Now we have three kiddos so I ordered another set because they are to be compatible. Our set might have been from a lot too old, who knows? My husband and I love to prank each other. For April Fool’s he convinced me I had 'eyebrow lice' and long story short, I shaved my own eyebrows off.

Anyhow, I came up with the perfect plan to get him back. He says he thinks that anything paranormal is stupid, and yet I know he is flat out terrified of ghosts and refuses to even watch Goosebumps with the kids, never mind an actual horror film. And so I planned to convince him that the house was haunted and scare him using walkie talkies. Once I was done, I could give them to our kids to play with. Perfect!

The walkie talkies are great. Easy to use, my three year old is able to get what to do with them. There is no interference, they have great range and they don’t eat batteries. Well-built and highly recommended.

So I turned on one of the units and hid it under the bed. I told my hubby I was going to ‘run some errands’ for a few hours, but actually came back and hid in the back yard after just 30 minutes. I loaded up some scary sound footage on my phone, held down the button on the walkie talkie and hit play. I waited by the back door for him to run out in terror, and it wasn’t long until the door flew open and out flew… my best friend’s husband Brian? Naked as the day he was born. I had barely registered the shock, when his wife Maureen bounced out the house in a similar state of undress, leaving nothing to the imagination as I was able to confirm that no, Maureen is NOT a natural blonde. Last to exit was my husband, whose only attire (a single sock (worn on his foot)) made him the most dressed of the trio.

Before long, the three noticed me standing there, walkie talkie in hand, mouth agape. Heads down, they shuffled inside quietly and put their clothes on. Maureen and Brian left, as did my husband. I then burned the bedclothes in the backyard.

I don’t speak to Maureen and Brian anymore. My husband and I made up though, and we agreed no more pranks or extramarital affairs ever again.

Great compromise of kid-friendly use and real FRS radio functionality

As a radio enthusiast, I would have gladly bought my 6 y/o nephew a pair of "real" FRS radios for about the same cost, but I was concerned he might accidentally switch channels or have other trouble, and that wouldn't be much fun.

This radio is a good mix of features for a kid:
- small size, looks cool/real
- flashlight (not super functional, but fun) - doesn't stay on, just on while you hold the button
- can change channels, but not too many confusing options, and not complicated to change them
- has privacy code - pre-set, not configurable
- fun little "roger beep" when you stop transmitting
- compatible with full featured FRS radios - for mom and dad.

If you want to use them with a real FRS radio, the channels are numbered oddly:

Little Pretenders 1 = FRS 1, privacy code 4 (77hz)
Little Pretenders 2 = FRS 3, privacy code 4 (77hz)
Little Pretenders 3 = FRS 6, privacy code 4 (77hz)

It's nice that there's a privacy code set on these radios - so they won't pick up random chatter from other people on the same channel. BUT it's not truly private - other people can still hear you - so make sure to tell your kids:
- not to talk to strangers
- not to use their full name
- not to use their address, phone number, etc

Forget 2 miles - they should have a real world range of about 0.5 mile. Since a lot of FRS users will be on the default channel 1, using channel 3 on these radios may be a bit better.

I bought these in 2018. The kids down the street had a set also. They worked well and were great fun. We enjoy them so much that I thought I would get a spare set for visitors. They were unavailable for a while so when they came back, I ordered. The set that came was defective and now they are unavailable again. The original sets still work just fine so I hope that this is a temporary quality control issue. The fault might be in the spring that is supposed to hold the rightmost battery in place?
