Very Impressive Tablet!

Very Impressive Tablet!
First things first — I got this tablet because I wanted to get rid of the annoying long wire going from my laptop to my tablet, which was only a few inches away. I also used to have a cheap “osu” tablet which I used to play with, but now that I’m getting more into drawing I wanted something a bit more fit.The delay between the screen and the tablet is non-existent. It feels great to draw with this (especially with the nice glove that prevents your hand from dragging on the tablet) and I can still play osu quite well. The pen feels slightly cheap and “plasticky”, but it looks infinitely more gorgeous than my previous one. I really appreciate the pen holder as well, considering the tablet is entirely flat. Though it still wouldn’t be an issue without, as the pen is actually triangulated to prevent rolling (photo attached).I love the function buttons on the side of my tablet, although with the + and - button I can only zoom out. Must be something with my specific drawing software so I’ll give it a pass. It still registers a touch so I know it’s not the tablet. The only thing I really wish this tablet had was an accurate battery indicator, or even just an estimated battery life. I currently have no clue how long this thing lives for, but I assume quite a bit considering it’s just an input device. I will report later on it’s battery life.Overall, I’m extremely happy with this tablet. And only for $60! What a steal! I’d expect to pay at least double that price for something like this.UPDATE: I’ve learned a couple things about this tablet upon using it for a few days. The useable area scratches VERY easy and already looks very worn despite having not drawn a terrible amount on it. Some previous drawings are even completely etched into the tablet and you can see what it was.Another fault is that it only works when “in view” of the USB dongle. Let’s say if you have the dongle on the left side of your laptop but use the tablet on your right, because the laptop is “blocking” its path the tablet sometimes will just straight up not work. Basically, there can be no obstructions between the tablet and the dongle. Luckily I have USB ports on both sides, but (at least wirelessly) this tablet is unusable on my desktop because it sits up on my desk, and the USB ports are only behind the case or on top.Overall, I’ll have to get a cover to make sure I don’t destroy this tablet within 3 months. Be wary if you’re a heavy-handed drawer.

I am very impressed with this tablet, especially at the current price point. I have an older Wacom tablet and needed a tablet for a location photography setup, using with Photoshop CC (2017.1 at this time). I've grown tired of Wacom not supporting tablets with drivers as they age, and the drivers in general can be buggy. I had previously purchased another brand at a similar price to this but it 1) did not work inside all Photoshop dialogs, and 2) did not have a "relative" mouse-like mode for the pen.

On install of the XP-Pen Star05 I downloaded the latest driver from their website for the Mac (using a setup with a Mac Mini and 2 external displays). After the company told me there was no relative mouse-mode, only absolute mapping to the screen, I was very pleased to find that the driver indeed did have a relative mode so that I can use the pen like a mouse. So I switch back and forth between relative and absolute mode. The only glitch with the relative mode option is that when dragging the cursor to the very top of the screen it appears at the bottom of the screen by a few pixels and so initiates the Mac dock.

In use, the pen is a little lighter than I'd like - I wish they weighted it a bit, and the pen isn't form fitting like the Wacom pen. But other than that it works very well and there are lots of options in the software to customize the toggle switch on the pen.

Wireless mode is a terrific plus, though it did not work well on my 27" iMac. I think the display must have caused some interference. But on the Mac Mini the wireless mode works vey well and I used the tablet for an entire day without the battery losing charge.

Pressure sensitivity is very good and I'm able to draw smooth feathered strokes. For masking it works extremely well with Photoshop's lasso and other selection tools. The pen needs to stay a little closer to the tablet, about 1/4", than the Wacom in order to track the cursor, and I've had to adjust to this.

All in all, this is a terrific product and I definitely recommend it for anyone not wanting to spend 4 or 5 times as much for a Wacom tablet (that will surely be a doorstop in 4 or 5 years).

I bought this tablet so that I could take notes in OneNote when I'm on conference calls, since my mechanical switch keyboard is pretty noisy in the background if I type notes. I also sometimes brainstorm by writing notes and am trying to cut down on paper usage. I have an MS Surface and Pen I was using for this, but it was a bit of a hassle because of the OneNote sync time between the Surface and my laptop.

Overall it has worked well so far for that purpose. It takes a bit of adjustment to get used to looking at the screen while writing on the tablet, but not too bad. The pen is responsive after I got the settings tuned (see below). Only thing I really miss is that erasing is not intuitive on the Xp-Pen, since there is no button on the top. I also haven't succeeded in figuring out how to configure OneNote to erase if I push the side button, so I just use the 'scratch out' option. It is *very* nice that the tablet can be turned on quickly, vs. when I had to wait for my Surface to boot. I also like the pen holder that comes with it - very nice to have it handy to grab at a moment's notice.

The set-up was a little more trial and error than I was expecting. Hopefully this will help someone else:

-Others commented on the Star05 driver not working, so I went to the website first and got the Star04 driver as others suggested. I had the opposite experience as they did - the Star04 driver installed, but detection of the pen was intermittent and glitchy so I uninstalled and tried the latest version of the Star05 driver.

-The Star05 driver much worked better for me. I downloaded the verified release and not the beta, both of which were available online.

-Settings -this is where I found that a few tweaks led to big changes. I have two widescreen monitors and my laptop screen, so depending on the pen settings and work area a tiny move of the pen results in a big movement given the amount of screen area I have. My penmanship with the default settings was on par with a four year old on a sugar high. You can set both absolute vs. relative mode for pen movement in PenTablet and set the work area as all or part of one monitor, which helped significantly.

-What worked best for me: absolute mode in the PenTablet settings with a portion of one of my monitors as the working area. Relative mode also worked well, but for some reason (not sure if it is the tablet or me) I had a bit better control with the absolute/portion of screen combo.

-Make sure Windows Ink is checked in PenTablet

UPDATE: After 2 month using XP-PEn Star 05 wireless drawing tablet:
I find the buttons on the pen are too shallow. I think they need to be a little more pronounced so they are easy to recognize. One's finger can become a bit numb after working a long time with the stylus, and the buttons are hard detect. I also find I oft need to press the lower button more than once in such a situation. But that is not a real complaint. I still recommend this product. It is worth the money, easily. Watch out Wacom!

Excellent, lightweight and most convenient.

CONs: I did find the software thinks that the the tablet is a different device when wireless or wired. If the other connection is listed first in the "Info" tab of the accompanying tablet application, the tablet is not recognized. I now charge mine from my batter backup device rather than the computer, so I don't have that problem now. It does not have tilt sensitivity, but I do not miss that feature.

PROs: I find the table stylus is recognized perfectly and immediately. It responds timely, and with accuracy. The pressure sensitivity can be changed in the settings, but I found it was set about right for my touch. I get thinner lines, and wispy curves upon command. with the Star 05 tablet. I could not achieve that with my Wacom Intuos 4 tablet.

I recommend this product.
