Noise! Poor basket design.
3 Stars
Noise! Poor basket design.
I use a 90-gallon fresh water tank with live plants, sand bottom, and a fair amount of fish.I use a remote fob to turn off the pumps for feeding and maintenance. I'm running two AC110 and one AC70 power head sitting on top of an AC QuickFilter 575 double stacked to keep the power head up high so it can get proper air flow (if it's too low in the water it can't get enough air). It plugs up super fast, and plant matter gets into the cages and tries to get into the pump. It's a constant battle by itself. It stays primed except during water changed if the water level gets too low for the pump to pull up the water. After servicing it, I have to add water to it so it can self prime. The AC 110 has been an ongoing challenge. The sponge pushes its cage up too high, allowing unfiltered water back into the tank. Reason being is the wimpy/shallow male tab molded plastic in the housing is supposed to catch a slot in the side of the media basket, but it does a very poor job of doing so and while it's pushed up, it causes water to flow out the right back corner. The sponge was supposed to hold the media basket open tight to the sides, but it can't do it job very well. The sponge gets imprinted where there are keeper teeth in the basket and that allows the sponge to be weaker at pushing outward. I've added material to both ends of the sponge to make it wider, but it still lets the basket ho up on the right side only. The left side has a good tab set up and holds tight always. My remedy was to use a large, strong spring clamp, about a 4" clamp.I've added 2 stainless steel washers to both AC110 motors due to noise (acts like a bearing) and raising them up. It was getting the impeller jammed from sand getting caught when I used two down tubes they'd get more sand caught, so I only use one on each U tube. The large fish get it kicked up high in the water when they're playing.Sometimes I still have to empty all the water out and rinse the housing clear of sand and all of the debris that gets build up under the media basket that never get past the media and just collect under it.Also, you have to clean the snotty paste that builds up and closes down the impeller intake journal. I use a short round brush and follow up with Q-Tips.None of those are mentioned for filter maintenance.Noise! It's a BIG issue for some of us. The rattle they make or hum is amplified by adding the lid, which completes a box much like a speaker box. Keeping the lids off is a must for me (needs to be off for adding a clamp on the right side of media basket anyways), but it allows for a lot of evaporation.Bad for the tank. It's good for winter where you can use added humidity. The water clouds rather fast while the motors are off for a few minuts at feeding time and that's why I added the second AC110, to both help keep it clear and help clear the cloudiness after feeding which is once a day and I use foods that aren't supposed to cloud the water. After several years of usage, and owning two of these, one hums and doesn't rattle, but it did after 2 years or so, so I replaced the impeller shaft and lubed the shaft and the hole of the impeller and I've used plastic wrap to lock the impeller to the magnet shaft so it can't vibrate.I did inspect the old shaft and could see wear from the impeller rubbing on it.Being this is the cause of noise for any impeller that becomes loud or starts off new being loud, lubrication is needed. It should be used anyway to help on wear and tear.Even my AC70 power head became loud from wear, but buying a new unit was more cost-effective over buying the impeller and shaft. It was the loudest motor of the three in the tank this year. Everything was quiet! But after getting sand stuck under the newest AC110 impeller again and taking it all apart to do a full cleaning, it is rattling way too loud.I replaced the impeller (after modification, so it couldn't vibrate), and lubed it using a toothpick and food grade silicone. It was quiet for just one day. In the past, I've used antiseize compound, and that lasted longer.Today, it's rattling again, just not as bad, but bad enough to look for a better brand that may be built better. I'll add pics and video.I started out with a canister filter by cascade and I replaced it with a no name brand canister filter that cost over one hundred dollars from Amazon that opened up the lid on its own and made a small flood with water pouring into the basement after coming home to catch it in progress. This makes me more aware of the length of down tubes. The shorter, the better for catastrophes like this or for the leaking AC110.Canister filters are more of a hassle to clean than hang on back filters.I have been reading reviews here on this unit to see what others do with all of the shortcomings I've run into over the years. Thanks for the reviewers who talk about the faults with this unit. I appreciate your time!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great filter!
Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2024
Love this filter. Been using is for a couple years now with relatively no issue. Really quiet, never have had any issue with cleaning and it keeps my tank water clean.

Just a heads up though, if you use a completely sandy substrate then to have the intake tube well above it. I had to replace this filter due to it sucking up sand when I covered from gravel to sand as the sand destroyed the motor.
