    Why on this beautiful green earth would anyone spend $150 on a garbage can? Because we can, I suppose. I like the look. Functionally, it's pretty solid. Sometimes I have to wave my hand around like an idiot to get it to open. Sometimes, if there's the slightest thing in the way of the lid when it closes, it gets mad and starts acting weird. I can tell there are some cheap plastic cogs in that motor assembly, but as long as you don't beat it up, keep it from lifting on its own, and allow proper clearance when it shuts, it seems to be alright. I'm kinda afraid it might roam the house at night and eat a child. The weirdly shaped garbage bags are slightly more expensive (even the amazon ones, though cheaper than the OEM bags) than traditional bags. Standard "tall" 13 gallon kitchen bags no not fair nicely with this can. They're too short. Your garbage will plummet to the bottom of the void, never to be recovered. I suppose you could put a spacer of sorts beneath a bag, but that would be silly. It's a nice can that functions well, and cleans easily.

    I've use this trash can for around 4 weeks and it's really nice. I simply don't have any problem with it opening when I am close or walk by. Almost didn't buy it because of reviews saying it opened every they walked by. The place I put it is where it's the easiest to use, which is close to the counter top. We are around it all the time but it won't open unless you put your hand down close enough on top of the lip, where the sensor is located. Obviously if someone walk by it and something or their hand passes low enough right over the sensor it will open. But in our case its extremely rare because normally nothing is that low. It doesn't open by being in front it if, have to be top.

    So, its working well and convenient to use with no hands. Better than I expected really and nice to have both hands holding something but can still get the top open. Really quiet and hopefully it lasts a good while before having problems. Looks nice also.

When I open the lid it sense me standing in front of the trash can so the lid stays open the whole time I am standing there. That is pretty awesome! Other automatic trash cans you sometimes feel like you have to “beat the clock” before it shuts on you. I wasn’t even hover directly over it and still count sense I am there for it to stay open. Would make peeling potatoes without the whole top open!

    It’s quite, sleek I am honestly not regretting how much I spent. Didn’t expect to love it this much lol

    We had a simplehuman automatic trash can years ago that was very difficult to clean because it had so many little grooves all over it. We decided to replace it a few years ago, but at the time simplehuman really didn't have any models that were easy to clean, so we went with a much cheaper brand. The cheaper trash can was a little easier to clean, but it was a piece of garbage, ironically... it just didn't work reliably. Fast forward a few years and we finally started looking for a new trash can. Thought this one looked easy enough to clean, and we were NOT disappointed. It is very sleek looking with round edges (no grooves) that are easy to clean, indeed the ~simple~ design that we were looking for all along!

    Update: the company replaced a trash can and it works really well for over a year now. I’ll give this 5 stars.

    Before purchasing, I looked through reviews and saw a few saying the motor broke for them. I remmember telling myself "They did not use it properly, its a user's fault. These are expensive trashcans and manufacturer spent their time and put in quality materials". Was I so wrong. Slowly but surely the motor mechanism broke. At first at was a few innocent misreads/failures to open, then it got worse and it seems like the motor has lost its' understanding on where the open/close limits are. When the lid closes, it tries to close it more and grinds. Then when I open trash can fully to change the bag it clicks and does weird stuff like refusing to open or close.

    In other words this trash can - is trash. Please do not be mistaken that this company cares about you and that you'll be receiving a good product. For me - it is a first and last time I will ever buy anything from this company and I will never reccomend them to someone else. They surely know if the issues surrounding these defective trashcans, but are refusing to take the defective version off the market and replace with working models. They hope that customers who bought the trashcan, will be too inconvenienced to return it. And most people will not. But I will be sure to go through the inconvenice and return this %&$^# and try to forget this experience.

    I am naturally skeptical about a $200 trash can. In this case, my mother has had one of these for over 5 years and it has been trouble free for her. And my brother has had one for several years.

    My wife was complaining that I made too much noise in the morning clanking our old trashcan with a foot-pedal when I got up to feed the cat and she was still trying to sleep. This trashcan solves that problem.

    I needed a kitchen trashcan that would match my appliances and not get dirty looking or scratched with heavy use. I spent a lot of time researching tall trashcans and considered all my options from very inexpensive with simple mechanics to this little beauty. I like the idea of not actually touching the trashcan, thus no fingerprints, scratches from using a pedal to open it, and minimal goop accidentally slopped on the lid.
