Detection & AlertsLeak Alert water detectors have two Sensing Contacts that carry a mild electrical current. When both contacts detect moisture, the detector will sound a loud 105 dB alarm and the LEDs will flash. Email notifications will also be sent to configured email addresses every ten minutes for the first hour, and then once every hour for the life of the battery. |
PlacementAn infinite number of Zircon Leak Alert WiFi detectors can be configured and strategically placed in your home or property. Leak Alert detectors are intended for interior use only and must be placed within range of your router to successfully send email notifications. Leak Alert water detectors must be placed with the two metal Sensing Contacts flush against the surface where it can come in contact with leaks. Place the Leak Alert water detectors anywhere the potential for flood or leaks may occur:

Battery Installation & Low BatteryThe Zircon Leak Alert WiFi water detector includes one 3V (CR123A) lithium battery. Remove the plastic PULL tab strip from the battery compartment before use. To access the battery compartment, grasp the base of the detector with one hand, placing your thumb and middle finger on the indented battery access grooves. Squeeze both sides of the bottom half of the case. Lift and detach the top cover. During the initial configuration of your Leak Alert WiFi, you may receive a 'Low Battery Alert' notification to your configured email address(es) as a result of a temporary dip in the battery voltage during the configuration process. This is not uncommon. The battery will quickly recover its voltage once the configuration process is complete and the detector enters sleep mode. In the event of an actual low battery, the Leak Alert WiFi will chirp every 30 seconds between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. local time, and one email notification will be sent per 24-hour period. |
Email NotificationsEmail notifications will be sent as long as the detector is within range of your Wi-Fi router. Upon successful configuration, email notifications will be sent to confirm configuration, when a leak is detected, and when the battery is low and/or has been replaced. Each email will contain the detector’s name and time stamp. To receive an optional event log summary every 6 days, check the option box 'Send Log Every 6 Days' in the 'Device' screen during configuration. The Event Log reports the last 20 notifications sent, including anytime there was a lost connection to the router, upon reconnection to the Internet. |
1. Wi-Fi Connection
The Leak Alert WiFi water detector serves as a wireless access point and will be labeled as 'LeakAlertWi-Fi_' and followed by a series of 8 digits ('LeakAlertWiFi_XXXXXX_XX'). Once your electronic device is connected to the Leak Alert Wi-Fi network, you can continue configuring your device. The detector and electronic device must be connected to complete the email notification set-up to link to the Wi-Fi network router to allow email notifications to be sent. Once connected to the Leak Alert "network," open a web browser and enter the detector's IP address: 192.168.4.1. Be sure to verify all numbers in the address were entered correctly.
2. Name of Device and Time
Email notifications will contain the detector’s name and local time.
Multiple detectors can be placed throughout the home or property. Because each detector works independently from each other, each detector will need to be individually configured, named, and programmed with the local time. (Pro Tip: Name detectors by their locations to quickly locate and address leaks when a notification is received.)
If you would like to receive an optional event log summary every 6 days, be sure to check the box next to “SEND LOG EVERY 6 DAYS”.
3. Contact Information
When a leak is detected, or the battery is low, the Leak Alert WiFi water detector will send notifications to up to 5 configured email addresses via your Wi-Fi network. Please carefully review the accuracy of all contact information submitted. (Pro Tip: Create a distribution list to exponentially increase number of email recipients.)
4. Confirmation Notification
Upon successful configuration, a confirmation email will be sent to each email address configured. Please check each email address to confirm receipt of the notification.
Remember to check your spam folder.
If a notification email is not received, check your Spam/Junk folder, then check your Wi-Fi connection and the range of your Wi-Fi router. If the detector is too far from the router and outside of the Wi-Fi’s range, the detector will be unable to connect to your network to send email notifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Question: What type of battery does the Leak Alert WiFi use?
Answer: The tool requires one (non-rechargeable) 3V (CR123A) lithium battery, included.
Q: Will the detector still work if there is a power outage to my Wi-Fi router?
A: The detector will be unable to send email alerts during this time. However, the visual and audio (105 dB alarm) alerts will still function.
Q: Why is my Leak Alert WiFi still emitting an alarm when the sensing contacts are dry?
A1: Moisture from your fingers can trigger the alarm if they come in contact with the external Sensing Contacts that wrap around the bottom of the detector.
A2: Alarm may actually be the chirp of the low battery indication. Replace with a new 3V (CR123A) lithium battery immediately.
Q: Will I ever need to reconnect the detector to the Wi-Fi network after the first configuration?
A: If the wireless password is updated, a new configuration is entered, or the router is factory reset, the Leak Alert WiFi must be reconfigured to the router.

Product Description
The Zircon Leak Alert WiFi smart water detector is a wifi water sensor and alarm that protects your property. This compact wifi leak detector allows for easy placement anywhere in any place that has potential for flooding or leaks such as near water heaters, sinks, dishwashers, sump pumps, and more. The Leak Alert WiFi is battery operated, wireless and fully automatic so no wiring or hub is required and all the limitations of hub-based wired products on the market are avoided. When moisture is detected, the wifi water detector will sound an 105 dB alarm, emit a visual warning by flashing a SOS, and will send an email alert via your Wi-Fi connection to up to five email addresses to warn you of the water leak. This could potentially save thousands of dollars in water damages. The Zircon Leak Alert WiFi eliminates the need for all the expensive accessory equipment by operating independently on a hub-less platform. Each unit operates independently of each other and can be individually named, allowing for an infinite number of units to be on guard protecting your space from water damage. Name each wifi water alarm during the set-up process (it is best to name each unit uniquely based on the location the device is utilized) and the emergency email will alert you of the exact location of the problem allowing for even faster intervention. Should a flood occur, the Leak Alert WiFi unit will float and continue to send out visual flashing alerts, an auditory alarm, and email notifications so it can be both seen and heard from a distance. Zircon designed this wifi water leak detector to chirp and send email notifications when the battery is running low and needs to be replaced. Each Leak Alert WiFi unit includes an easily installed standard 3V Lithium battery to keep your smart water leak sensor running at optimal performance. Just like your smoke detector, remember to check and replace your Leak Alert WiFi batteries every year. The Leak Alert WiFi is the perfect water detector for HOA, multi-unit, and multi-story property managements. It is also a great smarthome device to meet the needs of your property and protect your apartment, home or office. The Zircon Leak Alert WiFi allows you to save money and protect your entire property with one purchase.

