Quick note: I opted for the black strap/silver face version of the LG Urbane®.
Construction
The LG Urbane® arrives in a nice box and includes the watch, charging base, and USB cable. The watch itself feels durable, with a large screen that is bright and easy to read. As with all new electronic devices, I placed the watch on its charger to top it off while I perused the instruction manual. It only took about thirty minutes to charge it completely upon arrival; from completely drained it only takes about an hour to recharge, a truly speedy timeframe. The leather wristband is a bit stiff, but it will become more flexible over time. The watchstrap has many holes cut into it, more than a traditional watch, and thus offers a comfortable fit for a variety of wrist circumferences. This aspect is especially great for me as I have always had terribly skinny wrists (7in around); with the Urbane® I am able to cinch the watch snugly against my wrist, ensuring both the watch not spinning around my arm and proper contact for the fitness tracker.
After owning this watch for nearly two full months, the contrast stitching on the watchband has not started to fray, and the two loops that you feed the end of the strap through to keep them from sticking out are still in-place and have no damage. In addition, even with no screen protector the LG Urbane® looks brand new still, with the only cosmetic issue being the lack of shine around the silver face. There are no scratches, nicks, or other signs of wear-and-tear, which is amazing considering how brutal I am on watches. Definitely impressive!
Sure, It Looks Great, but How Does It Perform?
First and foremost, FOLLOW THE SETUP INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER! It is absolutely imperative that you download the Android Watch app to your phone/tablet and initiate the pairing through that software. If not, the watch will not be able to sync with your phone, resulting in the incorrect time being displayed and other issues. I made the mistake of not following the instructions and had to factory reset the watch in order for my phone to recognize it. Don’t make my mistake!
Once setup, the Urbane® will scour your device and copy compatible apps to the watch. Paypal, as an example, will allow you to browse items to purchase, and if you wish to check your transaction history the watch will open the app on your cell phone so that you can see more detail. In fact, whenever the watch is not able to display an app, it will tell you that it is opening the corresponding app on your phone/tablet. While this tends to happen more often than not, I did not find this to be inconvenient.
Whenever you receive a phone call, the watch will display the caller ID and vibrate; likewise whenever you receive a text or email, you will be able to see the contents, but not any attached images. App messages will also appear, and with the P-OLED display and tweakable font size settings, you will be able to see everything clearly. The Urbane’s® screen is simply beautiful, and it can be dimmed if it is too bright (this can be the case in a movie theatre), or even made brighter if you want to use the Flashlight function!
The Fitness Tracker enables you to monitor your steps taken, distance traveled, and heart rate, and then track this information to approximate calories burned. Need to set a reminder? The watch allows you to do that with its Google Voice software, even enabling you to set a reminder for a specific place through the GPS capability. Thus, if you are running errands and think of something that is not on your list, simply set an alert for that item to pop up when you are in the store! Convenient!
Some other features include:
1) Calculator: I guess Casio® left their mark!
2) Navigation: use it for GPS information if you need directions!
3) Say “Ok Google” and give a command for the watch to perform, such as sending a text, placing a call, or setting an alarm. No hands needed.
4) Navigating the screens is easy: swipe up, down, left, or right.
5) Contacts: swipe right twice and browse your contacts list to make a call.
6) Download a wide variety of faces for the watch, including weather radar, Pac-Man, and more; the Android store means more than a handful of faces (as opposed to the Apple Watch).
7) Water resistant: wear it in the shower or while doing dishes and don’t worry about frying it.
The battery life is phenomenal; I can get about 24 hours of use out of it from one charge, a little more if I am not fiddling around on it much. The heavy-duty processor included with the Urbane® also means that it is not clunky. I have not experienced any lag or other performance issues.
Final Say
If you want an Android watch that looks professional, is easy to read, has a whole host of features including a fitness tracker, GPS and alarm settings, weather tracking, and more, then the LG Urbane® is definitely one that you should consider. Cheaper (by far!) than the Apple watch, the Urbane® is sleek, sexy, and amazingly convenient to use. Whether I am checking the time and temperature, skimming an incoming text message, or checking my pulse, the LG Urbane® performs flawlessly. Plus, with the open Android market, there are tons of apps and features being added every day!
So, with this said, I give the LG Urbane® a solid 5 out of 5 stars, and recommend this investment. You will not be disappointed!
Pros: I've gotten many compliments after I changed out the leather watch band to a 22mm stainless steel micro chain watch band. Most people notice the band first then wonder what kind of watch you have. I wore the leather band for a week and the only people to notice the watch either didn't say anything or had direct contact with me using as a store loyalty card scanner (loving that app). The battery lasts all day. I really don't know what Apple was thinking they advertise 18hr average use, that is best case average. I used mine practically non stop, loading apps, playing with apps, unloading apps, setting, settings, settings, using the crap out of "ok google" for launching, texting, and placing one phonecall and the LG Urbane lasted me 18hrs and I had 11% battery left so I placed it on the charger. Speedy charging! It was bed time and I was a little bummed that I wouldn't get to use the sleep android app to see how that worked out (that app is just ok). However after a half hour of bed time ritual (brush, floss, and other water closet necessities) I checked how much the watch had recharged. FULL CHARGE! Sleep app to the test. The sleep app prevented the watch from lighting up or vibrating and also my phone from giving notifications, so in the morning I was at 89%... I risked it. It should last me all day. Having gotten over most of my "new toy" fiddling the day before again at the end of the day 11%.
