I’ll try to update when I have a more bonsái looking tree but for now I’ll share my experience so far. The sowing of the seeds is pretty straight forward however I do think the royal seed needs more info. Within the first week I saw the Rocky Mountain pine sprout then the blue j seeds sprouted and 3 weeks passed and the other two nothing. I had done a lot of research through out this time and decided I’d try to help my other two seeds to sprout. I read that the royal seeds can be hard for sprouts to sprout because of its tough skin and need to be scored to help the sprout push it’s way out. So I took them all out found one was already sprouting and had an inch of root already grown but the seed skin was to heavy for it to push it up so I fixed that one and scored the rest and reburied them laying flat not to deep in soil and waited. One week later I had two new sprouts for a total of 3. The others were duds. I tried helping the Norway spruce but they are nowhere to be found in the soil I didn’t sow them deep I followed instructions did some more research on top of what the booklet info had but it seems like all the Norway spruce seeds were duds. Which sucks but 3/4 isn’t so bad. The blue and rocky so easily sprouted it was exciting to see. The royal just needed a little extra help but also exciting. It actually feels therapeutic to troubleshoot the trees and to check on them daily make sure they are fine gently fix them or move them when necessary. I bought a little sun light strip and they are currently located indoors on an empty shelf with the sun light strip above them on the lowest setting for 12 hrs a day I don’t water them to often because they aren’t in proper pots. Overall good deal I don’t think the kit is expensive for what you get.Moving on to the consOnly 3/4 seeds sproutedNorway spruce never germinated and they seem to have disappeared. The booklet has very little helpful info your better off going on google and YouTube. The coco soil stuff keeps growing some type of mold fuzz on top like white fuzz sometimes turning into bluish greenish fuzz if you leave it. I’m not overwatering them I let the soil start to dry before even watering them again and I don’t give them a lot of water when I do.The burlap style pot isn’t very good for this use. It isn’t leaking fluid but I can feel the outside of it is moist more so on the bottom. The burlap pots don’t offer good drainage which is very much needed for these trees. While pretty I would have much preferred some cheap plastic pots with drainage at the bottom. My guess is maybe that’s why the fuzz starts to grow. Maybe it has to do with the coco I’m not sure. I think they could probably change out the types of pots for cheap plastic drainage friendly ones.Overall tho not bad for the price I did get it with a coupon I think it was 12-15 in total. I will not however give it 4-5 stars because of the dud seeds and the fuzz that myself and others have experienced growing on the top of their soil and because of the non conducive pot as well as the booklet they count as an add on bonus that lacks info on bonsai practice and the seeds and even the basics on how and when to cut your tree sprout to start the bonsai process because if you just plant this and keep repotting this eventually you’ll have a normal sized tree thinking it’s somehow supposed to stay small and be a cool mini tree because you were sold bonsai tree seeds. Anyways I hope this info helps I’ll update pictures whenever I remember to on this review.

I’m very much enjoying this kit, super fun! Easy too.

Easy steps to follow and great for beginners. After almost 6 weeks, only 2 of the 4 trees sprouted. I believe the time frame for most of these trees were 3-6 weeks depending on the species. I’m a little disappointed neither of the two colorful trees sprouted. However, prior to planting them, there were instructions to submerge them in water and only plant the ones that sunk to the bottom. All of my stayed afloat unless poked down, with the exception of the Royal poinciana (that one was just bigger and sunk immediately after being placed into the water). I planted all the seeds according to the instructions whether they floated or sunk because most of mine stayed afloat. So I probably planted a few unviable seeds.
Regardless of 2 not sprouting, I am still having a great time with the pine and spruce trees that did.
It’s important to remember that you are buying a product to help you grow a bonsai tree from seeds. A fully grown bonsai takes decades to grow. However, Planters Choice gives you all the tools you need to be start off in the beginning stages. There are still many other variables that go into the process of growing these trees from the seed. And so many other steps to take once your tree starts to mature.

I purchased the Bonsai Starter Kit with high hopes of kickstarting my bonsai journey, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a complete letdown. I'll start with the positives – their customer service is commendable. When I complained about missing a species specified in the kit, they promptly sent me a pack with all the seeds. However, that's where the praise ends.

The kit includes seeds, pots, coco coir, and what can only be described as subpar scissors. These scissors are barely suitable for cutting sewing threads, let alone handling the demands of bonsai work. They quickly rusted, adding insult to injury.

One major flaw with this kit is the emphasis on growing from seeds. For a bonsai newbie like myself, the last thing I wanted was to start from scratch with seeds. Bonsai requires patience, but there's a limit. Most beginners want to work with a tree immediately, whether it's a pre-bonsai or a ready-made bonsai.

Moreover, the selection of species included in the kit is questionable. Species like Royal Poinciana and Blue Jacaranda are known to be problematic as bonsai specimens. For a spruce, it's much more practical to visit a local nursery or even Home Depot.

In essence, this kit is a total rip-off. It preys on the enthusiasm of bonsai beginners, offering inadequate tools and species that aren't ideal for those just starting out. Save yourself the frustration and look elsewhere for a bonsai kit that actually delivers on its promises.

I bought these as Christmas presents and they were an absolute hit! Such a neat gift!
Only thing I didn't realize before purchase is that only 1 soil disc is provided per kit. I would recommend buying more soil discs separately if you plan on planting more than one bonsai.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Throughout
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2019
I originally bought this product as a gift for a friend. I was so thrilled with the apparent quality of the Starter Kit that I decided to purchase a second one for myself. The kit contains everything you require to get started. The instruction booklet inside was most informative with clear instructions. The seeds provided were of a good quality (not a single one floated after a 24hr soak!). I have just finished sowing the seeds in the pots & compost provided and am now looking forward to seedlings appearing in the next few weeks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Problem with seeds (update)

Original post: The seeds for one of the tree did not grow at all.. even after I followed the instruction manual.

Update: They promptly fixed the issue and they were very nice to deal with.
