The assembly - For those familiar with chainsaws the assembly will be straight forward. Basically, all that is required is to attach the chain and bar to the end of the pole. The instructions are well-written (for a NICE change!), and the saw is packaged with the chain "wire tied" to the bar in the correct configuration. This small package containing the chain and bar is strapped to the pole in the correct orientation to make certain that the chain is installed to operate in the proper direction. (A chain that is installed in the wrong direction will NOT cut, and makes quite a bit of vibration when in contact with the wood.)
Operation - Operation is quite simple, the angle of the bar is adjustable from straight ahead to an angle which allows the most effective angle for cutting. It also helps to take some of the strain off your arms by allowing the saw to more easily be partially supported by the limb you are cutting. It is necessary to be prepared to fully support the weight of the saw as the blade completes the cut, and the limb falls away.
Results - The saw performed as expected. The smaller limbs 1-2 inches cut through quickly. The larger limbs took a bit longer, (as expected). With the weight of the saw pushing down on the limb (and taking some of the weight off your arms) it only took 5-10 seconds to cut through a 5-inch limb. The only real caveat is to be sure you can control the saw as the limb falls away. You don't want the saw to come all the way down and hit the ground, which dulls the chains VERY quickly. Of course, it goes without saying that there should be NO ONE in the area where the limb may fall, or anywhere near the potential path of the saw should it get out of control.
I am nearly 72 years old, and of average strength for a guy my age, and I was able to feel completely safe in the operation of this saw. If you have quite a bit of trimming it is definitely worth the money.
I have a tree that grows over the fence just to hit my roof when it gets windy, given wind speeds, high enough to take the shingles off, I needed something to trim the branches back to a size where they can't hit my roof.
The branches are high enough to require a ladder (I do have one and a hand saw) but have a problem with Vertigo, so I rather not put up the ladder in the clear and get later a medical bill that far exceeds the cost of this device.
With the extendable pole, it is a breeze to cut the branches higher up and I am on the ground, much less of a distance, just in case.
The top heavy saw, has enough weight to cut through with ease, no pressure from your end of the pole required.
I did cut a few branches that had a diameter of around 1.5" - 2", no problem.
It is a great saw for small to medium and hard to reach, jobs....
Cuts well and easily. I agree with others that say not to force the saw and to let it's own weight cut the branches. The telescoping works well and never felt unwieldy. I'm definitely recommending this to others.
