It uses disposable trays that have a plastic lining to help protect against leaking, and each tray comes with a lid for quick and easy disposal. I was skeptical about this litter box. I read the reviews and there were a lot of complaints, but I was desperate so I decided to give it a shot. Mostly because all the other automatic litter boxes were triple the price. I've been using it for a couple of months now, so I feel I am able to write a review. Here are my thoughts:
The box isn't perfect, the design has some flaws but most of them can easily be solved with a little ingenuity.
The best part is that it's easy to change the litter. Just take off the top and cover the old litter with the included box lid and stick it in the trash.
Set up is a little complicated. Make sure you take ALL the blue film off. At first the sensors in mine weren't working and it was because I had missed a couple of the blue film stickers.
Like all litter, it can start to get stinky. But if you just sprinkle some baking soda or Nature's Miracle Litter Box Refresher in there, it helps with the smell and you can stretch one litter tray out for almost an entire month.
The litter is expensive. I want to get the forever tray, but I live in a tiny Brooklyn apartment and don't have a place where I can wash the forever tray out. But if you think about it, if you stretch the litter out to last almost a month, you are only paying 14.00 for litter a month and that isn't a whole lot more than a 20 lb gallon of Tidy Cats. Plus, you are paying for the luxury of not having to scoop every day!
Some people have complained about the cardboard boxes leaking onto the floor. I haven't had that problem, but because I knew it was an issue, I went ahead and bought a rubber litter mat big enough to put completely under the litter box and catch the stray litter my cat kicks out.
The box is a little snug if you have a big cat. My cat is 11lbs but she is long and she is a side pee-er, so sometimes she pees on the poop trap flap and it flows onto the litter mat. Luckily, it is easy to just wipe down the litter box and the mat with a clorox wipe. This doesn't bother me too much because even when she had an extra extra large litter box, she still peed on the sides and it would leak onto the floor.
Some people complain about poop getting stuck to the rake or behind it. I haven't had this issue but I do have the timer set to 20 mins to give the poop enough time to dry out a little before the rake pushes it into the trap. I have also read that you can spray the rake with teflon spray and it will solve that issue.
Over all, I am happy with my purchase and will purchase it again in the future.
At first everything seemed ok, my cat adjusted to it fine, no issues with the functionality of the litter box, and everything was pretty easy to assemble. I had read previous reviews about urine leaking through the bottom, and I never had that issue…but if I had more than one cat I could see how it’s possible.
The litter doesn’t really clump, so yes, the box does an excellent job of scooping the poop. However, that being said, it will be necessary to thoroughly clean each rung of the “rake” as poop does build up on those. Also, because the litter doesn’t clump, the urine in the box mostly stays put. You have to go into the box and mix around the litter manually to deposit the urine throughout the litter to help contain smell. If you don’t do this, there absolutely is a strong urine smell. And if I have to do all of this anyways, I might as well just go back to traditional cat litter and litter box, especially since this litter isn’t necessarily cheap.
For my one cat, I find I need to change the box about every 3 weeks. By this point the urine smell is quite noticeable and that’s my indicator to throw it out. Clean up is relatively easy, as I just put the lid on and duct tape the sides and throw the whole thing out.
There’s more work involved than I would have expected with the product, and if it contained the smell of urine better I would probably continue using it. But I can’t stand the smell of cat pee floating around in my house, so back to the old fashioned way we go!
My kitty adapted to the new one pretty quickly, took him only a few days to come over to pee in it everyday. In less than a week, I was able to remove the old litter box and he is happily using this crystal litter box. I set the scooping time to 20 mins after the cat has used it to make sure everything is dry and easy to roll around. I love that the crystals just magically absorb the pee without any clumping at all, without leaving odor, while dehydrating the poo nicely without leaving terrible smell like the pellet one.
Right after the cat just did his poo poo business, there'll be some smell, but it wasn't terrible and it went away quickly. However, the crystal in the box doesn't seem to be enough to last a month even with one kitten, and my kitty is even outdoor-ish cat. With the accumulated poo being pushed to one side, it does stink up after a few days.
I like that with the crystals, there is literally no tracking, maybe a few but not like a pile of clay litter outside the box every single time my cat use the old litter box lol (seriously, he's a real digger !!!). As for the dust, I wouldn't say no dust, there's still is some but very low compare to regular litter, so I guess it's 99% dust free. I take out the poo out once a week to prevent built up odor and make space for new poo. This really is a good investment so far. I'm just hoping the motor and sensor keep working for a long time and make it worth the cost.
TLTR;
Pros: 10 mins set up; low to no tracking, low to no dust; decent odor control; no need to pick up everyday (you can leave it or just do once a week); cat can adapt quickly.
Cons: Expensive up-front cost and maybe long term cost if using disposable trays. But I do prefer the disposable trays instead of reusable because the reusable tray has less space to contain the dehydrated poo and less odor control. Litter won't last a month for even 1 cat. Built up poo will start stinking.

Highly recommended if you don’t like cleaning or smelling litter ever day. For 1 cat every 2-3 weeks is fine. 😅
Overall I like it!
