Mechanically it works great but the markings are difficult to see

Mechanically it works great but the markings are difficult to see
This tape works great mechanically speaking. The tape pulls out easily and smoothly, the brake (which feels like it’s made of rubber) stops the tape in its tracks when you let go of it. The release button jiggles a little when I brush it with my finger but that doesn’t affect the brake. When I push the button the tape immediately starts retracting and the spring inside is strong so the tape picks up speed very quickly and releasing the button grabs the tape and stops it with a jolt. It’s best to hold the tape between your fingers to slow it down while it’s retracting. I can extend the tape horizontally in the air out to about 5’ before it starts to sag and about 7 1/2’ before it sags so much that I have to support it. The tape is 25 feet long by one inch wide. The hook moves in and out 1/8th of an inch to compensate for the hooks thickness and the two magnets on the hook are quite strong, they stick to magnetic surfaces very well. There’s a removable belt clip on one side and a nylon wrist strap on the back (which I can’t figure out how to remove, might have to cut it off). The tape has two types of measurements on it, American inches (and fractions) on the top three quarters of the tape and metric (centimeters and millimeters) on the bottom one quarter of the tape. For the American measurements every inch is shown (e.g. 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”,…15”, 16”, 17”, etc.) except at the foot mark where it’s displayed as the foot number (e.g. 11”, 1’, 13”,… 23”, 2’, 25”, etc.). Each foot number is shown inside a black rectangle with a small triangle on top pointing to the marking line. The first foot measures fractions down to thirtyseconds of an inch, after the first foot it only measures down to sixteenths of an inch. The eight major fractions of each and every inch are displayed vertically under each of their respective lines and in alternating colors (e.g. 1/8th is black, 1/4 is red, 3/8th is black, 1/2 is red, etc.). Every sixteen inches there’s an elongated black diamond showing the distance between studs and the inch numbers for those are shown inside a red rectangle. Every nineteen and three sixteenths inches there’s a small, symmetrical black diamond indicating the distance between joists. The centimeter numbers are shown in black and repeat every ten centimeters (e.g. 1-9 then 10, 1-9 then 20, 1-9 then 30, etc.) and every tenth centimeter number is red instead of black. All the measurements, both American and metric, appear to be accurate as compared to a ruler that I’m confident is accurate and also another tape measure that I’m also confident is accurate. I remember at least one reviewer mentioned the back of the case is rounded instead of flat and it doesn’t sit square against a flat, vertical surface and also there is no case length shown on the case for making inside measurements. These are true however, I sat the tape down on a window sill and pushed the tape against the side of the window and it sat nice and square and, the tape case length is a standard 3 1/4” (I measured it) so making an inside measurement with this tape is the same as with any other tape, just add 3 1/4” to your measurement. Except for the slightly jiggly release button, the whole thing looks and feels solid and well made (it is made in China) and the tape itself looks and feels clean and solid and well made. I’m giving it 3.5 stars and the reason for the lower rating is the metric numbers are small but thick and easy enough to read and the inch numbers are twice as big as the metric numbers and easy to read. However, both the metric lines and the inch (and fraction) lines are kind of thin and they’re packed fairly tightly together making it kind of difficult to see them and it can be difficult, especially if you’re in a hurry, to differentiate the lines and be sure your pencil tip is on the line where you want to make your mark. It takes longer to find and set your mark and increases the risk of making an inaccurate measurement. I have an older Stanley and the lines are much thicker and easier to see on that tape. I wouldn’t discourage anyone from buying this tape but you might want to take this into consideration when thinking of buying it. It might be better suited for home use (which is where I use it) than professional use where time is more important.

I'm not a man who likes to count hash marks, so having the labels on the hashes is a big plus for me. It takes a little bit to get used to having to press the button to retract the tape (rather than traditional pressing button to hold the tape), but I think I like it. The magnets are nice and strong.

My only gripe is a small one: I would like the thing to be entirely imperial (or metric, but pref. imperial I guess) on both sides of the tape (not front and back, like opposite sides on the marked/concave side). Sometimes when measuring you can only get one side of the tape against what you're measuring, and if it's the metric side and you need inches, you have to do a little conversion or try to equate it across the tape. Not a big deal, but it puts me about 95-99% satisfied instead of 100%. So the tape measure still gets a solid A-rating from me. And in time it will probably teach me metric conversions, which I suppose is a good thing.

