There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
I bought these for typical homeowner/DIY use; I'm not a professional utilizing these tools for my livelihood. That being said, I do try and do as much research as I can when purchasing something so I can make an informed decision, as well as buy a product that will accomodate my needs and not fall apart. I'm always willing to pay a bit more money for a product that will be dependable and last a long while as oppose to something from Harbor Freight that is generally disposable and one-time use. My neighbor is an electrician and a majority of his tools are Klein, which I had initially looked at but decided that the cost was too high, especially since they too are now shipping production out of the USA. If I were in the trades perhaps I wouldn't have even considered these on first glance, but I am planning on asking my neighbor to check them out and give an opinion on them.
Something else I'd like to mention that I didn't see in any other reviews, is that Paladin Tools are owned by Greenlee Textron; yes the same Greenlee makes electrician and (I'm sure) other trade-specific tooling. That's not a negative thing, just something to keep in mind as I hadn't heard of Paladin before and was somewhat apprehensive (despite the reviews) in purchasing a brand that I didn't recognize. I do however know the Greenlee name and would have no problem purchasing a similar item under their own branding.
These tools feel great in the hand; nice and solid, the grips feel great as well. If you're familiar with the Irwin "ProTouch" Grips, these feel quite similar to those. Another thing I'd also like to mention about the grips is that there are small nubs on the pliers themselves that will hold the grips in place and prevent them from sliding off. That's a nice addition as when you're dealing with tools in the garage they tend to get a bit greasy over time and you'll find the grips will move around quite a bit. I do not foresee that being an issue with these strippers.
When the strippers are open, the lock lever has a catch on it to prevent them from opening too far and letting the spring fly off. While fully open, they fit nicely in my hand; I don't have to 'stretch' my fingers apart to get a grip on them. Nor do I have to keep a constant pressure so that they don't spring open further; this is also due to the catch on the lock lever.
I was a bit skeptical about the "22-degree angle" deal and being ergonomic, however after handling these, I can definitely see an improvement over the 'straight' strippers that I've handled before. I don't see myself using these for any extended periods of time, but there is a noticeable difference in comfort and it feels much more natural compared to others.
All that said, I'm hard pressed to find any negatives about these items. They're put together very nicely and exhibit some great attention to detail. I'd recommend these to any homeowner who has a use for them, and for the money you'd be hard pressed to find a cheaper option at this level of quality and versatility.
Now for the good stuff. I am not a careered electrician. In fact I am a mechanical engineer. However when I need to do electrical work, I just plain need it to work. I searched for a long time for a good set of strippers before settling on these. Any real technician will tell you there is no such thing as an "all in one" tool. I compared the Paladin to everyone- Klein, GreenLee, Irwin, Snap-On, Craftsman, even Panduit (very expensive). True this set is made in Taiwan, but the packaging on the GreenLee, Craftsman and Irwin say they are made in China. Some (not all) Kleins are now made in China. Snap-On is USA (watch out for Blue-Point brand though)and Panduit is Germany. Like the Klein, Craftsman, GreenLee, Irwin and Snap-On strippers, the Paladin are made of the same stamped steel. Only one set of Snap-On's are cast steel (this is a multi-tool however with no spring return) so they were not compared. I was never able to tell by Panduit's website how they built their's (too expensive anyways).
One other nifty build feature is the hinge pivot. It is a large steel rivet instead of a bolt and nut. The rivet will not come loose unlike the problematic nut and bolt type. One other note: as long as you ONLY cut copper or aluminum wire, the cutters will NEVER dull. As soon as you cut any other wire, they dull and never work the same. THIS IS TRUE WITH ALL WIRE STRIPPERS!
For less than $15.00 this could be the best strippers! See I tried to keep it short!
1. Ergonomics ..they feel and handle great even in tight spots. The 22° angle is a really useful addition.
2. Performance ..these things make perfect and clean cuts every time. And a clean cut and strip makes your job easier. I don't know how durable these are yet but they are definitely high-grade.
3. Price ..for a 2 part bundle the price is great! I plan on buying a second set as a backup because I'd be mad as hell if these got snatched on the job.
I did a lot of research on various strippers and these won for me. Hope this helps you decide.
I purchased this, specifically for use on smaller wires,16-22 gauge wire; for building control panels. I have not used it for heavy electrical construction. This is my second pair. And, I am very satisfied with this tool.
At present I'm using them on a model railroad layout. I can strip 24 gauge feeder wires and then 14 gauge bus wire with the same tool, and every strip job is clean with no cut strands. I just stripped some stranded 10 gauge for a garage heater. The strippers are sharp, it's easy to find the right notch, and they provide great leverage.
This is an awesome tool and I highly recommend it.
