So, I started to research my options. I wanted to be comfortable with idea that what I bought now, might be more than I need now, but would work with my future needs as well.
My local home brew store recently did a demonstration, and they were using a KAB4, and it really seemed to get the job done. I read a lot of posts on some of the home brew forums and this model frequently got some really good reviews. So, I decided I would order this model.
I placed my order on Jan 31, and it was on my door step on Feb 2. Which was good, because I really wanted to start another batch Saturday. Anyhow, it was boxed really well, in a thick cardboard double box. I opened it, and found assembly to be very easy.
So, yesterday morning, I got all my equipment out, cleaned and sanitized everything, hooked up the propane tank, and fired it up. I only needed to bring 1 1/2 gal water to a boil, and it accomplished this very quickly. After stirring in my extracts and hops, I soon enough had it back to a good rolling boil, and then, just barely caught it before a boil over. Here's where the regulator seemed counter intuitive. Usually, to stop, or slow the flow, you turn a knob clockwise. Not here, you turn it counter-clockwise to turn down the heat. But, I got it figured in time to stop the boil over. After a hot break, it was very easy to keep the rolling boil until done. Very satisfied with the control of the heat.
Another positive of this unit is that it came a braided hose, rather than rubber as the picture indicates. I think this is a big plus. Quality of the unit appears to be very good. It sits steady, all welds appear to be good, and anything connected with hardware looks great. One thing I would like to see is an ability to adjust the height of the burner. I'd like to get it closer to the brew kettle, which I think would increase the efficiency of the flames. But, I'm not going to mark that against the device, because for some uses (frying?) it might be better a bit farther away.
Over all, I'm very satisfied with this cooker. If you're looking for a good one for your home brewing, I don't think you can go wrong with this one.
This burner arrived DOUBLE BOXED with Nylon Straps on the outer box. When I say DOUBLE BOX these were thick heavy and no sign of any damage.
When I Opened the BOXES the burner itself was packed extremely well. There was no damage to the burner. The burner sat level and all the welds were very well done. This is a heavy burner. The burner casting itself was rough but the gas openings are what I expected from a casting. There were a couple malformed nipples but they ALL light and perform well.
Now as for the LOOSE FITTING that some complain about or the stripping out of the hose connection. The instructions are very very clear about how to assemble. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN is listed several times in the instructions. I assembled mine with some PTFE tape on the threads and both connections were easy and tight.
As for lighting problems described in some of the negative reviews, again, I followed the directions EXACTLY as listed in the instructions. As a person familiar with blow out safety devices, the procedure they take you through prevents the safety from kicking in which would make using this difficult. BUT, if you follow the instructions EXACTLY as they say, this thing lights and burns like nothing I have seen. We only had it on half way and you can not hold your arm any closer than 5 feet over the burner. This thing does burn A LOT of gas, but you also get a lot of heat out of that gas. I have 2 tanks for my gas grill and I got them both filled before using the burner just in case.
I did burn off the paint before using for cooking. I understand that people find this a negative but there is no reason to take stars off just because this paint burns off. When you see how this thing burns, No way there is paint that will survive the flames!!
This thing is well built and for the money I don't think I could find a better burner.
The directons are great if you read them. Yes there are tons of disclaimers but in todays society I can understand all the warnings. I am working on a You Tube Video of this thing in action but there are a couple there already if you want to see it in action.
Take your time, read the directions. FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS and you won't go wrong.
This bad boy pumps out up to 210k BTU's and does it silently and efficiently. Five features that make it blow away my previous burner:
1. Oxygen inlet valve - My first burner was using only propane, creating a big orange flame. With this valve I'm able to let the O2 do the burning to get twice the power for less than I was using before. It's so hot it burns blue to colorless
2. Enclosed flames - The flames are enclosed to where your heat loss is minimal. You're only losing radiation from the frame and air from minimal cracks between the pot and legs
3. Multiple burners - As opposed to a targeted single flame, this burner evenly spreads the flame over the surface of the kettle minimizing scorching and improving heat transfer
4. POWER - I like to get to a boil fast, and once I'm at 210 degrees before boiling my wort I have to crank this thing down to ~10% otherwise I've been able to boil over my 19 gallon kettle with only 7 gallons of wort! 10% keeps it at a nice rolling boil saving that sweet propane
5. Noise - There is none. I appreciated the sound of my last burner sounding like a jet engine, but I appreciate the silent and deadly sound of this burner MUCH more. No more yelling over each other during the boil!
This is one of my smartest purchases in my brewing equipment arsenal so far.
