Product Description

The Tanita BF-679W Multi-Frequency Body Fat / Body Water Monitor calculates body fat and body water levels using Bioelectric Impedance Analysis (BIA) technology. By sending a safe, low-level electrical signal through the body, Tanita’s exclusive FDA cleared BIA technology, measures weight, body fat, and body water %. BIA is quick and non-invasive, and is one of the most thorough and reliable ways to measure body composition, clinically comparable to DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry) and hydrostatic (underwater) weighing.

The BF-679W features a weight capacity of 300 pounds, it operates for greater than 2 years on four AA batteries (included).

Tanita's Body Water Range Chart

Total Body Water % Measurement

Total Body Water % is the total amount of fluid in the body expressed as a % of total body weight (applicable for ages 18-99). Body water levels naturally fluctuate through out the day. Bodies tend to be dehydrated after a long night sleep and there are difference in fluid distribution between parts of the day. Body water % should act as a guide and should not be used as an absolute. It is meant to be used to track long-term changes in the total body water % and maintain a consistent, healthy body water %.

The average TBW% ranges for a healthy person are: 45 to 60% for females and 50 to 65% for males

Note: Total body water % will tend to decrease as the percentage of body fat increases. A person with a high % of body fat may fall below the average body water %. As you lose body fat, the total body water % should gradually move toward the average range.

Tanita Body Fat Health Range Indicator

Body Fat % Measurement

Body Fat Percentage is the proportion of fat to the total body weight (applicable for ages 7-99). Following body fat % measurement, a black bar will flash along the bottom of the display, identifying where the measurement falls within the Healthy Range Indicator.

Works on carpet, woohoo! But with a (big) catch.

Works on carpet, woohoo! But with a (big) catch.
I loved my old Tanita body fat scale (TBF-621), but it finally gave up the ghost after 15+ years. I need to use it on carpet since my bathroom is too cramped for a scale. There are carpet feet on the old Tanita which elevate it enough to work great on low-pile carpet. I called Customer Support and was informed there are no carpet feet available for the new models, and moreover, the ones from my old scale (which are removable) won't fit. Based on this, I instead bought the EatSmart scale, since one article said it worked on carpet. Wrong. It wouldn't even turn on when stepped on -- it just sank into the carpet. I then bought a British scale (Salter) from amazon.co.uk which was advertised as having carpet feet. But it under-reported my weight by 40 lbs. Finally, after comparing the underside of my old model to pictures on Ebay of the BF-679w, I decided to take a chance on it. Sure enough -- despite Customer Support's claims -- the old carpet feet fit the new model perfectly. See attached images of the old scale (top and bottom), carpet foot, new scale (top and bottom), and the new scale with the carpet feet swapped in. As with the old Tanita scale, the measurements on carpet are just as accurate as on a hard surface. So happy to again have a working body-fat scale! The issue, of course, is that if you don't happen to have carpet feet from an old Tanita scale, I'm not sure how to get them for the new one. Perhaps a different Customer Service representative can be more helpful? Very annoying that Tanita will not provide them, given that they used to. Maybe they will reconsider if enough customers ask for them?

My parents had one of these exact scales growing up, and when my smart scale died, I read into them and gave it a try. It doesn't do all the extra special things, but it works. I have tried it out alongside three other different scales, and it appears fairly accurate. I wanted something basic that could also do BF%.

This is a great scale. It produces very consistent results; always giving me the same reading (or +-0.2 lbs) when measuring back to back. The reviewers who say it's inaccurate probably do not know how to use a scale properly. If your weight changes several pounds from one reading to another, you most likely either moved the scale or are standing differently on it. Also, no impedance analysis scale will give you an accurate reading of your body fat. It greatly depends on your hydration level, time of day of the measurement and your body composition. This means there are two things you need to realize to use the body fat function properly:

1. the number displayed is just a guideline, it may be off by up to 10% depending on your unique body composition; what you need to track is CHANGE over time
2. you need to measure under the same circumstances each time for data to be accurate, since this is difficult to do, your best bet is to take frequent measurements (each day or week) and look at the trend over time

Here's how I successfully use this scale: I measure my weight and body fat every morning after my morning toilet, wearing the same clothes, standing the same way on the scale and never moving it around. My weight varies by at most 2 lbs from day to day (usually much less) and body fat at most +-1%. I then record my stats in an iPhone app that can be used to show and plot the data over time. If you look at some weeks or months worth of data, you will definitely see a trend and the data becomes very credible in representing how much fat vs lean mass you've gained or lost.

