Size was what I expected - I got a bit worried bc several reviews mentioned it was bigger than expected, but I didn't think it was- it's exactly how I imagined, a small but decent size, for personal use or cooking for 3-4 people. You can probably fit a cup of two of liquid in the bowl, to give you an idea of the scale. It's not super heavy but it has enough weight to it that it's not going to go flying if you use pressure when grinding.
It was surprisingly efficient for my needs: I needed to break down small, hard, pebbly pieces of rock and mineral, and occassionally plants, to pulverise into powder. I have tried several other methods and this was so much easier. Grinding works better than brute force or hammering the larger pieces, and I was able to pulverise it into a very fine powder relatively fast, just by grinding the pestle around.
There is a small rubber ring for gripping to the counter. I should mention that I have minimal use of my left arm, after a fractured humerus that healed improperly. This makes every day tasks very difficult, since I have no weight bearing ability. I was surprised how easily I was able to use this with just my right hand and arm, and how quickly it got the job done. You don't need a lot of strength to use this.
The lid was nice for keeping things from flying everywhere, but it does limit your range of motion when you start out, and blocks your view of the progress, so I took it off. Once most of the larger pieces of mineral and stone were powder, I popped the lid back on and resumed grinding it into a finer powder, and it was fine then.
The only complaint I have is that I lost a significant amount of the powder to the tip of the pestle, and the mortar bowl. At first I thought there was some kind of very fine, concentric/ribbed type surface to the bowl, but upon further inspection, there's not- it's very smooth. I tried to remove the powder stuck to the bowl and pestle with a small paint brush, then a new make-up brush for loose powder that I hadn't used yet, and finally my finger. None of them really did a good job of this.
Oddly, given the sticking, it cleans very easily - I wiped the inside out with a wet paper towel, which instantly removed the powder stuck to it, and then washed it like any other kitchen device. I'm not sure why the powder sticks and assume it just is a combination of the viscosity of the material you're grinding, and perhaps some kind of texture to the surface that is microscopic and not visible to the average eye.
Overall, a great little buy- perfect for seeds, nuts, plants, and even other hard, rocky substances you might need to break down, but on a small scale (I ended up with about 20 grams of pulverised powder, and there was still plenty of room - you could safely grind up to 40 grams of final powder output, without it being overfull. It's easier to do it in smaller increments though, so I would say 20 grams at a time, max, to make sure you get a good result (no chunky pieces) and so you don't have any spillage issues).
The only thing I *wouldn't* suggest it for is small pills or when you're using small amounts where every bit counts of whatever, bc you*will* lose some to the sides of the bowl and pestle. For example, it's a breeze to grind pills and medication, but if you're grinding a 20mg pill and you have to dose your pets with a very specific amount, it might not be the best solution, since your going to lose valuable medicine, and it's such a small amount that there's a cost loss factor. Perhaps a stiffer brush would remedy the issue; the brushes on my paint brush and new make up brush were not particularly firm. Otherwise, 5 stars. You can't beat the price, either.
My only complaint is that the surface of the bowl could be smoother/more polished, to avoid fine powdered material getting stuck in the nooks and clumping. It’s an easy fix, just requires a little sanding.
Still 5/5 for me, this is an excellent small scale mortar/pestle set for a fair price.
First it works fine, nice and sturdy, tossed some pepper corns and coriander in and ground it up no problems.
Second it's.....yea it has some finish issues, the grinder part has a large crack at the top,it's steel so I can only think it's a thing from the chunk they used, some kind of imperfection, and the bottom of the thing has a rubber ring which is I suspect to keep it from sliding and that's great,it also has a small metal plate with some info stamped on it which was loose so I thought "well don't need that and it's seems mildly glued on so just take it off".....I glued it back on,since it's covering the weight at the bottom...which appears to be a bit of cement from a construction site! LOL! But hey,it works.
So if you want a stainless mortar and pestle this one will work fine, but you may have to give it a little polish and put up with some visual imperfections,I'm not picky but one less star for the less then finished product and questionable QC

It is solidly made, and stainless steel. You will not need to worry about the bottom breaking, as is reported with some ceramic- or stone-based sets. Because the interior surface is smooth, it cleans easily. If you are using a mortar and pestle to pulverize pills, and you are crushing them, this would be a good choice. I use it to pulverize saffron and make my own saffron powder to add to soups, stews and risotto. It works adequately for this task. If you are using this to "grind" other spices, particularly those in the form of kernels or seeds, and want to (for example) take caraway seeds and turn them into a powder to add to bread or bagel dough, then you may be disappointed. The smooth interior surface provides very little grip, and as a result, you simply push the item from side to side without getting much in the way of a size reduction. Similarly, if you want to make a pesto of some sort, this is not an ideal choice. It's fairly compact, and does some things well, so I am keeping it, but for my purposes, if I had found a ceramic mortar and pestle with a solid (rather than thin-walled bottom), I think it would have been a better choice for me. Ultimately, your satisfaction is likely to depend on how you plan to use it.