Cons: The wifi networks ask for my password when I am away from my phone. This was suppose to be the purpose of the wifi, being away from the phone and still syncing information and content. A message pops up that asks me to input the password on the phone. A major fail. The watch needs the phone to remember the password. I actually don't have to enter the password again, as a matter of fact I entered the password once when the watch was first connected and that was it. Once I am reconnected with the phone the wifi tells me it is on again and connected to the network. The silly part is once it is connected to the phone, I don't need the wifi anymore.
The other con is a comprehensive tutorial in the way apps/features use the battery. Several pre loaded watch faces come with Android Wear and LG insists this is the only way to connect the device and all that is fine. LG let us know how easy it is to switch watch faces but they could have done more to tell us why we wouldn't want the fitness or navigator watch faces on when we are not actively being fit or navigating. Simply put widgets embedded in watchfaces use more power. Fit seems to use the most, navigation the second most, and naturally animated watch faces would use more than statically updated watchfaces. Look for settings that reduce animation with titles like 'discrete animation' or 'smooth animation' often this setting affects only the second hand. So I'm chalking this con up to lack of educational material up front. I can certainly see many users being upset with how their watch lasted all day and then suddenly it is not.
Preference: I see a lot of bad comments on the size of the watch. The physical characteristics are clearly listed and I know you can't really tell until it is on your wrist but I don't agree with giving it a bad review over it. My previous watch was a Casio G-Shock solar recharging watch. The LG Urbane has much more surface area but the distance across my wrist is actually about the same. The Casio G-Shock is a large watch designed for impact resistance with large rubber bumpers and extra thick crystal. It is a man's watch to be sure. I think the LG Urbane is very manish. The band would really decide. I have seen ladies sport normal watches with large faces and elaborately feminine bands. These ladies might also be called hipsters wearing watches that look like they are supposed to be their grandfathers. So I purchased this watch knowing it was large which is the kind of watch I want. If you don't want a 22mm wide watch... don't buy this.
Top reviews from other countries
Otherwise, the LG Watch Urbane is a fantastic device. Looks just like a watch, compared to a disk like look of the moto 360. Love android wear. Shows the strength of open software compared to a closed env. like Apple watch. Yes, it's pricy.. but hey, a regular Swatch watch is about 10,000 bucks. This is a smart watch! That's how I convinced myself! But, yes, it's pricy :)
Seamlessly syncs with my Samsung galaxy Note 4 through bluetooth and wifi (over cloud), needn't be the same wifi network (another plus for Android ware vs. Apple watch). The watch is fast, very responsive (except, I wanted the Standby to ON time a lot faster when you flick your wrist to see the time, smooth UI (except for the scroll defect in my piece), but could be more smooth, wouldn't say it stutters. I do find the watch display to be very sharp and contrasty, but the display is a little small for my liking. But the watch size itself was fine for my medium-small sized wrist. During my first honeymoon day the battery lasted me only 9 hrs from 100% to 30% (always on), but I wouldn't be doing this on a regular use day. So I'm sure it will last way longer. Charges quick enough. Loved the steel look, but hated the leather band. I'll get another one in the hope that it will be fine. And then get it a metal band.
ps.: Watchmaker premium has excellent faces with unbelievable customization and functionality.
Update: I got the other watch. Same model, another hardware problem.
1. This time the screen flashed violently with firey colors when the screen changes from OFF to ON mode (not to be mistaken for boot up process). This happened a good number of times, especially when the screen is left in OFF for more than 10 mins. This clearly is a hardware problem. I have changed different watch face, different charge levels, minimal apps and faces on-watch, upgraded firmware, factory reset.. you name it. I have a video of this phenomenon and will try to upload.
2. Also, when coming from Always ON mode to Full ON mode (either by touch or by wrist gesture) the screen stutters a bit and then shows the Full ON watch face. Again, this happens everytime the watch isleft in Always ON mode for more than 10 mins.
3. When coming from Always ON mode to Full ON mode (either by touch or by wrist gesture) the watch face dances and appears to be coming from a certain direction, an animation that plays out for maybe 10 to 20 pixels. It's funny because the direction (angle) from which it appears seems to change about every 10 - 15 mins. Wasn't able to relate it to anything. but I'm sure it's a software problem.. maybe even that of Android Ware. It's minor.. but my keen eyes don't forgive it and that makes it irritating! Nevertheless, I'm willing to live with it.
1 and 2 are both hardware issues. The 2nd problem seems to be related to the 1st one. Generally, when I see something wrong in an equipment, it only worsens with time. So, I decided to return this too.
I spent many hours testing to see if it was a software or hardware issue. Why should I be doing the testing when I'm spending Rs. 30000 to buy a premium product? Should LG not have done it's bit? This was a very disappointing experience. I'm even suspecting if problems are related to that batch of watches, or something fishy happening with the seller's stock. But the box and hardware look brand new in mint condition. Who knows what's next if I buy the 3rd one from this vendor/batch. So I decided to wait it out, or I may even buy one from the Pai International store nearby, hoping it will not have any hardware issues since it will at least be from a different batch. Let's see what it holds for me.
Cheers
