My only gripe is a small one: I would like the thing to be entirely imperial (or metric, but pref. imperial I guess) on both sides of the tape (not front and back, like opposite sides on the marked/concave side). Sometimes when measuring you can only get one side of the tape against what you're measuring, and if it's the metric side and you need inches, you have to do a little conversion or try to equate it across the tape. Not a big deal, but it puts me about 95-99% satisfied instead of 100%. So the tape measure still gets a solid A-rating from me. And in time it will probably teach me metric conversions, which I suppose is a good thing.
Also I like the nylon tape instead of metal. It's sturdy, and it doesn't feel like it will slice me open if I retract it while it's up against me. But I'm sure I'll find that out for sure in time. This is replacing my old Stanley of ~15 years whose brake doesn't work anymore. I hope this one can meet or exceed that service life; it feels like it probably can.
* Metric and inches
* Magnetic hook
* Truss and stud markings
* Multi-color fractional inch markings
* Auto-lock, with button to retract
* Bright yellow contrast for visibility
* Wide tape extends unsupported
Some people don't like the auto-lock, because bumping the button can retract the tape when you don't want to, which can be frustrating, but it's a matter of using the right tool for the job, so not a deal-breaker.
Why care about metric? Try dividing 3 15/32 by 5 in your head. Or, look and see that it is 88 mm, so 88/10 is 8.8, therefore twice that is 17.6 mm. (Dividing that by 4 would be TOO easy, 22mm.) Or even better, a 3-4-5 triangle to get a right angle is easy to calculate with a metric measurement. And trigonometry is much easier to punch into the calculator if messing around with roof pitches and you need to do a tangent or cosine.
FYI, the diamond markings at about every 19.2" are truss markings, which are at 8 ft/5 (96"/5 is 19.2") so that you can layout 5 trusses per sheet. This gives you a bit more support than 24" on-center, but not so tight as 16", which is usually overkill unless you had some serious snow load. The black markings every 16" are for studs or floor joists for convenient layout.
I can't believe I have gone almost 50 years without a metric tape measure, life is better in my shop!
With the new tape, my right hand thumb sometimes accidentally hit the release button which makes the tape auto-retract while my left hand is still kind of touching the tape's sharp edge...Ouch..
Since there is no mean to control the tape retract rate, it always retract at its full speed. Besides the potential danger said before, the "high speed" retract also makes great "bump" when it hits the end, or when I release the retract button to stop the tape. It has to stop immediately since there is no mean for speed control.
So the quality of the tape is great, but not very user-friendly. The tape isn't designed by a frequent user obviously...
The tape is really heavy duty and it has a good weighty feel to it. It certainly is one of the heaviest measuring tapes i have encountered and makes you feel you like are truly using a professional grade tool.
The metal measuring tape is very strong and i can extend it very far without it crashing down.
The recoil on this bad boy is serious. You DO NOT want to put your finger there to test the power! It will produce a very satisfying audible SMACK
The magnets on the head are also strong enough to be useful when trying to work on a roof project or measuring the side of a home with a metal gutter on the top.
The readings on the tape are also clearly marked in full numberal fractions like 1/8, 5/8. So you won't need eagle eyes to figure out whats going on with your project.
I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for a tape measure and the price is very good as well!
1. The eager magnet at the end of the tape kept grabbing onto the back of the fridge.
2.The tape wasn't stiff enough to work in between the copper water line, fiberboard condenser cover, etc.
3. When I finally got the tape in position, the METRIC side was against the top of the fridge - and since eighths & even sixteenths mattered here, the measurement was useless.
4. When I tried to the extract the tape and rewind it it snagged on something back there and as I wiggled and pulled on it the tape SNAPPED and cut my finger (both of these being firsts in my many decades of using these things.)
5. I almost tripped over myself getting to the car and going to buy another Stanley, Lufkin or other brand that has earned my trust, not awarded it to itself.
