I have only had this for 9 days so if it goes bad on me, i will update the review. i was in fear of replacing the previous printer, it's been reliable for 2 or 3 years, office jet 8610. i feared the HP printers are decreasing in quality, i noticed that 8610s are selling used on Amazon for $188, so it's more valuable than the newer comparable ones like this one, new the 8610 was about $110. This one was around $90. Seeing many bad reviews, i was afraid of many things. so i have been relieved that it's working as reliably as the much appreciated 8610 was working and have thought to myself several times, "I love this." So, i decided to write a review before i forget, but without the test of time.
i have made a lot of printed documents and copies since i got it and the original low capacity ink cartridges are still close to full. i rarely use much color. i had bought new cartridges for this the day after i got it because both reviewers and the sales guy at Staples where i first went to buy one (wanting to get it same day, printer being much needed tool for me) warned that those cartridges last a very short time. i haven't reached the estimated number of pages printed yet. But i'm ready with new cartridges if needed.
The automatic document feeder works well, better than the 8610 which was a little crooked no matter what i did.
i tested the Fax , to and from, on the HP fax test number, worked fine.
Hopefully it will last more than a year. For $90, i don't expect longevity but previous printers have lasted pretty good for the money. The 8610 suddenly got a "print head failed or is not installed" error. nothing i could do (i went through all the trouble shooting on the HP help site, until i got to the 'replace print head' step).
i did not buy it at Staples because despite advertising them on their website as having 4 in the store i went to, the sales guy said the inventory was wrong, they didn't carry those. Desperate for a printer, i bought the next cheapest model which was $169, which despite me saying emphatically that i don't want instant ink, the guy included $20 on the bill for instant ink so that the printer came to $200 with tax, way more than what i've been paying in recent years. i took it home but never opened the box, it was a rip off. Amazon had it for $119, but better yet, Amazon had this $90 model and i ordered it, next day prime delivery and i returned the $200 thing at Staples. i asked the guy why he charged me $20 for that instant ink that i said i definitely didn't want, and he said to get that promotional deal of $169 on the printer, you had to get the $20 instant ink deal, otherwise the printer would cost more. not good business. i don't expect to be going back. Amazon = way better.
As for HP customer support, it was ok, i was frustrated because i couldn't reach someone at night to solve my problem, i had a problem the first night with online registration. i entered the serial number and it said i was registered, but it gave my one year warranty period as from April 24 or something like that, to May something of 2020. I bought the printer on July 1 so how do they get starting my warranty period in April 2019? i got a text chat rep to ask about the problem, he saw it and saw i needed to call the next day or use an email address he was going to send me as we spoke.
I sent my issue to the email address and never heard back. i forgot to call, many distractions going on. So, not as good tech support as in the past. Hopefully i'll remember to call them during their much more restrictive hours compared to what they used to have
- I hooked this up to my Windows 10 updated Toshiba laptop with no issues
- The box is lies. It's directly states USB. But you have to have one of those a male to male connector USB cords. It makes you think that you can plug your USB drive straight into it (at least it made me think that)
- I downloaded the driver software directly from the website and I had no issues and I've never hooked up a printer in my life
- I've already printed out a few things and I saw a review on YouTube where the paper tray has a plastic rod that automatically folds out when the paper is printing out to keep the paper from flying off the edge of the printer and that feature didn't come out for me. If anyone knows why I'd appreciate it
- This thing is enormous and heavy. You need to make sure you have at least a few inches behind the printer so you're able to open up the lid
- I had no trouble installing the ink cartridges. No leaking at all whatsoever
- My printer showed the ink cartridges is being completely full immediately after installing. I would be outraged if they weren't all the way full right off the bat. But it even tells you that it's just an estimation and that it could be incorrect
-I was able to edit email address for the printer to what I wanted it to be
This thing has so many features! I am so excited to finally have a printer for college. I'm so tired of having to fight with the college computer system and dealing with the printers on campus always being broken just to print out a freaking paper, which I'm paying thousands of dollars to take classes there so I'd expect to at least be able to print out my school papers with no issues. I got tired of frequently having to walk to three different buildings to try to print one paper and being late for class by like 30 minutes.
Now I'm praying that I don't have any issues with this printer. At least it only cost $70, so if I do any run into any issues with it like I've seen other people have, I can just buy a new one.
Also, I've seen people commenting on the price of ink. I did weeks of research on different brands of printers and this is the average price of ink. This is actually on the low side of the brand name printers I researched. There's no way around it. Unless of course if you get a laser printer and that ink is Sky High but they last you a lot longer. Like 10x longer for only 3x the price. But I didn't need print quality photos. I got this for school. I hope I don't kick myself in the butt for not getting a quality photo printer later on.
I saw this on HSN and they had pictures printed out that they said were printed out from this printer and they were amazing. That was lies too. Those pictures were not printed from this printer. I watched reviews on YouTube of people printing out pictures and they looked like crap as well just like the pictures I printed.

If you are thinking of printing photographs from Photoshop, you might be out of luck. Images sent to this printer from an older version of Photoshop will not print because Photoshop will simply quit, without a reason given, every time you try. I can't help but think that there is some sort of collusion going on here: HP wants you to only use their ink, and Photoshop wants you to rent only the newest version of their application from them. If you don't, their products will not work for you. Since I had planned to use this printer for primarily printing photographs, it is now pretty well useless for me. And that's why I feel ripped off, manipulated and cheated and that makes me a very, very unhappy customer.
