Easy to set up, faster wireless, happy family
I have a lot of wireless devices in my house. The Verizon FIOS router that brings in the Internet has a really awful, low speed Wi-Fi. The Internet is dramatically faster than the wireless can fling it around the house. I’ve had a second access point around the house which provides much higher speeds, but it has started to get flaky lately. This has us all sharing the slow one. I wanted something faster and more reliable to replace the aging system.I’d recently gotten a Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch, which allows me to remotely power peripherals through the Ethernet cable, and I was very interested in an access point that could take advantage of the new technology. I have enough wall warts cluttering up the house without bringing in any new ones. That part worked flawlessly. Plugging in the new access point to the PoE switch lit up the access point with no additional power supply. The switch showed a minor current draw, but left plenty of power for other devices.Setting up the access point is about the same as any other. It needs to be plugged into a PC through the Ethernet port and have some of the setting assigned. Like the SSID names that it would use to announce itself and the appropriate types of encryption. It allows for separate SSIDs for the 2.4 GHz range and the 5GHz band. That makes it a little easier to keep the fast and slow devices away from each other. I like that I can enable the separate bands individually. I don’t have any of the 5 GHz devices in my house today, so I don’t need to run the radios.One of the most important settings to change is the router password. Most bad guys can probably guess admin and Admin. Overall, setup was very much like any other router. A few important settings needed to be done right away, and there are plenty of settings that can be changed to fine tune the system later, should the need come up. A power supply is included, which is quite helpful during configuration, but I won’t be needing it with my PoE switch.My laptop connected up to the new access point without any hesitation once I got the configuration the way I like it. Most importantly, the router is much faster than the Verizon one. It can keep up with the FIOS speed that we paid for, and the whole family is happier. Web sites are loading faster and the video runs more smoothly. Exactly what I was hoping for! I received this product at a discount in exchange for my fair and honest review.
