There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I took the time to add a thick coating of rubberized waterproofing paint to the pull-out drawer/floor. Other reviewers had complained that it was not moisture-tight. While I did find that it had a good bead of caulk around the perimeter, I can see how the wood frame would easily absorb moisture how that would cause problems. I sealed the metal surface and the wood surround. As a bonus, I think it might provide a little extra warmth since the aluminum conducts heat and cold very well. I had thought about adding a metal mesh floor somehow, but ultimately decided against it.
I found that the hutch assembled easily, that all the screw holes were aligned properly, and that the whole thing felt sturdy once I had it all together. My best advice is to go slowly when inserting the screws, and make sure you have them properly set in the pilot holes. I used a cordless drill/driver and had no problems. It took about 15 minutes for me to put it together by myself. I decided to use the hydraulic hinge that came with it to secure the wooden top, but you don't have to. However, make sure that you do something to ensure that the roof won't fall all the way open or the hinges will rip themselves out in no time.
I lined the bottom tray with some newspaper and then put down a layer of timothy hay on top. We are in the process of litter training the little guy, and he's not perfect because he's not neutered yet, but he does use the box when he pees, so we are hopeful that the mess will be minimal. We'll experiment with some other types of bedding to see what works best. However, obviously things need to get cleaned regularly or you're just going to have a gross mess on your hands. Right now I have the sheltered area blocked off so that he will get a good sense for where the litter box is. Once it's time for bed, I'll open up the other side for him to sleep. I put a grass basket and some more hay in there so he'll be cozy. I also have a waterproof towel that I can use to cover up the top and side to provide additional shelter on the open side when it rains or snows.
I give this 4 stars because I think it is a good value for the price, and because it serves its intended purpose nicely. It looks great and feels like a piece of furniture. It's a nice upgrade from the modified dog crate he was living in. The size is just right for a standard-size bunny, but my little guy has free run of the porch a few times a day (with supervision) so he can get plenty of exercise. I can't see how a bunny who lives in this cage and doesn't have an opportunity to hop around freely at least once a day would be very happy, though, so keep that in mind.