Also I like the nylon tape instead of metal. It's sturdy, and it doesn't feel like it will slice me open if I retract it while it's up against me. But I'm sure I'll find that out for sure in time. This is replacing my old Stanley of ~15 years whose brake doesn't work anymore. I hope this one can meet or exceed that service life; it feels like it probably can.

Has all of the features I need, nice to have a metric tape measure in the shop. The features that make it useful:
* Metric and inches
* Magnetic hook
* Truss and stud markings
* Multi-color fractional inch markings
* Auto-lock, with button to retract
* Bright yellow contrast for visibility
* Wide tape extends unsupported
Some people don't like the auto-lock, because bumping the button can retract the tape when you don't want to, which can be frustrating, but it's a matter of using the right tool for the job, so not a deal-breaker.

Why care about metric? Try dividing 3 15/32 by 5 in your head. Or, look and see that it is 88 mm, so 88/10 is 8.8, therefore twice that is 17.6 mm. (Dividing that by 4 would be TOO easy, 22mm.) Or even better, a 3-4-5 triangle to get a right angle is easy to calculate with a metric measurement. And trigonometry is much easier to punch into the calculator if messing around with roof pitches and you need to do a tangent or cosine.

FYI, the diamond markings at about every 19.2" are truss markings, which are at 8 ft/5 (96"/5 is 19.2") so that you can layout 5 trusses per sheet. This gives you a bit more support than 24" on-center, but not so tight as 16", which is usually overkill unless you had some serious snow load. The black markings every 16" are for studs or floor joists for convenient layout.

I can't believe I have gone almost 50 years without a metric tape measure, life is better in my shop!

Tape looks good quality wise. Need some time to get used to the auto-lock function though.. My old tape (which had been used daily for about 7 years) has a small button on the side that I can push to stop the tape movement. Pretty handy that I can "rest" my index finger on the button to stop the tape dynamically (if I push harder it stops completely, if lighter the tape moves slowly, kind of linear), then I can use my left hand to pull the tape out as much as I want.
With the new tape, my right hand thumb sometimes accidentally hit the release button which makes the tape auto-retract while my left hand is still kind of touching the tape's sharp edge...Ouch..
Since there is no mean to control the tape retract rate, it always retract at its full speed. Besides the potential danger said before, the "high speed" retract also makes great "bump" when it hits the end, or when I release the retract button to stop the tape. It has to stop immediately since there is no mean for speed control.
So the quality of the tape is great, but not very user-friendly. The tape isn't designed by a frequent user obviously...

This measuring tape is defintely one of the best I've used in my life so far.

The tape is really heavy duty and it has a good weighty feel to it. It certainly is one of the heaviest measuring tapes i have encountered and makes you feel you like are truly using a professional grade tool.

The metal measuring tape is very strong and i can extend it very far without it crashing down.

The recoil on this bad boy is serious. You DO NOT want to put your finger there to test the power! It will produce a very satisfying audible SMACK

The magnets on the head are also strong enough to be useful when trying to work on a roof project or measuring the side of a home with a metal gutter on the top.

The readings on the tape are also clearly marked in full numberal fractions like 1/8, 5/8. So you won't need eagle eyes to figure out whats going on with your project.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a tape measure and the price is very good as well!

I tried using this item to measure the available height for my new refrigerator without moving the old one. So, I was working in a tight space and had to get the measuring tape against the back of the 'fridge, in a straight line from the floor to the top.
1. The eager magnet at the end of the tape kept grabbing onto the back of the fridge.
2.The tape wasn't stiff enough to work in between the copper water line, fiberboard condenser cover, etc.
3. When I finally got the tape in position, the METRIC side was against the top of the fridge - and since eighths & even sixteenths mattered here, the measurement was useless.
4. When I tried to the extract the tape and rewind it it snagged on something back there and as I wiggled and pulled on it the tape SNAPPED and cut my finger (both of these being firsts in my many decades of using these things.)
5. I almost tripped over myself getting to the car and going to buy another Stanley, Lufkin or other brand that has earned my trust, not awarded it to itself.

1.0 out of 5 stars Looks and feels like a quality tool, made with function-defeating design of crappy materials.
