Product Description
From the Manufacturer
The Gorilla Gripper is a unique construction tool that allows one person to lift and carry heavy sheet goods (such as plywood, drywall, particleboard, melamine, tempered glass and granite) from the top, with much less strain and greatly reduced risk of injury to the back, neck, shoulders, arms & hands! The gripper works by clamping onto the top of the material, creating a sturdy temporary handle for the person who is carrying them. It allows the user to lift and move them with a straight back, eliminating the requirement of bending over to get under the bottom, thus avoiding the torqued back and the aches and pains that are far too familiar to construction workers and do-it-yourselfers. It's made of aircraft-grade aluminum, very rugged and virtually indestructible. It is continuously self-adjusting from 3/8-inch to 1-1/8-inch. Rubber gripping pads mounted on both plates protect the surfaces of the materials from being damaged or marred. There's just nothing like the Gorilla Gripper...it works!

Even if you do manage to lift it up with one hand on opposite long edges, you can't see where you're going on one side. With the GG you can.
Just be careful when you buy it - there are 3 versions that have different ranges of thicknesses. Find the right one for you.
I got the middle size which goes up to a double pack of sheet rock. But it won't grip a 1/4" plywood sheet. But that's easily fixed by using a block of wood with the gripper.
Funny thing, though. The web site for the product doesn't mention the 3 different size ranges, but they do exist.
It is a very useful product for me and is well-built and easy to use.
I highly recommend it, even for occasional use, because when you need it, it's a godsend.
We run a custom cabinet shop and work with heavy sheet goods like 3/4" mdf. We load our sheet goods from the
truck right on to our panel saw but even so working with these sheet goods is tough on our aging wrists and usually
one guy will work with the panel saw.
The tool works as described, however you cannot unweight the sheet at all or it will slip right out. Example -
on the first sheet I tried -3/4" MDF I wanted to shift my grip slightly on the tool to get a better
hand grip. I snapped the weight of the board up slightly to do this and the split second
that the weight of the board was gone as it "bounced" it slipped out of the gripper and dropped. No toes crushed so
I tried again, this time I lifted up quickly on the board and bounced the weight again on purpose and it slipped
right out. So moral to the story is go slow and steady, if you need to change a grip or body position -set the
board down and then lift again. We watched the video on the gorilla gripper site and if you watch he never
unweights the board, and moves very smoothly and slowly and we know why. I'm not sure about
using it on ladders or scaffolding, but I would certainly give it a try with the above comment in mind.
But now we always use the gripper to handle our sheet goods. We have had
no problem with the slick MDF slipping out of the unit as noted on other reviews. Hope this helps your decision....
I've read some negative reviews complaining that it fails if used to carry sheetrock. It is not for sheetrock! It should be obvious, but carrying a full piece of sheetrock from a single friction grip at the top is a recipe for crushing and tearing it.
