I have 2 shedding dogs, a Sheltie and a Shiba Inu. There was constant dog hair in our house. No matter how much we vacuumed, the next day our floors looked dirty again. We decided to use Christmas money on this vacuum, as it seems to have the best cleaning/features at a much lower price point than the more known brands. I've owned this for over a month now and it cleans about 1700 sqft of space. The areas are larger, but rooms are very disjointed the way they are connected. I've never had an issue with the vacuum finding its way back to home base. It has to go back to the charge once to juice up though. From what I've read, you can get the larger battery from the D5 and put it in the D3. I haven't tested this yet, but when it comes time to replace the battery, I will probably invest in that.
The only down side has been getting it to not drop out every few days. Definitely set your wireless router to reserve a DHCP address for the Neato and this will help. It showed up as a Texas Instruments MAC address for me with no name, so it may take a bit to find it if you have lots of wireless devices. It still wouldn't work with my Linksys router and would drop out every 2-3 days, causing me to have to reboot the vacuum. I switch out my primary router with my Netgear, which was used as a secondary wireless access point only. Since then, it's been up for 2 weeks and I haven't needed to reboot. Being an IT person, it appears to me they haven't coded it well enough to phone home and deal with changes (IP address or your internet address). It would always still show up as connected to my AP, but the app would say the robot was offline. This is why I took a star off. Hopefully they will push an update at some point to address this, as it seems to be the only big complaint from most people. Considering it's only a bit more expensive than a base Roomba and can do multiple rooms, I still think it's the best vacuum at this price point.
For filters, I'd recommend you just go ahead and order the performance filters. They still don't clean easily, but get an air can and spray it out about every 2 or 3 times you empty out the dust bin.

Update after 1 year:
After a month since the last update, I can finally fully recommend this product. The wifi issue appears to be fixed finally and the vacuum is still performing great at cleaning. It's only ever gotten stuck a few times in a year, and mostly that was due to me forgetting to pickup before running. I've found too as someone else recommended, if you take single ply toilet paper sheets and cover the filter, they no longer require cleaning and help with emptying the bin. This doesn't appear to affect performance of the unit in any way. This product has definitely been a time saver in our household!
Pros: their software is excellent, the vacuum works fairly well, we have 2 dogs that shed a bit and it would pick up a bin of hair everyday.
Cons: I have owned this vacuum for 10 months and have had to contact the manufacturer twice. First the base stopped charging after a few months and they had to send me a new base. A week ago the bin would not clip down. This has happened several times before, but typically i would find that a small pebble fell in and shaking the machine upside would get it out. Since I was unable to get it out I took off the cover to get to it and discovered that the clip which holds the bin in place was broken and they are not honoring the warranty because I took the cover off. The vacuum also gets stuck around tight spaces like chair or table legs forcing me to block it off on the app. It also seems to get lost at least 1 out of 5 runs and either gets stuck or cannot return to its base. It also will sometimes do one square (like a 10'x10' area) then return to its base chiming as if it cleaned the whole house. battery life is ok, it usually will have to take a break to charge. We have it cleaning the living room, entry way, laundry room, and kitchen totaling about 600 sq feet and it does around 400 before having to charge to continue.
To summarize, their software to control the vacuum is great, no need for strips or other components. The hardware behind the software is cheap and poorly designed. I expected to get at least 5 years out of this vacuum, instead I am stuck with a vacuum that breaks twice in less than a year.
I will not be purchasing another Neato product.

