Initially I wanted an electric guitar but everything under $400 inevitably had some negative reviews. I also borrowed an old electric from a friend and used it for a while. I learned some of the main chords but during this time I was reading reviews and looking for a guitar to call my own. It's a good thing I started learning on an electric, because it made me realize that what I actually needed was an acoustic guitar.
The advantages of an acoustic over an electric:
- much lighter
- no cables
- no amp
- much cheaper
- less things to fiddle around with
- more "natural" sound, whatever that means
The advantages of an electric over an acoustic:
- smaller footprint
- can produce a variety of different sounds
To me the disadvantages of an electric far outweighed the advantages. Acoustic guitar it was then. Searching the web I found my way quickly to the Jasmine S35 by Takamine. Reviews almost universally praised it. Furthermore, at $75 it was also incredibly inexpensive. I actually bought mine for $73 at the time.
I went to Guitar Center to try one out and possibly buy. They, of course, didn't have it. The nearest one in stock was in another store 600 miles away. So I ordered mine from Amazon. I was a bit afraid that it would be damaged during shipping but it arrived in perfect condition, despite Amazon's shoddy packaging.
I fell in love with the Jasmine the moment I opened the box. It's an amazing looking instrument and the matte finish only improves the look. I love the new guitar smell which is evident even a few weeks later. Be aware that the strings are loose when you unpack it so you will definitely need to tune it before playing, but that's a given in any case. The strings themselves may be the weak point but I'm not an expert so don't take my word for it. One or two of them seem to have a small amounnt of rust but they work well, nonetheless. In any case, I also bought some Ernie Ball strings as replacement for the future.
The neck feels perfect and because it has a satin (matte) finish, my hand doesn't sweat on it, instead gliding easily in any position. The action is higher than on the electric but what do you expect? You'll get used to it soon. The tuning keys are chrome-plated and feel very nice.
The only negative, but not enough to subtract a star, is the fact that the Jasmine only has 1 strap peg. You will either need a special acoustic guitar strap or do what I did and adapt a strap (see below).
Here are the other accessories I bought along with the guitar:
Tuner
Korg GA-40 Large Display Guitar and Bass Tuner
This tuner works really well and it also has input/output for an electric so it should be future-proof.
Picks
Planet Waves Assorted Pearl Celluloid Guitar Picks, 10 pack, Medium
It seems that everyone buys (and likes) these picks. They work well for me.
Stand
Musician's Gear Tubular Guitar Stand Black
Awesome stand. Cheap but very sturdy and it even has a security rubber band that prevents the guitar from falling over.
Strap
Protec Guitar Strap with Leather Ends and Pick Pocket, Black
Everyone's favorite. It's a very sturdy nylon strap but unfortunately it needs an adaptation to work with the Jasmine. This is simply a piece of sturdy string tied to one end of the strap, forming a loop that goes under the strings, right above the nut. You can also buy a special attachment that does this but my adaptation was free.
String winding/cutting tool
Planet Waves Pro Winder String Winder and Cutter
I haven't used this one yet but it feels sturdy.
The guitar market of 2024 has so many samples to pick from, and guitars with pickups are not always ideal. The thought process behind buying a guitar should start with something like "I want to create", and that doesn't mean an electric pickup. When the power is off, and the phone is off, the mind is better tuned in to finding that 'inner something'. Does this guitar help that out? Yes, without a doubt. If you can develop your chops, of course a higher end guitar will offer a smoother neck, solid footing with fretting, and a better tone or sustain. But for the money? OMG, what if Jasmine was around during the time of Woodstock? They would have sold out for months. Start out basic, and this guitar is probably the best value for starting out basic., Even with a few Taylor and Martin's in my collection now, there will always be a Jasmine. Seriously. Unless the production mix changes (please don't change!!!), this is by far a great ROI for the purchase.
The guitar tunes well and there isn’t any string buzz or problems keeping it in tune (which you would probably expect with a guitar under $100.
