About Us
In 1948, Char‑Broil brought one of the first charcoal grills. In the years that followed, we’ve introduced innovations that are now standard among modern grills. And with products like The Big Easy Oil-Less Turkey Fryer and our TRU‑Infrared Cooking System, the evolution continues. While we can’t take credit for the cookout, we have been making cookouts better since Day 1.
For decades, we've been innovating to make grilling easier and more affordable so that friends and families can gather together and make wonderful memories. In fact, our greatest triumphs are rooted in backyards across America. As we look ahead, our mission is to continue to improve outdoor cooking for everyone, everywhere.
The Original Charcoal Grill
Char‑Broil gave America one of its first charcoal grills at a time when outdoor cooking was not common. This new opportunity for leisure quickly turned grilling into a backyard tradition. From that moment to this day, Char‑Broil continues to raise the bar with more firsts, including portable grilling, electric grilling and gas grills with electric ignition.

When I first turned on the burners, I kept wondering if the flame had ignited or not. It’s extremely difficult to see any flame except through the pinholes in the stainless steel plate. It didn’t take long to see smoke rising from the plates. The instructions say to spray the two stainless steel plates with canola oil on both sides to season it – whatever that accomplishes. It certainly turned the color from a gray stainless color to black and ash gray. The burners and cooking grates use 443 stainless steel which is composed of iron, chromium, titanium and very little carbon. It’s supposed to be very resistant to corrosion, especially moisture and salt. I would have been much more pleased if they had used 316 stainless steel. Of course, it would cost more. Thankfully, this grill is on rollers, so I’ll keep it in the garage and covered when not in use.
The assembly was reasonably straightforward, but time consuming. My wife insisted upon doing the entire task by herself just to prove she could do it. It took her over three hours. This grill is very heavy. The shipping weight is 115 pounds and the finished product is right at 100 pounds. Add another 16.6 pounds for an empty propane tank. Then add the weight of propane inside. It gets very heavy with a full tank - over 130 pounds. We purchased an empty and purged Benzomatic 20 pound capacity propane tank and filled it up with propane for $15 on the way home. The grill instructions talk about a propane fuel gauge being included, but there was no gage included in the kit we received – just the regulator. However, an inline fuel gage isn’t very predictable because the pressure remains almost constant right up until the tank suddenly runs out of propane. Weight is the only accurate way to know how much propane fuel remains. I use my luggage scales to weigh the tank periodically. For the cost of a specialized scale or inline gage, I’d spend the money on a spare propane tank. I paid $30 plus tax for my new propane tank – same price at Wal-Mart, Lowes and Home Depot. I elected not to do the tank exchange method because I don’t trust the age and condition of the tanks being swapped. You have no idea what the previous people have done to the exchange tanks. They are only required to recertify the tanks every 12 years. Not worth the risk. Furthermore, I can fill mine completely for $15 – a lot cheaper than a swap. The propane dealer has a balance scale on which the tank sits while propane is being added. I know exactly how many pounds of propane went into my tank. I left with a full tank in well under ten minutes. I use my luggage scales to verify the before and after weight, too.
So if this grille is in your price range, I believe it is a very good product to consider. I give it five stars without hesitation. I did receive this product on Amazon’s Vine program, but I have to pay self employment taxes (double social security tax) on what I receive plus income tax. And that works out to be about 36% incremental tax for me. Amazon reports this as income to the IRS. So it’s definitely not free. Furthermore, I normally must have purchased a similar product on Amazon and wrote a good review on it before I am eligible to receive a Vine product. I’ve written over 800 reviews on Amazon, but certainly the vast majority of those reviews were for things I purchased with my money. I write Vine reviews the same as if I bought it directly and give out the full range of stars from 1 to 5. This is a good solid product. I would not hesitate to purchase it myself.

Internally, the older model used a concave plenum to diffuse and distribute the heat, with cast iron cooking grates laid across it. This plenum was prone to accumulate food debris, and without conscientious cleaning and seasoning, would burn or rust through and need to be replaced. The new model does away with the plenum design completely, in favor of a couple of tent-shaped flame diffusers that sit atop the burners, and above that, pleated and perforated diffuser plates that the cast iron cooking grates sit directly upon.
While the internal heating design is completely different, the grill provides an even distribution of heat across the cooking area, and it minimizes flare-ups better than the old one did.
The pleated diffuser plates need to be scraped clean before each use, or the small perforations can plug up with grease and burnt matter, reducing heating effectiveness. But the grill comes with a little scraper tool that is shaped to fit the pleats, making them easy to clean.
The result: I can count on this grill to deliver perfectly-grilled meats every time, and that's all I care about in the end.
An update (Mar 2020) after 50+ grilling events. I mentioned meats were juicer. Burgers are so juicy that you'll need a bib to eat them, on my old Char-grill they were flat dry boards. All this from a frozen patty. So impressed. Also I never put anything on the grill until the thermometer read 400°F, takes ~15 min to reach that temp.
As you can see from my photo I painted most of the grill cabinet and shelves silver. I didn't like the stainless and black look as shipped. I left the firebox black because some of it is porcelain and it would have required disassembly or masking, neither of which was I interested in doing.
In addition to the painting I drilled three holes in each shelf flange and bolted the two pieces together. I hated the rattley fold down construction as designed so now the shelves are solid. If only Char-broil had provided a simple stainless steel shelf instead of this complicated folding cludge. Cheaper for them, better for most users.
The assembly instruction had you using two people to assemble the firebox and lid onto the cabinet. Since I didn't have a second person, I disassembled the lid from the firebox. Needed a 11mm hex wrench so I finally used that 11mm socket that I thought I'd never use.
Edit Aug, 2020: Found a better emitter plate scraper. https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00L3BN7LE/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Comfortable handle with non-bending scraper blade.
Overall very pleased with this TRU-Infrared grill. I'll use it 150-200 days each year so I'll have plenty of opportunities to find tune my TRU-Infrared grilling technique.

Seems to heat evenly. Works efficiently.
What’s not to like?
Today I used the BBQ without the emitters. I basically used it as a regular BBQ and there was no smoke. Any smoke was minimal and not a nuisance to anyone. The temperature was easy to control and I was able to BBQ with the controls on low, saving gas. The food was great.
Had I known that I was buying just a regular BBQ I would have bought a weber. This BBQ is fine as a regular BBQ. I will not be using the infrared emitters anymore. Also, the emitters need to be cleaned after every use as they clog with grease and charred food.
As a regular BBQ this BBQ is still a good value. Quality seems good.
Update: I only use this BBQ as a regular BBQ and it works great. The emitter plates created a lot of smoke and fire when the plates are above the burners. I now have the emitter plates on the top grill and use it for vegetables.