I will not be purchasing another Neato product.
After just four days using the Neato, I am thoroughly impressed! LOVE IT. Competitive price on Amazon.
Pro's:
+Great suction on both tile and carpet (we don't have real wood floors). (Dog hair, dirt, dust, human hair, etc..)
+Vacuums and navigates well on a thick carpet that kicks my upright Shark's butt. (This surprised me! My upright Shark flat out refuses to vacuum that carpet. The Neato is like - no problem - got this - next!)
+The navigation is very impressive. In comparison, my Braava bumps into walls and furniture like it's playing roller derby. The Neato vac senses and avoids hitting the obstacles, but still manages to cozy up to corners and nooks and legs of chairs without physically assaulting them.
+Good motion pattern covers the space well. My Braava sometimes misses spots when covering a large open floor plan.
+Uneven surfaces are not a problem. I put it in the basement to clean an area where we had to dig a trench through the center of the concrete. The Neato moved from thick carpet to area rug (covering the concrete slab) and back up to thick carpet like it had four wheel drive. (Another surprise!)
+Battery indication light and info light are helpful to know the status of the machine if it has an error. Very helpful to a new user.
+Competitively priced. More affordable for me than iRobot models.
+Flat front hugs walls and corners well.
+I'm grateful that it does a job that I hate doing - vacuuming! (And unlike a certain millennial person that occasionally resides in our home, it cleans under and around the furniture without emitting one audible sigh).
Cons:
-The body of this model is made of plastic which makes it relatively light but feels a bit fragile. When cleaning the dust/dirt bin, it doesn't snap securely back in place sometimes and I'm afraid to force it closed - so I fiddle with it a bit. The little info light tells me if it's not secure (hey - my fly is open!).
-Cleaning the dirt bin is messy. (Must pull it out, open it up and shake out the contents - which can create a little dust storm. Not that you'll end up looking like a coal miner, but it can get you a little dirty if you're not careful how you empty it and where you're depositing the debris.)
-Didn't return to docking station - yet. Okay, so this is coming from someone who only reads the directions if I have to - so I guess I'll break down and read the instructions to see why it has not found its way back to the docking/charging station by itself. (I have it docked on an open wall with little to no obstruction). {I have not linked the Neato with the app on my phone so I can't comment on that feature.}
All said - love the Neato! Vacuums tile and carpeted surfaces. seems to have good battery life, navigates a furnished room without any bumping and grinding, and traverses uneven floors like a little jeep.
Even though I mentioned some weaknesses with the iRobot Braava Jet 240 in comparison to the Neato vac, I still love the little guy for it's maneuverability in tight spaces like bathrooms, and it does a pretty good job damp mopping. I'm grateful for the help with another yucky job - mopping floors!

I have scheduled the Botvac to clean my kitchen and living room floors every day when I am at work. The total cleaning area it actually cleans in the two rooms is about 15 square metres which takes on average 17 minutes to complete (it has to navigate around lots of furniture). I think it probably uses about 15-20% of the battery charge for this area and the Botvac is set to Turbo mode so uses more battery charge compared to the optional Eco mode. It's worth noting that even in Turbo mode, it's not as loud as the average upright vacume cleaner. Given the large amount of mess my parrots make, and considering the daily schedule, I have to empty it around once per week and whilst doing this I clean the brush as well as wiping the sensors to keep them clean also. Cleaning the Botvac is easy and only takes a minute or two.
The android app is satisfactory, the initial settup was easy and once setup, there's little need to use the app. I can also control the Botvac using Alexa and I have also intregrated it with Samsung Smartthings but generally the automatic daily schedule is all I use. I get notifications on my phone when the Botvac starts, finishes and it shows me a map of the area it's cleaned when finished.
It can naviage in and out of some tight spaces and has no problem with the thick rug in my living room. I have it's docking station located under one of my kitchen units which it has no trouble returning to and remains out of sight until it starts cleaning. It has been very reliable and on the odd occassion it failed to complete it's cleaning cycle, it has always been due to me leaving things on the floor such as shoes (it doesn't like shoe laces!). I did have a standard kitchen chair with four legs which I kept hold of after getting rid of a dining table and the other chairs, it would struggle to get out from underneath the chair but did eventually get out. I don't have it anymore so not a problem. It's worth considering objects like this as it could slow it down or is more likely to get stuck. Whilst I don't, you could always take advantage of the no go zones you can setup within the app if it struggles with objects you cannot relocate (I have never used the feature within the app).
Note, when purchasing, I also bought a pack of 5 filters (the better quality ones that are in the D7) and given these are bigger in size, they slightly reduce the size of the bin capacity but they are much better quality than the filter that comes with the D3.
I would also like to add that I did a bit of research before my purchase and I think robot vacume cleaners with a laser like the Botvac range are much more efficient than ones without as they just travel in random directions, therefore in my opinion is well worth the extra cost. The D3 uses it's laser to map out the room and adjusts if new objects are added or removed from the room. It goes around the edges of the room/furniture and then travels in straight lines until it has covered the entire floor area. Based on the research I did, a vacume without a laser will take longer, and will likely miss some areas in comparison. The only negative thing I could say about the D3 is that it does not clean right up to the edges of the skirting boards/furniture, it misses maybe about an inch at most; it's not really a problem for me at all and considering the higher spec Botvac's that also have side brush are quite a bit more expensive, I can live with that.
The D3 has been very reliable and it does the job very well. My kitchen floor probably gets messed up more than an average room given the large parrots I have and it's great to come home from work and the floor is nice and clean every day. It was well worth the price and it saves me having to manually vacume the floor around my parrot cage daily. I highly recommended Neato Botvac's!
