Excellent Espresso
5 Stars
Excellent Espresso
I am glad I decided to keep this machine beyond the first day. Previously, I have been using a Faberware espresso machine that was decent for the price and produced excellent crema. That machine survived 5 years until it started to leak like crazy. (Later, I learned I was supposed to unscrew the boiler filter and clean it periodically, something they omitted from the instructions.) Anyway, I was disappointed with my DeLonghi since the first few cups had almost no crema and tasted bitter, even though I used the same coffee and grind as in my Faberware. I was ready to return it and keep my leaky Faberware. Fortunately, I came across the reviews on here that said to dump the built-in tamper and use a decent tamper to tamp the grounds, and I tell you, it is all in the tamping! After a couple of weeks experimenting, here are my thoughts:1) Get a decent tamper like the Rosewood 51 mm from Vanelli. I cannot stress enough how extremely well-built, functional, and beautiful those tampers are.2) The filter baskets of the DeLonghi machine are made of malleable metal and take a few days to stretch to size. You have to break it in, in other words. The first day I couldn't get the filter basket out of the filter holder and had to use a screwdriver. Now it is easier, though I have to pull hard. At the same time, it is this airtight fit that gives you good pressure and good extraction.3) Don't be afraid to tamp hard. Some websites recommend 30-40 lbs of pressure. You're not getting enough crema? Then you're not tamping hard enough. You see a soup of grounds left over? You're not tamping hard enough. I can bet the reviewers leaving bad reviews for this baby were just using the built-in tamper.4) I have a $40 grinder from CuisineArt which can grind Espresso fine. Basically I have to grind exactly 40 secs. If I grind a few seconds more, then its' too fine and I end up with a soup of grounds after the extraction.5) I tried both Illy and LaVazza pods. (Incidentally, I had to purchase them separately, the reviewer who says they come with this probably got a special deal back in 2005.) The pods let you do easier cleanup, but so far I have gotten much better espresso and far more crema with grounds. So I say no pods. Update: To this day I cannot get decent crema with pods, neither can I with the old Faberware machine.6) I did try the steam feature and it makes good, very fine steam. The frother works great. Just follow the instructions. Make sure to unscrew it and rinse after each use.Update: see photo added of my first attempt at a Latte.7) The first few days it was rattling like crazy and making a lot of noise, another reason to return it, but now it seems to have settled down.8) Some reviewers recommended waiting 15 minutes on heat before brewing. I tried it but it did not make any visible difference from the two minute warm-up it takes following the instructions. In fact, waiting longer produced worse Espresso for me.So in a nutshell, if you're not satisfied with this (a) break it in for a few days, and (b) put a clear "Do not use" sign on the built-in tamper and get a decent one instead. I would also recommend against pods with this machine.Other than that it is well-constructed and solid, with tight-fitting parts, something I did not expect at this price range. It extracts as good an espresso as you can get from the coffee you put in it. It is also easy to use and heats up pretty quickly, which makes it dangerous as you could be tempted to brew more espressos in one day than your body can handle.PS, I have spent three weeks in Italy, just in case you won't believe my review unless I had that in there ;)
