Bottom line, great watch! Here's a DETAILED review...

Bottom line, great watch! Here's a DETAILED review...
I purchased the SILVER model with the black stitched strap. I will comment a bit on the looks but looks are so relative to each of us.I’m giving it 5 stars because it’s the best watch based on everything that’s available RIGHT NOW (June, 2015). It does have weaknesses but they are ones that exist because of the state of the entire Android Wear eco-system. These will improve over time.-- LOOKSI like it. I like the band. My only complaint is that it’s a bit big (chunky). I spent a couple days looking in mirrors trying to decide if it was too big. I have relatively thin wrists and I haven’t worn a watch in over a year. After debating for a couple days, I decided to keep it. Seriously, the decision was heavily based on its size because the functions of the watch were pretty neat – but keep reading.Keep in mind that the “frame” of the watch does not wrap around your wrist. It sticks straight out from the frame around the circular screen. For a thin wrist like mine, the strap pulls straight down. There is no strap wrapping around my wrist.-- PHYSICAL FUNCTIONALITYThe screen is slightly recessed in the frame of the watch so your finger will sort of ride over a bump as you swipe. It’s not nearly as pronounced as it is on the G Watch R. To me, it’s acceptable and it does provide some protection for the screen. The crown is large enough to easily press while you are wearing it and you get solid “click” feedback when you press it.Common question answered here >> It does not have a speaker. You cannot make/receive calls on the watch. You can interact with your phone to place/answer calls. For example, you can tell your phone to dial a number but you need your phone to actually talk to the person. Basically, it is most handy when it comes to seeing who is calling and rejecting the call without taking your phone out.It only vibrates to communicate with you. No sound.-- THE SOFTWAREAs of June 24th, the watch is running the latest Android Wear software (5.1.1) so it’s definitely several generations in. Since the watch is indeed 3rd generation, a lot of the bugs have been worked out and its usability has improved over the past year. It’s still not perfect. You’ll find that it doesn’t always respond quickly to a left swipe and sometimes it takes a few seconds to load an app. For some reason, on a watch, that can feel like an eternity.-- CONNECTIVITYLike all smart watches, this watch is mainly Bluetooth so you’ll be leaving your Bluetooth on while using this watch. I am finding that this drains my phone battery a bit faster (LG G3). I am also finding that the watch and phone don't always maintain a solid connection. It's a little fussy.I have experienced the inability to use the voice functions a couple of times for no apparent reason (the watch reports that it can't connect or it is offline). It also has the latest connectivity mode – WiFi. Basically, this lets you maintain communication with your phone even if you are outside Bluetooth range. You can get all the notifications and do many things you could do via Bluetooth using the WiFi connection. It seems you can't use voice functions though.BUT WAIT… I have a hard time imagining situations where having that WiFi option is really important. The watch needs to be in a WiFi network that you have logged into before on your phone or an open network AND the phone need to be connected to a network (either WiFi or carrier) for this to work. They can be separate networks but think about it… how often are you more than 30 feet from your phone AND standing in a WiFi network. We tend to carry our phones with us. The only situation I can think of where this would happen is in your house – and a house where the Bluetooth connection is broken between your phone and watch. It can switch to the WiFi in your house. Other than that, in the real world, I don’t see the use. Maybe I’m just missing something. Feel free to comment on this. This isn’t a negative of the watch. I’m just saying don’t think that WiFi is that important right now. It may be more useful in the future.-- BATTERYThe battery lasts all day for me. I would say, with “normal” use, you’ll go about 14 hours. Again, we’re in the “relative zone” – what you consider “normal” use may not be what I do.-- APPSThere are a lot of apps but I would say that the app ecosystem has a ways to go before it’s matured enough to be as solid as phone apps. You’ll find that a lot of apps still have glitches. Maybe it’s just because they recently deployed the 5.1.1 software update and apps need to catch up. The biggest problem is breaks in communication between the phone and the watch.-- WHAT ABOUT THAT OTHER WATCH (APPLE)My partner has an Apple watch so we did some head-to-head comparisons. This Urbane basically beat the Apple watch on every voice interaction. We would ask questions and the Apple watch frequently referred him to the phone while the Urbane delivered responses on the watch (this is because of Google Now). The Apple watch also required a lot more touch interaction where the Urbane could complete tasks based on voice alone (e.g. sending a text message). However, the Apple watch did seem to operate a little more smoothly. My partner, an Apple lover, actually preferred the Urbane but since he has an iPhone, he was stuck. The Apple watch is a very nice device but it’s generation one. In the end, it just boils down to what ecosystem you’re in. You’ll do fine with the Apple watch if you are an iPhone user. Apple and Android just have two different approaches.-- ADVICE IF YOU BUY THE URBANEBe patient! For some reason, I’ve found that after you first set it up (or after you do a factory reset), it needs time to get everything set up. I would allow a couple hours for it to “settle” in. I noticed that some apps don’t work correctly right away but a few hours later or the next day, everything is working normally. If you install a new watch face or new app, don’t give up on it right away. Give it some time. For watch faces, look at them and if you like their looks, you may have to give them some time for all the functions to start working. If you don’t like the looks, make sure you return within 15 minutes so you get a refund. If you play around installing and uninstalling apps and watch faces, reboot it to clear things out before you go on to use it regularly. Same thing – give it some time to get itself set up.In the end, after several days of internal debate, I decided to keep the Urbane. I’ve been using it for a few days and I’m really happy with it. I am looking forward to improvements that iron out the glitches.Hope this helps someone! One more tip. There is a free app called “COFFEE” that has an incredibly clever way of dealing with text messaging. Check it out.
