A Cuisinart Miss
3 Stars
A Cuisinart Miss
We've owned other Cuisinart products and have come to expect above average performance and features, but this air fryer/convection oven missed the mark by a wide margin. Enough so, that I've considered returning the oven for a refund. There are four circular controls along the top edge that are not only archaic in style, but even worse in design. The black markings for each control run into one another and stretch around the entire circumference so that some are below the button, where they are hard to see. Set against the shining chrome, they are so hard to read that we keep a flashlight nearby for mornings and evenings. Unacceptable! There are two BAKE and two BROIL settings (fan and no-fan) that elude me. I once tried warming a bagel with the Fan-Bake mode set to 300 degrees and in less than ten minutes turned a $1 bagel into a 2" circular ember. Last I recall, 300 degrees was a warming oven. I had surmised that placing the bagel on the middle rack position made sense. Oops. To say that you'll need to re-calibrate your understanding of oven cooking is an understatement, but as you'll read below, all is not lost. Then, there is the ambiguous pair of old-fashioned tick-tick-tick countdown timers: On the right is a TOAST timer and on the left is an OVEN timer. Both have such course gradients that fine-tuning your cooking times are not possible. So, if eight minutes got you perfect results last time, good luck repeating that recipe! Both timers can be running at the same time and it might be ambiguous enough to confuse the elderly and the young. I haven't tried to learn where running both timers could pose problems. One last complaint: The hot air blown from the oven can be extremely hot, especially during air-frying. That air ejects directly to the back and could become a safety issue. The manufacturer warns NOT to place it near a wall, but this is simply not practical on most countertops! Those who do not read the instructions carefully may learn the hard way. We pull ours out from the wall before using. Another major inconvenience. Now, there are some features I do like: Toasting bread yields consistently repeatable results and for the first time I like the toast coming out of a countertop oven! The bread seems to brown evenly no matter where you place it on the grate and the centers are not dried out to a crackly crunch. Oven heating is downright magical: Foods that you've come to expect overcooking the outside while barely heating the inside (like stuffed Quahogs) will be a joy to cook. After some trial and error, you'll be scratching your head! How'd they do that?On balance, this is not worth the MSRP. After all my discounts (20% or more), the sale price came in around $125. Any more than this, I'd be sending it back. Overall, I'm disappointed in this appliance. The cooking results are getting better as I learn how to use it, though I still ruin valuable foods regularly. The usability is horrible and it's unlikely that I will ever love it. I'd consider a Cuisinart with lighted digital controls but this will be the last time I buy anything with these dated dials. I'm at least hopeful that Cuisinart quality will make this purchase worth it. My recommendation is that you shop around. There are worthy competitors. Good luck.

My wife wanted one these for years. I resisted, saying we already had a stove, why do we need another little stove?

Dear reader, I was wrong. Turns out this is one of the most useful kitchen appliances I’ve ever bought. Here’s what I like:

- Cook times are incredibly short. This thing heats up quick and cooks fast. A 2 lbs bag of cauliflower florets is done in 25 minutes. A frozen pizza that would take 25-28 minutes in the big oven is done in 10-12 minutes.

- It’s incredibly helpful to have a second stove when cooking for a crowd.

-It’s the summer kitchen I’ve always wanted. It doesn’t heat the house up like the big stove, and if necessary I can plug it in outside so the kitchen is not heated at all.

What I don’t like:

- Questionable durability. My first one broke in less than a year. The broiler functions stopped working and I was able to return it. I tried a cheaper replacement but it was terrible - slow, uneven cooking. So I got another one of these.

This is very basic technology, and if they built it to last I’d have no complaints. Plus, it’d be better for the environment.

Overall, though, it’s great. I use it at least four nights a week. If you’re on the fence go ahead and buy it. You won’t regret it.

Update April 2021: Bought a replacement on Amazon in July 2020. By April 2021 the function knob failed on the new unit. Waiting to hear back from Cuisinart on a possible replacement, but these are clearly not designed for use in a busy family. They are too expensive to have to replace every 9 to 12 months, and the cost difference between a a cheap selector knob and a quality selector knob can't be more than a few dollars for the volume a large company like Cuisinart is buying. Is doubly disappointing as we typically just leave it on the convect bake feature - the function knob doesn't even see much use.