The finish is nice, with a satin finish spruce top and nato sides. The slightly reddish sides and back complement the guitar front. The fretboard does discolor a little up high where you tend to grip it, so keep the fretboard polished.
The body has nice sound and you won’t be disappointed with this as a starter or second guitar to bring to parties etc.

Now I am an obsessive researcher. I spend months reading and learning about products and activities before I spend a penny.
This coupled with my previous knowledge and failings to stick to it, I knew what I needed and what would truly impact my sticking to it now.
An instrument has to be appealing, visually and sonically so you will want to pick it up.
These Jasmins are gorgeous. The colors that come out of the wood imbue the instrument with a warm, cozy, and familiar feeling. Holding it makes you feel like sitting around a fire with friends.
Sonically the guitar is warm and rich with just the right amount of brightness. Even in my inexperienced hands its notes ring true. No buzzing here.
Right out of the box, I let it sit in my house for several hours to acclimatize to what will be it's normal temperature. Then I brought each string a bit closer to being in tune, let it sit for a few minutes to give the neck a chance to adjust to the tension. Then I actually put the guitar into tune.
The strings are of decent quality, unfortunately my g string has damage right over the sound hole so I wont be getting much life out of these strings.
That single bur on my g is the only complaint I have. The tuners while not being any marked brand, feel excellent and have zero slop. That being said I have needed to tune the guitar every time I've picked it up. I accredit that to new strings on a new neck tho, as every string is off by the same amount flat each time.
The action was set beautifully. Perfectly actually the same as I've paid luthiers previously to get right. In other words for the people who don't know. The string height is adjusted to a better distance above the neck making it easier to play.
The guitar comes with nothing but the allan key for truss rod adjustment. If you're new this affects the curvature of the neck and as I just said the action is already perfect so you don't need this tool.
However you should get a tuner, capo, case, some pics and either a stand or a hanger.
If you are learning on your own at home there is a ton of resources to aid you. Personally I have found justinguitar, fender play and yourguitsrsage to be the best available.
The finger pain will pass, don't keep at it ro long at any one time until you've developed callouses. If you do you're only going to dislike the process.
Rock on.
A prompt delivery and was very well packaged .
The guitar is very well constructed. Inside bracing is glued without any gobs of glue showing. I looked with a flashlight (torch). The external black binding is very nicely fitted and the wood, once the dust is wiped off, can be felt to be thinly satin finished and all joins are tight with no spaces or ill fitted areas. There is just a visible neat glue line under the strings on the rosewood bridge which is probably good procedure. A glue line can also be seen between the neck and the top of the body but this is very neat and again evidence of good construction.
What surprised me further is the body top wood. It is a streaky reddish beige color. The sides are like the picture at Amazon. I had expected to see a spruce colored light wood with brownish lines like in the Amazon picture and the picture at Jasmine.com and like my Epiphone Spruce top, I find it hard to believe it is Spruce. EDIT After research I conclude that it is a heartwood cut of Spruce; hence the redish non-striped appearance of the top and also the back: this is attractive and possibly more functional than the usual sapwood cut and will attract less water from humid air so, it's all good.
The Jasmine websites lists this guitar model having a "select spruce" ("select" usually means thin ply layers like my Epiphone) top with Agathis back and sides. The back and sides look like Agathis.
The guitar grows on me. I wanted a dreadnaught and I am impressed by the harmonics and notes projected by his instrument. It is easy to play and sounds magnificent. I paid 100 bucks + tax and got all the sound I was hoping for from a good sounding instrument but am puzzled because I don't know what wood is used other than Agathis and Spruce ply on the body. The neck is Nato with Rosewood fretboard and Rosewood bridge. I'm pretty sure I will keep it and enjoy big beautiful sounds.
Months later, I'm glad I kept it and the action, I forgot to mention earlier, was amazingly perfect right out of the box and remains so.