Pro: Easy to set up multiple male/female users and different weight scales, i.e. Lb and Kg. Tested accuracy on this one and the one it was replacing. Difference of .2 Lbs could be attributed to coffee and pastry before stepping on the scale.
Con: Scale itself is a bit heavy. If placed in a stationary location, this is not a problem. Display needs overhead lighting (ceiling or hand-held flashlight) to see clearly. Large letters and numbers but no back lighting on the scale. NOT a deal breaker, just a minor annoyance. Aloha.

I'm happy with this purchase so far. After my old Tanita finally gave out (the LCD screen stopped working, ten+ years after owning it), I hoped to find a similar scale with reasonable BMI accuracy and a more precise weight measurement. (My previous scale measured in .5lb increments; I was aiming for .1 or .2lb increments)
I considered several scales, ultimately narrowing my search down to this and a newer scale by a company called Greater Goods. I chose this scale because even though it is not a new model and was ten dollars more than the Greater Goods scale, I was ultimately skeptical about buying from a relatively unproven brand whose products include scales and...um...coffee?? From past experience, I knew Tanita to be a quality scale from a manufacturer invested solely in the business of making scales, and I knew the life cycle to be much longer than many other manufacturers. It bodes well to me that this model is at least 12 years old and is still being manufactured and sold.
I don't need (or want) a scale that syncs with my other devices and I'm not an athlete, so aside from wanting a general sense of my BMI and accurate weight measurements to within +/- .1 or .2 lbs, my priorities were: that the materials be durable, that the scale be accurate and able to work on various surfaces (my floor is uneven and I have the unit placed on a mat), that it have some thickness to it and to NOT turn on automatically when stepping on it (I often use this for a boost in height in front of my mirror and I don't want to run out batteries unnecessarily), and that it not look horrible in my bathroom.
This scale fit my needs as closely as possible. It's accurate, consistent on different surfaces, seems sturdy, and is unobtrusive in my bathroom. However, I would have preferred the design of my previous Tanita scale, for two reasons. First, the surface of this scale is slightly convex, which means that when stepping on it, the scale feels like it will tip sideways or that I will roll my ankle. Second, the metal pads for the electric current are of an awkward shape and are placed a bit too far apart for my average-sized-female feet. Still, relative to my previous Tanita, I get the features I wanted and then some (water measurement and memory buttons for two users), so I'm glad that I made this choice and hope that this scale serves me at least as long and as well as my previous scale.

I've always used Tanita scales dating back to my high school wrestling days (which requires athletes to be exactly on weight; if you are off by 0.1 of a pound you forfeit) due to its accuracy and consistency. This scale meets my expectations. It may vary by a half of a pound, but overall this is about as good as you can get for the price. I would definitely recommend this scale for anyone looking to monitor or lose (or even gain) weight. However, if you are a competitive athlete which requires you to make weight for your sport or martial art, just be aware that this scale may be off by a half of a pound, give or take.

Beware this is not returnable, I missed that when buying it. The readings are inaccurate. I got this scale to track my fat loss. According to the scale, I have more fat now and that is after losing 17 lbs. I am 143 lbs, my BMI at the doctor's office is 26.5, this scale is 36.6. I started eating vegan 6 weeks ago, so I know my fat has not increased. And yes, my settings are correct. I never give reviews, but I am not happy. What a waste of money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, especially for its price

I've owned this scale for almost a year now and can say that so far, it's a great way to monitor your weight, as well as estimate your body fat percentage. As with all bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) based devices, the results are still calculated values and may not reflect true body fat percentage. The instructions manual gives some tips that will help give better, more accurate values.

The scale itself is pretty consistent. When measuring weight, body fat %, and body water % multiple times in a row, it gives the same set of results. The body fat % this scale gives is also very close in value to another scale that I've tried that was used in a university lab.

Arrived very fast! This scale is what I have been looking for having dealt with the one at the gym with my personal trainer and needing something that looks at body fat as well as weight. Once a person is trained to understand body fat they would appreciate this scale. I find it's very accurate, again, comparing it to one at the gym, they give me the same results. Would recommend.