I must have researched a new toaster oven air fryer combo forever. I didn't like the look of this one -- it's bulky and I wanted something more sleek on my countertop. However, we use the toaster oven a minimum of six times a day for various reasons, so I wanted it to function like an oven more than just it looking nice.

I was very concerned, also, about all the commentary about it being too hot -- both to the touch and also that it was scorching people's food to a crisp. I have been using it for a few weeks now and I can report that it does not get any hotter to the touch than my old toaster oven and maybe is a little less hot so far because this one cooks things faster than my old Cuisinart and so it's heating for a shorter time. This is comforting because I have a tween using it regularly.

ALSO, to resolve the problem people seem to have with it burning their food I have just kicked down the temperature by 25-degrees with everything to see how it does. So far it is doing fine with that adjustment -- nothing has burned and everything has been cooked through.

Overall, this unit really saves me some cooking time so far, which is invaluable. I have used all of the cook-type options with excellent results. I was a little disappointed that the size inside is still small compared to the Ninja XL, so that is limiting. And, I have gotten used to the look of it on my countertop, although it is bulking and basically looks like I have a miniature oven on top of the counter. However, it works very well so far.

This is my second one of exactly the same model (I have the stainless steel one). I was so happy to find Cuisinart still made the exact same model. Why?? I love everything it can do and the size is perfect. The first one died after 5 years of daily use for everything from toast to air frying. A++ to Cuisinart for a great product. Hope this is still being made if I ever need another because I would buy it again. .

I did a head to head comparison of this unit with the lookalike but much less expensive Chefman. Both units have the controls on top, yielding a minimal footprint for the interior size. I much preferred the light in the Chefman and the flat wire shelf. The Chefman has three positions for the shelf, and the Cuisinart has two positions and a two position shelf. In the Cuisinart's upper shelf position, the food is mostly in shadows. Oddly, the Chefman accessories are dishwasher safe, but the Cuisinart's must be hand washed. Since the Chefman unit was also $60 cheaper, I wanted to like it.

Unfortunately, the top and side exterior of the Chefman got much hotter (130 - 160 deg. vs. 80-90 deg.), and the control knobs became uncomfortably hot while in operation. The deal breaker was that a combination of large size and limited power affected toasting. By the time the toast was browned (7'30"), it was also baked hard inside. The two timers were similarly accurate, and each has similar features.

Since I don't want to have a pop up toaster in addition to this unit, I chose to go with the more powerful Cuisinart, which toasted faster (4'20") and yielded a crisp outside and a chewy interior. When I cooked frozen pizzas, they were done in less time than my full size oven requires to preheat. The extra power also makes a crust crunchy on the outside and chewy on the inside. If your application does not rely on toasting, or if you prefer your toast crunchy throughout, the Chefman is a good option.

Other than toasting, I'm finding the convection bake function is much hotter than you might expect. My chicken thighs came out a bit darker than I prefer, but they were crispy and delicious. When I tried to make sweet potato fries following the included cookbook, they turned dark brown before getting crispy. I think that may be correctable by using a lower temperature when air frying.

In summary, this is a powerful, nicely made unit. You should definitely allow some clearance behind, but the top and sides stay cooler than I expected. The extra power demands respect and caution when you try a recipe for the first time, especially if you use the convection bake. I haven't tried anything critical on normal bake setting, so I can't comment on the temperature control.

I love love love my convection oven. I am still getting used to it but I use it everyday from making toast to air fry crispy chicken wings.
You do have to be careful with the dials if the time has not run out before your finished just leave the oven door open and the timer will continue to count down. Like the reviews online dont turn the timer dials back by hand because you could snap the dial off. That is a small price to pay for such a great appliance. I read the reviews before I decided on this appliance and it is everything and more happy with my purchase.

The oven appears to be actually hotter than it's indicated temperature; however, in toast mode it makes excellent toast. Easy to use but I think not quite as user-friendly as previously utilized Breville appliance.
