Product Description
The Microlife Digital Peak Flow Meter with FEV1 is the doctor's choice for managing diseases that restrict lung performance. This advanced meter for spirometry includes a digital diary and measures air flow velocity and volume (FEV1) to indicate early warning signs for impending asthmatic incidents or conditions. Using these measurements in conjunction with a doctor's consultation allows patients with asthma, COPD and other lung diseases to manage their condition.
What is PEF: PEF is Peak Expiratory Flow, or in other words measures how fast you can push air out of your lungs.
What is FEV: FEV is Forced Expiratory Volume, or in other words measures how much air a person can exhale during a forced breath.

The meter measures the flow rate at one hundredths of a liter per minute, and the results are automatically recorded. Consistent and accurate readings will improve your ability to accurately assess your condition. |
Memory: Automatically stores 240 readingsThe highest reading from each session is automatically stored, allowing you to test multiple times and record your best result. Reports show that patients who measure and record their readings are better able to monitor and manage their conditions. |

How to take a measurementStep 1: Standing up, hold the peak flow meter as shown with both hands. Step 2: Take a deep breath and blow into the mouthpiece as hard as you can for as long as possible. Step 3: As you exhale, bend forward as shown to push all the air from your lungs. Step 4: Measure your peak flow rate twice daily and close to the same time each day. Complete instructions in English/Spanish included. |
How does the risk indicator work?Whether you are using national standards, or your own customized numbers, the green, yellow and red bars on the display are a quick visual reference to show how your results compare. As your peak flow raises or lowers, the arrow on the display will show the measurement as within the normal (green), borderline (yellow) or in the danger (red) range. What do the colors mean?
|
How do I clean my monitor?Simply separate the mouthpiece and measuring tube from the meter, then clean the parts with soap & warm water. Air dry. Removable mouthpiece Designed for all ages, this monitor comes with 3 color coded mouthpieces. Use them to monitor yourself and your child, or rotate them between uses for cleaning. |

Comes with two AAA batteries too. Easy to install. Setting up time is easy too. Remove a cover to access the time editor, then set date/time elements, using a paperclip to press a button. Easy enough. Note that the month/day appear in Euro style, DD/MM (vs USA MM/DD). OR you can use software to set it! VERY COOL!
The product mentions software for PC... but the company has an app for the Mac too. It's called Microlife Asthma Analyzer+, free on the App store. Setup a profile using an email address... but it actually stores locally and doesn't use the email. When you connect, it will notice your date is not sync'd, and offer to sync it from your Mac. VERY COOL. After using the product, you can view the data, PEF and FEV1 in charts, or EXPORT to CSV (for data points) or PDF (printable color copy of the chart). Use a sync button (two arrows, top right) to pull data from the device.
To use, it's important to know that you BEGIN by pressing the big button, WAIT for the beep, then exhaling gently, THEN put your mouth on the device BEFORE doing a big inhale... THEN exhale as fast as you can. It helps to purse your lips a bit. The idea on the inhale AND exhale is that you're letting it get a good measure of volume. After one reading, wait between 2-30 seconds (max) and repeat... then do the same for a third time. The system will save the highest readings of the three.
The SOFTWARE will also use your first set of readings to determine your BASELINE. That way the green/yellow/red areas reflect how well your future readings match up to that baseline. This is useful if you can set up a baseline when you are breathing well, and then the yellow/red will just warn you if you're dipping too low below that baseline.
OR you can use their charts (or online charts or a number provided by your physician) to SET your BASELINE. You can set that up in the software, with the device connected, and it will update the device. That way your readings will show green/yellow/red based on that number. This is useful if you are already having breathing issues (asthma, COPD, heart-related respiratory or post-COVID issues), to know how bad your breathing is, and have a good idea when it's probably time to see a doctor (if it dips into the red). Again, VERY COOL.
So overall, I absolutely recommend this device! I'm so impressed that I'm looking into what else they offer. It's hard to find consumer medical products that are so well designed and operate well too. Microlife truly scored "11" out of 10 on this one.
I went with this one due to it being digital, where it would record my data automatically (useful for situations where I don't have a pen and paper handy or my phone being on charge) and figured it was more accurate than manual peak flow meter that I had.
Turns out the manual one was a lot more accurate than this device. It gave a reading of 634 then 210 right after. So I tried it again and got a reading of 520. Meanwhile, my manual read 340, 320 and 345. The reading of 600s and up is for someone that has great lung function, which I do not with severe asthma and struggling to get it under control. I tried it for a few days and while I was having an asthma attack, which it again said 600 when my manual peakflow was 145.
This is too inaccurate to be trusted and was returned

If you've used a PEF device before you will know how it works - the result is instant on the screen and shows firstly the PEF then after a few seconds the FEV1.
You can record the results on your computer by either downloading the software from the Microlife website (easiest way) or using the disk that comes with the device.
The setting up of the software is a bit fiddly, but once you play with it for 10 mins and get a hang of the dated interface it's fine.
It DOES need an update, it's 2020 and the software is initially compatible with Windows 8... I can, however, confirm that it works on Windows 10 if anything a little laggy.
You can add multiple users to the device and to the software so both you and your partner/family can use the device.
They could increase the sales by updating the software and creating compatibility with macOS too, the device itself is fine.
In summary, I'd recommend it - just be ready to have patience setting up the software.
