most effort. The handle pushes down so the vacuum is not much taller that a laundry basket with the lid open (it's 32") - that's the space in the bottom of most closets. Meaning the vacuum can store in some pretty compact spaces. The cord is LONG. You can do a large room without moving outlets. The hose is also very long, and cleaning cracks, crevices and tight spots is a snap. The capacity is not that great. It was totally full in under 20 minutes. I had to empty it twice vacuuming three bedrooms, a living room, and family room.
Emptying: The canister pops off with a button push. It also dumps with a button push - kind of. You need to get the canister bottom inside a garbage bag or can - otherwise the dust will kick up and make a mess. Pressing the release button drops the door about 1/2 an inch. I had to open the rest of the way with my fingers. The fine threads and hair that were in the vacuum hung up on the door and I had to knock them free. It also took several raps to drop all the dust. I closed the bottom flap and noticed quite a bit of dust clinging to the canister outside. A damp rag cleaned this off. Took under a minute to empty. The canister was empty - but not close to clean. If you're a clean freak, you'll have to spend another 10 minutes cleaning the canister. The clear cover releases from the cyclones for cleaning. This can be wiped down with a damp cloth.
There's also a filter in the top and another in the base that need to be cleaned. Unlike vacuums with filters that need to be replaced, the Dyson filters are designed to be washed and reused. We spend around $5 a month on vacuum bags - we change them every couple of weeks whether they need it or not to avoid that musty dirty vacuum odor.. That's $60 a year in savings not having to purchase bags. Plus the Dyson does a LOT better job.
My GF is a lightweight - probably 115 lbs dripping wet. She loves this vacuum because it's so light and easy to use. If she's happy, I'm happy. If you vacuum large areas, this smaller model may not be for you as you'll be emptying it often. For a typical home I'd expect you to empty it twice each time you vacuum. Since emptying it takes under a minute, it's not that big of a deal.
Pictures: one shows what the Orec missed. The other is dumping it in the trash. Yea, not exciting but I hope informative.

I will add, though, that my family has a DC14, which is a larger vacuum. After using a DC14 for several years then getting behind the wheel of this small ball vacuum, my perspective is different than my mothers. The DC14 is MUCH more solidly built, it is easier to take out and put away (the small ball vac comes apart easily when manhandling it out of the closet, putting it away or carrying it around).
It's all relative; mom loves it and it work great for her.... we'll leave it at that... =D