Update March 21, 2019: Both of my units still 100% functional with no glitches or indication of low battery, this is goodness of the best kind.
Update March 16, 2019: Putting this up front because it is important. Adjustment for Daylight Saving Time should be built in to the firmware. I suppose getting the alert should be enough but knowing exactly when it happened can be important also.
Setup was easy and it does work. That is the good, once setup I can no longer see it in my browser or use it as an access point. This may be caused by the fact that it is connected to WI-FI via an access point. Also the first two times I tested it I git a low battery alert in my email, after that I didn't.
Update: October 22, 2018: These thing are great. I still get a low battery alert but only when I test the device. Have not received one any other time.
One observation: If the owner is not nearby when the alarm goes off they better have an alternative person to see if there really is a leak. I don't know which is worse: having a leak when you can fix it or being alerted to a leak when there is nothing you can do but worry,,,
Update January 23, 2018: While I still can't speak for the reliability of the leak detector I can say that the Zircon company provides tremendous customer service. I had reason to contact them yesterday for a problem, that turned out to be of my own making, and Frank was kind, patient and very understanding. He knew the product well and lead me to the final solution which was a conflict in my router setup. Thanks again, Frank.
Update January 27, 2019: I hope my experience helps someone, this is a decent product:
I just tested both units again and the one by my water heater worked OK. It is about 12 feet from the router on the same level. The unit in the laundry room failed so I replaced battery (again) and reconfigured it (again). and now it seems to be working. This unit is also about 12 feet from the router but on a different level, one floor below. I don't know what the design range is for these units but I feel they should have been designed with a little more WIFI strength built in.
Both of my routers are Linksys and relatively new (AC2200/AC1750). There is only one wooden wall or floor between them and the leak detectors but they are definitely not uninterrupted line of sight.
Update January 28, 2018: Knock on wood - Both units have worked well for two days now. It may be that I have gotten the correct positioning for them to work reliability.
Update March 4, 2019: I have developed a system for using IFTTT to turn on something (in my case a Red Lamp) when the Leak Detector sends me an email alerting me to a leak. It goes like this.
I use Outlook (Hotmail) but it should work for any email service)
You can also create a rule on your account that if the email came from a specific sender, it will automatically be forwarded to your other account. Here's how to do it:
1. Sign in to your email account and then go to your Inbox page.
2. Click on the gear (settings) icon located at the top part of your screen next to your username and then select More mail settings.
3. Under Customizing email, click on Rules for sorting new messages.
4. Click on New. Under Step 1: Which messages do you want this rule to apply to?, on the first box with dropdown list, select Sender's address then on the second box, select is. Lastly, type in the email address.
5. Under Step 2: What action do you want to apply?, select Forward to and type in the email address where do you want the emails to be forwarded.
6. Click on Save.
The email from the leak detector would be forwarded to trigger@applet.ifttt.com
In IFTTT setup an applet that will trigger on any email from you as the IF action and an action of your choice for the THEN action, in my case it was to use Smart Life to turn on a WIFI outlet with a red light bulb. This is all tested and works very fast. I went downstairs to trigger a leak email and by the time I got upstairs the red light was on
I hope this gives other users an idea of how powerful all this stuff is and useful
Update March 11, 2019: Just added neat new IFTTT Applet that will call my cellphone if my warning lamps are turned on. This was the feature I really wanted and is easy to implement assuming you have completed the steps I have outlined earlier in this review
INITIAL REVIEW: Just an initial review, will check back in a year and update. Easy to configure and place. Had the same issue many people have where the battery received with the unit was mostly discharged. I'd ordered a pack of 123 batteries when I bought the sensors, so I immediately replaced the battery. Be aware that you do not have to re-configure the unit after replacing a battery, it retains the setup info, and sends you a "battery changed" message afterwards. Nice. We'll see how it works in practice.
The only minor issue I had was that the last one I set up has a low battery out of the box. Not worthy of a deduction in rating, although it is bothersome.
I bought it in November and now in Feb it's dead already. I stopped receiving the emails awhile ago and finally got a chance to check it and it's dead. Not what I would call reliable. :(
Wow, it actually works! It's such a shame they can't do this for reasonably priced smoke/fire detectors
Positives:
Really nice and easy setup.
The little wires on the side detect water pretty easily.
You can set it to send you an I'm alive reminder email every week.
Negatives:
Not sure how waterproof it is. If you get a lot of water it will go into the unit (it has a hole on the top for the siren) so it may become a paperweight.
The I'm alive email is nice. A low battery email would also be nice to have.
The email alerts are sent via an Amazon AWS server (to help them not be labeled as spam) but if that service goes offline, or they decide to shut it down after so many years, your unit will cease to send email alerts.
You have to trust this little Ios device that is on your local LAN and obviously phones home to Zircon every so often to check for software updates etc..
