I've owned a couple of centrifugal juicers over the years, nothing special, and this is my first masticating juicer. So, I don't have a huge basis of comparison, but I can say the yield appears much better than what I've had in the past. The softer the input, the better the yield. Super cool to see how much juice you can actually get out of a 4" chunk of ginger :)
Juice quality:
Again, this is my first masticating juicer... but the marketing seems accurate. The juicer is rich, smooth, has a deeper color, and is not aerated. Most of the juice I've made I've drank within an hour, so its hard to reliably attest to the separation factor... but even that seems true, too. I've let a few glasses sit in the fridge for an hour or two and its only very minimal separation, now that highly distinct "watery" layer that I used to get. I did leave one very small container of juice (~2 shot-glasses sized) in the fridge over night with a lid and it didn't seem much different than the other shorter-lived glasses... in other words, minimal separation.
Footprint:
I bought a vertical slow-masticating juicer because I have a very small amount of available counter space in my NY apartment. Fortunately, the juicer *just* fits in its intended spot. Because of the slow speed and sturdy weight of the device, it doesn't bounce around and I'm not afraid of it falling off the counter. With the juice and waste contains in place, it's footprint on the bottom surface is ~11" by 12" (quick glance with a tape measure).
Mouth / feed chute:
The smaller, fixed opening is good enough to fit a small to medium carrot; anything larger than that needs to be cut. I don't mind the additional work - given the quality and volume of juice, I think it's well worth the trade-off. The second, "big mouth", opening definitely helps... but its not perfect. Yes, the product picture shows a full apple in there but that is pretty optimistic - the mechanism of the big mouth opening and the way it moves means you could get a small apple in there but probably not your typical "regular sized" grocery store apple... its more roma tomato sized. Even for the things that do fit, I find two quick knife cuts into quarters makes the whole process easier. As with the small chute, I think the extra cutting work and time is well worth the trade-off. Not complaining, just want to set expectations for you. Finally, for leafy greens... at first I tried stuffing them in the big mouth chute but the way that the "trap door" moves to let things fall into the main tube seems to get stuck on leaves. I find it much easier to just take small bunches of leaves (or rip off from a head of lettuce), crumble or twist in hand, and shove 'em down the small hole.
Noise:
The noise level is minimal. You can listen to the radio or talk to the folks around you. You get to hear a very satisfying crunch when you put harder things in there.
Strength / Jamming / Clogging:
The hardest things I've done are beets, ginger, and carrots. Those work well. Once in a while things jam and the unit instantly turns off. A second or two of the reverse button is all that's needed to clear it. Mostly seems to happen if I stuff to many carrots at once.
There was one time where it actually clogged while in use and the shredded pulp stopped coming out of the exit hole. I opened it up and it was definitely packed in there... there was some very dry, long fibrous threads that were the cause of the jam. I'm not sure, but I think they might have been from celery of all things... It hasn't happened since then but the lesson to share is make sure you watch the waste tube. If stuff stops coming out even as you're adding new veggies, you have a clog you need to clear.
Cleaning:
There are 2 bins, one for juice and one for the pulp. There are also 5 parts that go on top of the motor/base to make the tower. Except for the inner mesh cone/screen, everything *mostly* cleans with a quick rinse of water and single swipe of a sponge. I say mostly because the outer container (the one with the spout) has a hole for the pulp extrusion that is too small to get a finger into and too densely packed to simply hold water over it to flush it out. I have a small metal dental pick that works perfectly and anything approximating the size of a chopstick should work for you, as well. As for the metal mesh, its similar to the mesh I had on my centrifugal juicer... very fine holes that only take ~15 seconds to get the bulk of stuff off and maybe another 30sec to a minute to really clean. I don't bother to get it perfect but I do aim for ~98% of the way. If one were to not wash the mesh immediately, I could see it (like anything else) being a pain to clean.
Overall:
As long as it holds up over time, I'm very happy with the purchase. The greater yield, texture, color, etc., and ability to juice leafy greens, more than makes up for the additional cutting and cleaning time. If you're an occasional juicer, centrifugal might still be fine, but if you're a frequent juicer and/or want leafy greens, I think you'll find the improved quality and yield are worth it.
I'll start with the only 2 negatives we have (which were not negative enough to impact our 5-star review): (1) the price was quite steep at $400; if there was a review category for price, we would have given that category maybe 3 stars; and (2) its ability to juice green stringy veggies (such as celery, fresh parsley, or the greens from the beets) is limited. The workaround for this is after we juice one of these veggies, we immediately follow with juicing a solid fruit or veggie like beets or apple, and that usually pushes everything on through together.
With all of the other fruits and vegetables we've juiced, this juicer does an absolutely phenomenal job and our pulp is ALWAYS dry! Not being able to feed whole apples through the chute is never a negative for us because we're accustomed to cutting our fruit into halves and quarters anyway, so it was no big deal. We love the open-and-shut spout feature that allows the juice to mix in its housing while juicing until full, after which we can let it pour into the container. We also love the reverse feature that assists with making sure all of the fruits and veggies are juiced.
The assembly and disassembly are surprisingly very simple. We noticed there are several negative reviews concerning cleanup. We don't have any. The mesh container can take a bit longer to clean due to juicing fibrous veggies, but we just take our time until it's clean. There's never a huge rush for us, so if you're looking for a super quick fix and are very impatient with the process, this probably is not the juicer for you. With advance prep of fruits and veggies (cleaning and cutting), assembly -> juicing (usually about 32 oz) -> disassembly -> cleaning (and we usually do a pretty thorough cleaning), takes a total of about 20-25 minutes.
Overall, we are extremely pleased with our purchase!! I hope this helps!
