But is it a good set?
Well, my son is a Minecraft fan and as such fans know, the game is very much like digital LEGO. It therefore made sense for LEGO to get the Minecraft theme going. And indeed, this set does do a decent job of capturing much of the Minecraft spirit, at least as well as a physical product can do for a cyberspace setting.
I will say that while the set is large, it doesn't really *do* all that much. I mean, there are interesting building techniques in there, but at the end of the day it's not as interactive as I think it should be at this level. I think the value here is about evenly distributed between the stock building (per the the instructions) but also encouraging the builder to modify or create different villages or incorporate the bricks into other sets. The LEGO veterans out there will recognize that formula as something that ALL LEGO sets should have, but for most of the licensed themes (I'm thinking Star Wars in particular) the value is really heavily tilted toward the stock set. People don't generally get an X-Wing set thinking they're going to make something else with it, at least not in the Vox Populi.
In other words, I think this is largely a set of bricks with the Minecraft name on it, and that's pretty much how my son approaches it. It's really aimed toward Minecraft fans (of course), but the actual building isn't much different than, cynical me talking, Lego City or something.
Aside from that focus, it's all typical LEGO quality - pieces are well packaged and organized, bricks are bulletproof quality, and so on. The building steps make sense and help enable an efficient building experience. So I like the set on the merits, but what keeps me from loving it are the lack of "Holy Moly" features in it. A good set but not the best LEGO has ever released.
