To date I've used it for cooking rice, oatmeal, stir frying, making soups, boiling eggs, frying plantains and steaming sweet potatoes. The results have been satisfactory.
Even though there is no shutoff switch there is a cancel button which I press before unplugging the machine. I would recommend using a wooden or bamboo spatula or rice paddle instead of the plastic ladles provided to stir food in the pot.
One bit of a gripe is the moisture generated from the vent which can build up underneath overhanging cabinets. At least the vent directs the steam in one direction. Also the four legs lack a nonslip feature which can make it a bit slippery on smooth tabletops. Nothing a bit of vynil can't fix but thought it worth a note.
Overall I'm happy with this purchase and look forward to recouping the cost many times over through the hopefully extended lifespan of this product.
Updating/downgrading to 3 stars, due to just not easy to use. It out performed my Zoji rice cooker, but this is about the only feature I use it for, Not practical for it's Size/footprint, and it is heavy to bring out. Probably will replace with another multi cooker.
The menu function is confusing, and good luck with the manual.
I owned the Phillips model above before. It features the same wonderful non-stick bowl, but has so many other great features. Easy to use, simple and easy to clean, and it is larger than this one, which seems to take up lots of space for the small bowl it has. Pony up the extra cash for the other model and you won't be disappointed. I'm trying to clean this thing to get a few more uses out of it before I repurchase the HD 2137, but I'm not even sure I can get the damn thing back together to do that.
So I started shopping right away for a replacement and found this almost identical unit here on Amazon.
I think it has been upgraded a bit. The inside pan seems to be heavier than the one I had before and the small handles on the pan stay cool so you can pick it up without mitts. Also the steaming tray now has the ability to hold eggs to steam cook them in the shell.
I use this a LOT - for baking cakes, making rice, as a slow cooker, making soup etc. I have a nice large kitchen so don't need to save space but this would be a PERFECT addition to a small kitchen or for a college student.
You really have an extra burner to boil potatoes or even an extra oven to an extent if you are making a cake etc.
Why not 5 stars?
It is WAY over priced in my opinion. This unit was double what I paid for almost the exact same thing in France
The slow cooker only has one setting which I assume is high. I like to start my roasts on high for 2-3 hours (I normally put the roast in completely frozen) - and then move it to low for 3-5 hours more. I couldn't see a way to change the slow cooker temperature.
Top reviews from other countries
The rice portion should be of a certain size or it will be overcooked. Also if you leave it in the warm up mode it will also be overcooked and burned.
Good for morning oatmeals, otherwise cooking is more efficient and fast on the normal stove.
Things are coming out of mine tasting like restaurant quality food with very little effort, thanks to set and forget! Even switching cooking functions to make a complete dish like ribs I did the other night, is no hassle at all!
Easy peasy! Easy clean! Easy cooking!
1) Fahrenheit are not changeable to Celsius
2) user guide as well as a couple of recipes suggest that minutes should be adjustable for slow cook mode. But minutes are not actually adjustable, one can only adjust hours. Philips live chat was not able to suggest a solution.
3) both the user guide and menu book has some bugs: missing slow cook mode description similar to other modes; pictures not properly linked to mode descriptions; and even some temperatures not correctly converted between F and C.
In addition, the lid does not open wide enough in this North American edition. So you cannot take the pot out of the cooker easily but should manually open the lid a bit extra.
