One month review: Game Changer
This high quality keyboard has changed my relationship with my devices. This is my first portable keyboard, so I cannot make a direct comparison. But I will say a few a things about each aspect.Basic Function. I had no trouble pairing this device with the three devices I use: A Samsung Tab S 8.4" tablet, Samsung Note 4 phone, and my workplace Samsung Galaxy S4 which uses the Knox security app for work email. When switching between the devices, I've found the easiest thing is to fold the keyboard so that it's BT shuts off, close and open the BT settings on the respective devices, then open the keyboard and I'm in business in just a couple seconds. If the keyboard sits for awhile (I'm not sure how long, maybe 3-5 minutes), the keyboard apparently shuts its bluetooth off. So you have to wake the keyboard up by punching a key and waiting a couple seconds, just as if you were opening it up. You'll see the connection-made status flash on your screen and you're running again. The build and hinges are every bit as sturdy as they look, and it feels like it could go through hundreds of uses with no issue. The inside of the case has some contours that fit the keyboard folds and some perfectly placed plastic tabs that ensure the folded keyboard sits in exactly the right spot so that the case snugly wraps the keyboard as designed and magnetizes shut. The sides (or top and bottom depending how you see it) are open, but there is a zero percent chance of the keyboard sliding out due to the contours and tabs.Size and Portability. I've provided several pictures for reference. In the folded configuration on the desk, it is sitting underneath the Note 4, which is a 6" phablet nearly identical in size to in iPhone 6+. The folded keyboard is twice as thick as the phone (in it's own case), about 1/2" wider, and about 3/8" shorter. I've discovered that it can fit into my back pocket with no issues. It's not too wide It would fit into a front pocket too (maybe not in a pair of jeans), but might look awkward or be a little uncomfortable unless they were pretty baggy. The significance for the "changed relationship" is that if I'm cruising around running errands or going to the book store I don't have to hand carry anything to give me the benefit of having a keyboard. Of course you can't sit on it... or at least I'm not willing to test that feature. If I'm toting a backpack it goes in there. I'm on planes a lot. Even if I'm stuck in the T-Rex seat (you know, in the middle using your elbows-in technique on the laptop) I can get out a device, knock out some email, and still have room for drink and snack on the tray. I don't see the laptop coming out again on short flights.Typing: The action on the individual keys is excellent. Of course the whole keyboard IS a smaller so you won't be, even after a time, as fast as on a full size keyboard. You can see in the pictures the size of the keyboard compared to one on a normal laptop; you're not giving up much. You can see on one of the tablet pictures showing a youtube clip that you are getting substantially more space than an integrated keyboard, at least on a mid-size tablet. And I have an 8.4" table. If you have 7" it'll be much smaller. As far as key positioning, the up arrow key on the lower right forces your right pinky to do a little stretch to get over to the shift key. It's not far, just not next to the "?". For the first week or two this irked me, even though I knew the keyboard layout when I bought it. Over the next few weeks this has become a non-issue as my hands have adjusted when I'm on that keyboard. I cannot imagine having bought one of the keyboards with breaks in the letters. These keys all fit together perfectly with the one exception. I cannot speak to the functionality of any Android or iOS keyboard shortcuts. I'm sure there are some that work on certain apps or under certain conditions. What I'll remind you is that these devices were designed to work without keyboards. So basically you've got your fingers, and you have letters to type when ready. I haven't found the arrow keys to work the way you'd expect in text messaging at the end of the message- they want to cycle through the "anticipated word" options. But in the middle of a text or on a longer typing app they generally work fine. Even in texting, Ctrl Shift arrow does highlight and Cntl X/C/V all do their jobs. (The first time you do that you are going to deem yourself a genious for this purchase.) The tab key generally gets you from field to field when online. But don't complain if it doesn't. They keyboard can't overcome the app, brower, or OS designs.Stand Function and Finish: The case snaps into a triangle stand mode as you'd expect. There is a built in plastic slide out for holding devices. But where the magnet snaps down leaves enough room for my devices without the slide out. The slide out only serves to change the angle or perhaps hold a very fat device. The stand would have no problem supporting a tablet is as large as a Surface Pro or a 12" tablet (which need their own full size keyboard really). The triangle is only secured to the base with the magnetized tab that flips onto the side of the case when closed. But there are some inner plastic tabs which serve double duty to (when closed) ensure the folded keyboard is in just the right place for storage and (when open) reinforce the top of the triangle so the unit cannot collapse backward or unfasten the magnet. If that doesn't follow, then just trust me: it works. For those that appreciate design, this is one of those simple things that just works great. I've mostly kept the keyboard in the small outside pocket of my backpack. It goes in an out a lot and bangs against power cords and whatever else is in there. It's only been a month, but I'm surprised I haven't picked up a few dings. The surface can get smudges, but you don't even need a proper cloth to wipe it clean. I haven't babied it, but I could still pass this off as brand new.Battery: I have no idea. I didn't charge it when I got it. I've used it at lease some almost every day for nearly a month. Remind me not to whine when the magic runs out and I have to use my fingers for a few hours.Work flow. If you are wondering if you need a separate keyboard, listen up. If you're adding this for a tablet, it's a no brainer. For me, an 8" keyboard that is *always* attached (not thin and light anymore!) but then doesn't even work well and can't be used on anything but the tablet would be a bad solution. You probably sit by a computer part or all of the day. But action on the phone never stops. Keeping the phone upright and with a keyboard to respond to texts is a major time saver. I'm not saying you need to constantly move back and forth, but when you're ready to handle phone business you can knock it out and get on to the next thing. I've found meeting environments (pics include a cursed conference setup) to be an unexpected bonus. When you are set up for a meeting whether you are only handwriting notes or have another computer going, you can add a small screen to the action with no worries and without bothering your neighbors with a larger device. Ever been in a meeting where an issue comes up that someone else on your team knows the answer to but isn't present? Normally pulling out whatever "blackberry" device you have looks like you're not in the meeting. I've quickly discovered that sending out a phone-a-friend request during a meeting via keyboard appears to make it look like you're engaged. Which you are! If you use Evernote or some notetaking app, even if you only have your phone out you can get three times as much detail in by keyboard as with writing and it goes right into your system. If you read this far, you need to buy this keyboard. And get back to work!
