BSN GYM CHALK
Get A Grip!
Athletes know how important it is to have fresh, dry hands when performing and working out. This is especially true for gymnasts, weight lifters, pitchers, field athletes, even rock climbers. That’s why they rely on BSN Gym Chalk to help keep their hands perspiration free.
The average human body has up to 3 million sweat glands, with the highest concentration in the palms of the hands. With that many sweat glands it’s no wonder the average person sweats about a quart of perspiration per day. Crank up the heat and the level of exertion and some people’s sweat level keeps on rising. Someone who aggressively works out perspires about a quart to almost half a gallon per hour. This is where BSN Gym Chalk comes into play.
BSN Gym Chalk is produced from magnesium carbonate, a white solid which occurs in nature as a mineral. Its inherent structure acts as a drying agent, as it absorbs sweat.
Sweat Free Zone
The sweat-free zone is especially helpful for gymnasts who depend on dry hands while training and performing on the rings, pommel horse, and bars. Some gymnasts chalk up their feet and even their legs to maintain friction for a better grip.
No Slip Grip
Power lifters and athletes in weight training use BSN Gym Chalk because it dries their palms and ensures a reliable, strong grip. This action prevents dangerous slipping of equipment from their hands. Power lifters use BSN Gym Chalk to get maximum grip when competing against other lifters.
Peak Performance
BSN Gym Chalk is useful to increase deadlifting strength, which is directly affected by the grip strength of the lifter. A lot of people are not naturally strong enough to hold the weight they can actually lift, which prevents them from achieving their peak performance. Gym chalk can be spread across the entire palm and fingers, even the bar itself, to develop and maintain a tighter and stronger grip technique.
Drying Agent
As muscles heat up, more sweat is produced, making BSN Gym Chalk a perfect purchase to dry up the perspiration. Other drying agents, such as baby powder, appear to be a perspiration absorber. However, they often reduce friction between the bar and hands, making it slippery instead of dry. As a natural consequence, grip weakens, causing a potentially dangerous result.
Great Value And Convenience
BSN Gym Chalk is competitively priced and conveniently packaged, making it a great addition to workout equipment. It is individually wrapped in eight (8) 2 ounce blocks. The individual packages alleviate messy loose chalk. The convenient wrapping also allows athletes to use it in specifically targeted areas. It’s efficient because it wastes less, making it last longer.
Product Description

You can't carry a block of this to the gym and chalk your hands directly with it. It will break and crumble. I crumble a block or two into a big Ziploc bag, into which I can dip both my hands, and chalk up that way, which works well, is fairly tidy, and lasts a long time based on my use.
Other commenters have complained that this chalk is insufficient for rock climbing. Perhaps you need something a bit more resin-y for that. I don't know. I can tell you, however, that it is perfect for barbell lifting. I don't need a heavy layer of it on my hands, just a thorough dusting, quickly working it in like hand lotion. It's a light powder when you crumble it, like talc, very dry, which is what you want it to be.
I use it when I deadlift heavy once a week (started using it at 275 when I was a novice deadlifter.) I also use it when I do heavy trap bar Farmer's Carries (430 lbs these days) once a week, and when I'm overhead pressing heavy and sweating a lot (usually only 3-4 months over summer, as the gym is cool enough the rest of the year that I get a solid heavy press grip without it.)
I don't use straps when I lift. I deadlift using a hook grip, so this chalk is my major lifting aid. Am very happy with it. It's easy to crumble and I like carrying it in the Ziploc bag, breaking it out when I need it. I've never had a grip problem while using it. Not once. In fact, I never give a second thought to my grip when I'm using it, which is a sure sign it works well.
First impression - there's a ton of this stuff. You receive 8 bricks and while each one weighs only 2 ounces it produces quite a bit once broken up. I used an old protein drink container to hold 4 after I smashed them and it was about half full.
On the walls - there was a certain quality to the Black Diamond chalk that this stuff seems to lack though once you get used to it it performs adequately. Additionally this stuff dries out the hands a bit more than the other chalk but when gripping a small crimp hold on an overhang or sloper it's usually good to have as little moisture as possible on your hands. I would say there is probably some sort of processing that black diamond does to their chalk that makes it feel the way it does but when all is said and done getting a pound of chalk for less than 15 bucks is a steal when it works as well as this stuff does.
For climbing there isn't a much better deal than this stuff. Most of the major manufacturers use the same ingredients as this stuff contains and want to charge you 3 times as much for the same amount. If you're not particular about your chalk you can't go wrong with this.
